A new suit for a city accounting firm interview (MELBOURNE)

Hey guys, i just received an interview for a graduate accounting position.

I've never owned a decent suit and was wondering where everyone would suggest i'd go for a decent one at a good price?

Ideally something $2-300? But i'm open to anything more than less.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Much appreciated.

  • I'm in the same boat. It's a terrible boat to be in. I'm waiting for themensshop to have another sale on their pure wool suits, then probably pick up a few. Is the interview soon or can you wait?

  • I bought my suit from David Jones 2 years ago for $300. Although it was pricey then, I haven't looked back. You're better off spending more on a decent suit than buying a cheap suit that just don't fit or is not as presentable. I did wear the suit to numerous interviews and got most jobs.

As long as you have your suit and tie you can leave it all on the floor at your job interview.

  • I agree with above, better spend a little more for a good fitted suit that you can use over & over in several interviews than a cheap one. $2-300 is good price. don't buy those cheap stuff from kmart etc. or don't buy those thats on sale but not your size! people can tell right away what material or brand you're wearing. same for your shoes , bag & watch etc. if you do not have nice watch don't wear one. do not wear a cheapie plasticky $10 watch… good luck with the interview!!

  • I suggest you bite the bullet and spend some money. Also, get another pair of pants. If you get the job, you will need to wear a suit every day (I work for one of these firms) and you will want something that will wear well and last - not just survive a couple of interviews.

Pure wool is best but don't spend a fortune - if it helps, I perform graduate recruitment on occasion and we know and understand graduates aren't rich! Good luck!

  • yes unfortunately people are shallow and the rich shallower
there must be many places you can get a good suit.
but googling may help if you try the right keywords [cheap suit, melbourne etc, ]
remember some manufacturers in sydney used to sell their suits and then modify them to give you a better fit.
so there are places but with everything you should know what you are doing and need a male fashion guru to help you, read up on the net etc on suits etc…

  • Don't write off Myer or DJs as being out of your range. I've picked up some great bargains in suits there. I once picked up a good suit for $99 (down from $599) from Myer as it was the last one in that size. But in general, you'll find quite a few suits in your price range there.

  • David Jones is currently having a good sale on Mens suits, stuff that are normally 6-700 are down to about 3-400 so its definately worth a look for $300 for a good fitting basic suit probably try the brands West End by Simon Carter or even Studio italia which might be a little bit more but generally they come with 2 pants
