Urgently need a fridge

Hey Ozbargainers,

Found out this afternoon that I need to move house in the next four days and I desperately need a fridge!

My budget is $600-$650 and I'm after one that's 350-450L in size. Really want great value for money, known and well regarded brand, the usual. Hope I'm not dreaming for a fridge this big at this price. Plz help me OzB!

  • My sole advice, don't get either:
    1. Fisher & Paykel
    2. Upside down (bottom freezer) designs

That said, I've had a great run out of the Westinghouse fridges I've owned over the years, but I'm not sure if the modern ones are up to the same standard.

I'd be checking out http://www.2ndsworld.com.au and Bing Lee though, these guys often have good specials.

    • Why is that? I tick both boxes (an upside down F&P fridge), and it has been awesome…

      • Mine (E522B) has been nothing but trouble. Never again!

Poor design means frequent failure of the fridge cooling fan, along with shocking noise all night due to ice formation in the cooling duct. When you understand the design of these things, you start to realise exactly why they are so problematic. Seriously, when I first got it, I literally thought somebody was trying to break into the house the first couple of nights!!!

You could also fry an egg on the side of it during summer! My repair guy got sick of replacing the fan, he ended up just telling me how to do it myself to save (my) money & (his) time…mind you, the fan costs ~$90 a throw, for essentially an 80mm PC fan with a fancy rubber mount.

The rack system also wastes a lot of freezer space, so much wasted room behind & to the sides of the baskets…plus, if you're any taller than a hobbit, finding stuff in the freezer is an open invitation to back pain. Just piss poor design all around IME.

  • Check out the Masters Hardware appliances on their website, know someone with a woolworths staff card? Less 5% off the ticket. Stick with main brands, Westinghouse, F&P, Samsung, Electrolux..

Appliances online and masters both offer delivery.. Saves wasting your time too.

  • Spend the $650 on a trailer instead and use it to pick up a fridge here?

    • you'd probably spend $650 in electricity in the first year on some of those old fridges.

      I'd gumtree a $300 1-2 year old fridge.
