Advice on Apple/Android Tablet

Hi there,

I need a tablet for very small but very specific use (business purposes). Id like to get as cheap as possible. The only specifications I need are:

  • Good battery life
  • 3g enable
  • Connected to apple/android store

Thats about it. I was thinking maybe an iPad 1 but difficult to find a price from a reliable supplier online (no ebay bidding).

Any help appreciated! Thanks

Why not this Sony Xperia S Tablet S for $366 BIN on eBay?

    • 1.4GHz Tegra 3
    • 9.4" screen
    • 1GB RAM / 16GB NAND
    • Wi-Fi + 3G

The first gen iPad with 3G would probably cost the same (see this eBay item) but you get the refurbished product, and the Sony would be a better device.

  • Get an iPad mini for less than $400.

    1. Great battery life
    2. Doesn't have 3G, but you can get a Mobile Wi-Fi device for about $50 giving you the added bonus of sharing the data plan with other devices also.
    3. Apple Store. Goes without saying.

Other things to take into account are…
    1. Portability (Normal size iPad looks huge once you start using a Mini. May sound good but believe me, you'll prefer the iPad Mini.
    2. Weight. I picked up my wifes iPad 2 the other day and couldnt believe how heavy it felt. Again, due to the fact I've been using an iPad Mini for a while.

    • I forgot to mention - a Mobile Wi-Fi device also has a mini-SD slot so you can expand your storage access by another 64gb without having to go for a max storage tablet.

      Comparisons:

      iPad Mini - WiFi / 64gb / 3g&4g
      Total Cost = $729

Considering all the above, the cheapest (with 3g) you could get is $409 (iPad Mini 16gb + Pocket Wifi Modem)

And this is why Scotty's Xperia suggestion is better.

  • Storage space is not an issue at all. I literally need the device to download our business app, and then to use the app on it (no wifi). I was initially thinking an old Ipad model with a 10 buck a month 3g plan, but maybe the sony xperia is the way to go…

Definitely go the iPad Mini. $509 for a sensational 3G machine.

You would also be OK with a refurb iPad: http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad … the stock changes regularly but right now there's iPad 2's with 3G available for $459.

At the very least iPads will retain resale value, whereas your Sony etc will be worthless in 6 months.
