Video editing / "gaming" laptop

My partner is looking to get a laptop which she can use for video editing as well as some gaming (sims, simcity, LoL) I don't know much about video editing but from what I know, she needs an i7 (3rd gen), decent amount of RAM (thinking 16gb) as well as considerable storage (2tb HDD). With regards to the gaming, a half descent discrete GFX card should do the job, don't know much about laptop equivalent GFX cards.

She will most likely get a 24-27" monitor at some point but just the laptop for the start.

So, I am looking for something along the lines of these specs which would suite the task. Price limit is roughly $1000 but less is obviously better.

Cheers,

she needs an i7 (3rd gen)

It may help, but certainly isn't required. i5 will help a lot, i7 is really not much better. Also 2nd/3rd generation are not all that much different, but most stuff is 3rd gen anyway.

decent amount of RAM (thinking 16gb)

    Yes this is good.

    considerable storage (2tb HDD)

Yes, but for a laptop doing this job the storage is usually external.

They all suck a bit. More obvious issues will come if you get a high resolution 27" monitor, but for the games listed it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I would try to get a 7670m as a minimum.

  • For video editing, hyperthreading does come into play, so getting a cpu that has it would be a nice start.

  • The dell one looks nice, big screen could be nice. Thoughts on Lenova y580

  • Looked at a few online and think I have narrowed it down to either the dell inspiron 17R SE or the HP ENVY M6-1117TX | $899 at MSY but spec lay-out is hard to understand
