HP Microserver Question

Hi All,

I've had my eye on one of those HP ProLiant Microservers. I'm wondering how powerful they are. I'd be looking at running.

Ubuntu Server with

  • ZoneMinder (CCTV Software)
  • FOG (Network Imaging)
  • (Something to transcode video and offer it to PS3/TV/etc. Anyone have any suggestions?)

If anybody has already bought one, any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Transcoding is the only one there that I think will be an issue. And for this it really depends on the media you are transcoding and the output quality.

CCTV can be very CPU intensive depending on what your doing (motion detection, HD, multiple cameras, USB Camera etc) If you do this don't expect to do anything else on it.

Transcoding is likely to run into problems for most content.

Things like network imaging might not work very well depending on what your doing and if its multicast etc

Remember that hard drive use causes CPU usage so its very easy to reach your limits if you try and multi task.

While this is true, for magnetic drives you generally hit the limits of the drive long before the CPU.

Yes but my point is if you have the hard drives working hard the loss of some CPU will probably be enough to make other intensive tasks difficult.

The microservers are not suited for this type of multitasking.

If you want to do a lot I would suggest a 4-8 core AMD CPU as they are cheap and power efficient.

        For example AMD FX-6100 Six-Core 3.3GHz 14MB Socket AM3+ 95W $120

  • I have upgrade my N40 RAM to 8GB, WHS 2011, running PLEX and Airplayer for streaming, utorrents and file sharing, etc it worked well… My PS3, Xbox360, Ipad, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV, Sony TV,Boxee all can access my medias without problems

But as soon as I added a TV card and tried to use it to record… it pretty much grounded to a halt…

    • I can verify this.

      • I tried to run PLEX and took me 30 minutes, and still loading the web page, is that normal? or cos I have too many video on my N40L?
        i m using win 7 with 4 Gb ECC.

I tried airplay too, and it is not fast enough for most large 720P video, I end up using an IMAC to get the files from the microserver.

  • Another option- grab an unused PC with reasonable computing power and use that as a server! Power usage may be higher though.

Or if your PC has enough RAM & is VT-X compatible, install Hyper-V Server/Vmware ESX server (both are free) and virtualise your operating systems!

  • does anyone know if this would work on the n40l?

  • have a look here, yes it's a long thread, but check the first page for google docs spreadsheet of installed os, hardware and memory (they can take 16gb ;)
