Perth - February 2014

Hi all

I'm graduating from Curtin at the end of this year for the first of two degrees that I'm studying with them. Thus, I am looking at organizing my travel (with girlfriend) there for February next year.

  • When is the best time to look at airfares that far ahead?
  • Where should I stay (I've never been to Perth before so want to spend a week doing touristy type things as well as being relatively close to my graduation venue)
  • What should I do? What is in Perth for an Aussie couple?

Thanks

Feb is a hot time of year, I would recommend doing a road trip Denmark - Margaret River - Perth route camping and beach for 5-7 days (usually a few degrees cooler in Margs). Fremantle is ok, worth a day, Rottonest Island cheaper on Tuesdays, Perth also hosts the Fringe Festival at that time of year which has heaps of nightly shows on so it's a little more reminiscent of Melbourne.

Airfares - where are you coming from ? East Coast - wait till you get the $150 range specials from Jet,QF or Virgin…adioso and iwantthatflight.com.au will be a good guide

  • Well, I live in Perth and love the place but for touristy stuff I think club-dero is right, a trip down south is always nice.
Curtin is in Bentley (just spitting distance from my house in fact) and there's not much nearby in the hotel department. However, its not very far out of the city so if you were to stay in Perth (or even Burswood) you'd be ok.
Suggested itinerary, maybe spend a couple hours riding around Kings Park, maybe a 1/2 day in Freo, good time of year for the beach, head down south for a few days - Margaret River is good for food and wine, forest and beaches. You could take a day trip up to the Pinnacles and do sand-boarding at Lancelin.
Dunno really, it depends on what you are into.
Good luck and feel free to ask questions.

  • I don't know where you are from, but prepare yourself for mega sticker shock when you come to perth. Accommodation in the city is really only discounted on weekends. During the week, it is pretty much rack rate, so $200 - $300 for crappy places. Prepare to pay $30 for a chicken parma prepared in a haphazard manner and served indifferently. Bargain pints are those under $10. Generally they are $13 or so.

In Bentley, there is a training restaurant called Bentley Pines. They will probably be open in Feb. Get a three course meal there for about $20. Most likely lunch and dinner.

    • I see you are from Melbourne. You will be doubly shocked at the prices and service here.

When I go to melbourne, the prices remind me of bali prices.

  • We found hotel accomodation in Perth ridiculous prices last month when we were there. Opted for a
short term stay unit in South Perth as we wanted to be close to the city and a south perth college.
The place was 150m from the river and Narrows Bridge. Just superb.
At $149 per night there were 3 of us so it worked out great. So suggest you look at short term stay. We cooked for ourselves which was way better than eating out and paying high prices.

    • Basic caravan parks are well over $100 a night. It is unreal.

OP. Travel down south during the week if possible and in town on the weekend.

  • As they say, Perth…. New York prices, Kalgoorlie lifestyle!!

( I should know, I lived there for 10 years, which is 9 years and 51 weeks too long)

If you like beautiful sandy beaches (and nothing else to do nearby) then Perth is the city for you.

PS: Margaret River (the town) is extremely overrated.
