Cheapest Unlocked Mobile Phones available (and where)

A friend in FNQ has asked me to purchase a cheap (unlocked) mobile he would only be using for a month whilst on holiday in southern Qld.

Can you suggest where I might buy the cheapest (unlocked) mobiles from?

Friend plans to use a Vodafone sim card as everyone he knows is using Vodafone, and the Pre-Paid International option of $20 per month would give him unlimited Vodafone to Vodafone calls. He only wishes to purchase a NEW mobile.

Thank you.

  • I think I saw an unlocked phone from Coles for $27

  • FNQ is still in Australia no? Why not look at Vodafone offers on their site or on supermarket sites? The cheapest prepaid on the Vodafone site is $35. Locked, of course, but if he intends to use Vodafone, is that a problem? Or does he intend to churn to another carrier afterwards?

    • He does live in a remote area, only visiting a town that has a supermarket once a fortnight. The assumption is that I would probably have better chance of obtaining a bargain, living in a Melbourne suburb, than he would.

Vodafone and other carriers probably would not work in his district. He was only wanting to use one when he visits a populated area, perhaps once or twice a year. A pre-paid to use while he visits the Gold Coast would be very useful, but the phone itself would not get much use. I suggested unlocked so he would hopefully be able to use it sometime in the future … maybe … and you never know what carriers would be available then.

  • Some Coles are selling unlocked Nokia 101 for $27. Officeworks charges $37 for it. Coles Oakleigh, Vic are advertising a Nokia C2-05 in pink for $29 on Vodafone. A Nokia C2-01 is a lot nicer than a 101/C2-05 (bigger battery, has camera, nicer screen and menus). Can get one off ebay for ~$40.

  • Thanks for your responses all - They are very much appreciated.

I am sending him some copies of the phone so he can decide if this is what he wants.

    Cheers!
