Locked Telstra MF30 with Kogan/Aldi Sim Card?

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a Telstra reseller sim card in a locked Telstra MF30 mobile wifi device?

If I put an Optus card in there, it asks for an unlock code - and Telstra want to charge me $100 - even though the device is 3 years old and has had many recharges.

As Kogan and Aldi resell Telstra, I thought maybe they would work without unlocking. Anyone know?

  • yes it should work with a kogan/aldi sim

  • are you sure its $100? should be $27.50 from memory.

nope, wont work with kogan/aldi sim, boost is a MAYBE

    • That is what I was quoted by Crowd Support, or whatever Telstra call online chat.

I was really hoping the Aldi sim would work, I really don't want to use Telstra again.

  • Unsure about your different providers (try one & see?) but I had one of these and it was hit-and-miss with Telstra about them unlocking it, if you need to. The first one I had was perfect - just walked into a Telstra shop, asked them if they could unlock it and the guy behind the counter took the device, scanned the IMEI and read the code off his program on the Telstra computer. Done & free in literally 2 minutes.

2nd time around, after I had my device replaced under warranty, I wasn't so lucky. They wouldn't/couldn't figure out how to do the unlocking, even in the same store, and eventually (after several hours all up) told me it would be $100.

So, worth trying your luck around the place - multiple stores, multiple people. That's Telstra for you.

    • Could you please tell me which Telstra shop unlocked the device for free? I've been to four stores and the response is either "Call this number" - which I did and they're asking for $27.50 or "$100" without even checking.

If you cannot, then could you PM me the name of the shop? Thanks.

I recently went to Aldi and I have a Telstra locked iPhone 4. The sim card would not work so I rang Telstra and they unlocked the iPhone for me for free as I was out of contract. Shortly after connecting my phone to iTunes and downloading the carrier update (which I assume was the unlock update) everything started to work. I did not port my number. So from my experience it might have to be an unlocked phone but I can only comment on the iPhone 4 locked to Telsta.

  • I was looking for method to unlock Telstra Elite (ZTE MF60) and came across this thread…http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2045971&p=3
I think the software can unlock MF30 as well. However, I don't know how much you have to pay DC Unlock for doing it.
