iPad 3G Vs USB Dongle for Tethering

Hi,

Need some quick advice. I bought a bunch of the $10 telstra ipad data packs and found out they dont work on my xperia x10 phone so now im planning to:

either buy the Telstra Elite Prepaid Mobile Wi-Fi stick for $40

or

buy a second hand 32 gig ipad 1 3g for $150

my reasoning is that once i use up all my starter packs, i can resell the ipad as the modem has no resell value

any thoughts? thanks

  • What size sim card comes in those Telstra iPad data packs? I'm guessing micro sim since it was designed for iPads?

In that case, I'd probably go for the wifi modem. Yes it costs $40 and you probably can't resell it, but having a dedicated device which is small/portable is great unless you don't need to walk around and will be sitting at home plugged into a charger all day. You'll be more likely to carry it around and use it on other devices. Might be worth checking that it'll take the sim you're looking to use though.

The iPad 1, given it's age, battery life may be less than what it once was and hence you'll be needing to charge it regularly (it won't charge from some computers), etc… but hey you get an iPad as well (which is good/bad depending on perspective). It'll also be bigger and heavier than the Elite Prepaid Mobile stick.

    • makes sense :)

Im planning to just use it at home for about a couple of hours a night to play WoW or Dota.

      • You can't use the iPad as a tethering device, if that's what you were planning to do.

Unless you root it, but that may impact the resale value, and probably involves a lot of messing around.

        • i thoguht u could via rooting which should be easy. And then itunes restore to get everything back to normal?

If i cant unroot then i guess i'll get the wifi dongle today :)

        • You can use it as a tethering device (well, at least my iPad 3 can?) but it depends on the network. AFAIK the Aussie telcos all allow it.

  • Buy a cheap decent android phone for $50 - 100, use default tethering program or download an aftermarket tethering program from the play store. +1

Just make sure the phone supports the right basebands (if you're using telstra make sure it has 3G 850MHz)

  • found out they dont work on my xperia x10 phone

because of the sim size or because of the phone? you can get cheap sim adapters to sort out sim size incompatibilities.

  • You can jailbreak it - ipad 1 is stuck on ios 5.1.1 (latest for ipad 1) - tetherme/mywi does cost some extra dough though.
So realistically you have a portable consumer device (that can browse the internet for +7 hrs) and a tethering device for ~$170 (mywi is $20).
Best to check the forums on how long tethering would last until the ipad drains out for a fairer comparison though.
