DDR3 RAM prices going through the roof

Was browsing reddit when I read this

So apparently there's been a major price hike involving computer RAM. Monitoring MSY's prices, this 8GB kit for example used to cost around $51 but has now risen to $68.

Some reckon this is a good time to start stockpiling RAM — although there's also the possibility it might be just a hiccup in the production line or a shortage of DRAM that's causing a temporary price increase.

Thoughts?

    Yes.

    CPU I bought in November 2012 (i7 3770) - $297, now $309

    RAM I bought (16GB IEM DDR3 1600MHz) in November was $89, now $128

    $51 extra now.

Rest hasn't really shifted or has gone up $1 or so. Why is a mystery.

Isn't DDR4 slated for release Q4 this year, or Q1 2014? I won't be surprised if it releases around the same time as Haswell. Perhaps the price hike is due to decreased production of DDR3, as DDR4 production ramps up. Either that, or the manufacturers are trying to squeeze every last dollar out of the specification before it becomes redundant.

Either way, not good for those looking to build… lucky I've already decided to wait.

    • Yep, it will be a good time to upgrade later this year.

    • Whatever DDR4 that gets released first will be for servers, i.e. Xeon class Intel chips. See the end of this article: http://arstechnica.com/business/2012/05/ddr4-memory-is-comin…

And even if consumer desktop/notebook DDR4 comes this year or next I wouldn't sweat about it. The initial modules will probably have similar clock speeds to the fastest DDR3 modules, have poor latency figures and probably cost a bomb.

2015 is probably a more suitable time to start looking at DDR4.

Ah, thanks. I followed up with some reading and you're right.
This article covers both the original topic, and that of DDR4.

Yes, computer equipment likely has stopped it's multi decade price declines. The fact is over the last few years, desktop computing has stagnated. i7 has been out for years and no new contender, DDR3 the ram has not changed, Hard Drives have not changed, still at the $100 for 2TB it has been for years. Using previous metrics, we should now be buying 4TB drives for $100, 6GHz i7 for $300, 16GB DDR3 2100 for $50. One good thing is your computer investment over the last few years has not deprecated in value.

It's not surprising that when something stops falling in value, it begins to rise.

  • Didn't think this was going to be THAT massive of a jump; have been watching Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB on ebay, has gone from $54 to $79.95 in just over a month.
