Help me find a good socket set circa $100

Recently I've had some of my tools stolen… namely my Stanly socket set a $99 job from Supercheap.
So now I've gotta fork out $ I can't really afford, but I need to fix my car and I can't afford a mechanic. I wish thieves would at least steal from rich people! So inconsiderate!!!

The Stanly set was ok, got a bit grindy at times and I snapped a wrench once (my fault I guess, I put a pipe over the wrench as a breaker bar) which was replaced at Supercheap, but it did the job.

So I'd love some recommendations on a set. I do most of my own work on my cars, from replacing water pumps to whole engine swaps. I'm by no means an expert I learn as I go thus my lack in tool experience.

Thanks

  • So you know how to fit engines but don't know what tools to buy??

What in particular is wrong with your car and how are you trying to fix it. This will determine what tools you need.

  • I explained in my post that I learn as I go. I job that may take a day or two for a mechanic takes me like 3-5 days I guess. I was using Stanly tools, they're the only set of sockets I've ever had…
I've replaced a motor in an 1993 RS suby, with a 97 WRX motor. I've taken out a couple of gearboxes. I've swapped motors in a 1986 Mitsubishi Colt. Recently I dropped a 4G63 N/A into my 1986 L200. I've replaced water pumps, done timing belts, tensioners etc, I've done brakes, ALL with my Stanly socket set.

So now that I've had my socket set stolen I need to purchase a new set. I have NO experience with other brands of tools, but I want to buy the best I can within my price range.

The jobs I currently need to undertake is replacing the water pump on my 1986 L200, which involves taking apart all the timing belt and tensioner parts.

I also might have to drop the gear box on my 93 Subaru RS and do the clutch.

I also need to replace the clutch on my sisters 1990 Liberty, and possibly replace the engine as I think the rings are gone.

I hope I've explained myself enough for your satisfaction.

    Thanks

    • Supercheap are still the cheapest as far as I know and they have a 20% off sale tomorrow, Saturday 30th in QLD. You might have to join the Club though?

Have a look online at their range, it's extensive http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/search-results.aspx?keyword… (online) and varied so only you could tell which is best for you.
