Red and white wine for wedding reception

Will need about 12 bottles of each, but the problem is we don't really drink wine.
looking at under $15 a bottle(cheaper the better), something that everyone can drink but wine lovers will still appreciate which I've been told is hard to get for that price.

Our Menu is southern/creole, so bbq beef brisket and southern fried chicken with sides like collard greens, coleslaw, bbq beans ect. Dessert is a selection of pies which include key lime, pecan, cherry also mini jam donuts and a few other treats.

One red I looked at was

As I have no idea your help is much appreciated.

You aren't going to be able to negotiate a fabulous price on two cartons of wine. Dan Murphy's are a good bet however I would look at the wine sales at Graysonline.com. I just bought a carton of wine for $8.50 per bottle delivered and the recommended price is $30 (from the cellar door, admittedly). I don't know anything about matching wines with food, I just know what I like and stick to that. I am sure there would be plenty of help in advising the best sort of wine to complement your food. Good luck.

  • Can't help with wines, but your menu sounds great!

  • For bbq'ed food, I would probably go for a richer flavoured wine, for example a Shiraz or a Cabernet Sauvignon. The one you picked from Dan Murphy's actually looks really good, I actually want to get one myself and try it out. For whites, I think generally you'll find most people like Sauvignon Blanc, and you'll find heaps of these at different price ranges everywhere. I bought a Distant Land one from Grays before I think and it tasted quite alright. So yes, just like what robbyjones suggested, Graysonline is a great place to look at if you want to look for something that costs a lot less than what they're actually worth. Also try www.winemarket.com.au, sometimes they issue voucher codes and you can get another $30 off your total price. Your menu sounds yummy by the way!

  • I would stay away from Graysonline for wine. Mostly end of life stock.

We sampled alot of Champagnes for our wedding and went with this one:

It is actually super nice - the ladies smashed every bottle of it!

For white wines - I would recommend a Suav Blanc - the best in my view come from the Marlborough region in NZ -> This one is not the best - but it is easily the best value:

In terms of red - I probably can't offer too much in the way of advice on brands - Other than to say it is most difficult to find a nice red wine.

We had a summer wedding so only got a few bottles. At a winter wedding red would be more popular. My only concern with the red you have selected is the 1 review reads like sock-puppeting.

    • That is my worry with Graysonline, it is cheap but you don't really know what you're getting and I cannot risk it as I need it in 2 weeks.

I'll take at look at the two you recommended.

  • I'm a Perthian and a fan of the Margaret River reds. You can often pick up the following for $15 and under:

    MadFish Premium Red
    Forrester Estate Cab Merlot
    Evans & Tate

Or non MR Wynns Cabernet Shiraz Merlot (the one with the red stripe on the label) is always nice.
