USB Reciever for N54L won't 'listen' to Universal remote

Hi Everyone,

I bought an N54L a while back and am slowly making it my primary media center but one thing has thrown me:

I bought a cheapo USB remote and reciever - same model as pictured in http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-IR-Receiver-Wireless-Media-Re…

but although I can 'teach' my Logitech Harmony One commands (when I press a button it acknowledges it) the reciever doesn't acknowledge it's button presses.

Has anyone had this? Is it a technical limitation? Any suggestions? I would rather if libcec worked through HDMI on video cards but that doesn't seem to be the case…

I essentially want to (ideally) control XBMC and maybe, to a basic extent, the pc from my universal remote.

Cheers.

  • I have one of those on order for my N54L too, also for use with my harmony remote (although I have an old 515).

The receiver would need to be recognised by your operating system first. What OS are you using? If windows, there should be a "administrator settings->device manager somewhere. In there should be a list of recognised things in the USB ports.

Once the OS recognises it, then make sure xbmc is set up to use it.

Then see if you can send and receive commands from the remote that came bundled with it.

Once that's working, then you can try and set up the harmony to work with it.

edit: in the mean time, there's an xbmc remote app for android you could use on your phone if you have an android phone on the same network as the htpc.

    • Thanks for replying. I should have been clear. The included remote works as required. Arrow keys, even weird keys like fullscreen etc.

Edit. Sorry I do have those going also. I use yatse. So the system as a whole is functional. I just want my harmony to mimic the included remote for usb device so i can put that remote in the cupboard.

      • hmm, so when you're using the harmony to 'learn' the usb remote's keys (pointing the usb remote at the harmony), it says it recieved them, but doesn't seem to be sending them back out again after learning?

have you tried trying to just find a generic 'profile' in the harmony PC software for usb remotes and programming that instead of learning the codes?

        • also, this might be useful? (and the surrounding thread)

        • Hi Salem!

Thank you so much for your help and assistance, sorry for slipping off the planet after all your hard work but I've had the flu and a one year old which has taken all my time. Will try some of the tips from the forum over the weekend and see how I go!

          Thanks again!
