Dan Murphy's Free Wine Tastings

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Paraphrase from web page: To celebrate Aussie Wine Month, Dan Murphy's will be holding free weekly wine tastings (not available in Burwood or Manly Vale, NSW). This week's tastings are from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 April during store opening hours.

Comment: The web page mentions over 60 wines will be on offer, but it only lists 10 wines. I guess which wines are on offer will change from week to week. I am uncertain if all 10 wines listed are available at all stores, all days, and all times. I am also uncertain how many bottles of that $150 Penfold's RWT are available for tasting at each store.

They have tasting there all the time and they're always free, why is this a bargain?

I'll take your word that free wine tastings are available all the time, because I cannot find a reference to that effect. All I could find is this reference that gave a limited timeframe for tasting: Friday 4-7 PM & Saturday 2-6 PM. http://www.weekendnotes.com.au/free-wine-tastings-dan-murphy… Can you give us an update on DM's regular wine tastings times please?

Please feel free to neg the deal and to report it for unpublication.

      • I cannot find a reference to that effect.

My local one nearly always has something available for tasting, up front next to the registers…

Can you give us an update on DM's regular wine tastings times please?

Ask your local store. I'm sure it differs between stores. Often they have someone from the winery or brewery there too so obviously they can't be at all stores at the same time.

You're own link states at the top "This week's tastings"

        url is

          1. Sorry I don't know your local one.
          2. Nearly always means availability is not guaranteed.
          3. Has something available means the tasting wines may not be in-stock.
          4. This week's tasting refers to this second week in April (Aussie Wine Month).

I guess that makes this a deal worthy of posting. If you want to nitpick, please do it properly and support your words with concrete info.

Nearly always means availability is not guaranteed.

The link you posted is for the "weekly tastings", what is available for tasting will differ by store…

I guess that makes this a deal worthy of posting.

So which wines will be available for tasting, since the deal you posted is so different for the regular free tastings ?

By the way, here are the free tastings from 2 weeks ago

          http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:RqroJSr…

It's the same link by the way…

Every week in every Dan Murphy's store* you have the opportunity to taste a range of our featured products.

        • I have no control over what URL DM decides to use. Moreover, the content of that web page shows it is especially written for this second week of Aussie Wine Month. The top banner Aussie Wine Month > More Info also back links to the deal URL, which implies these are special tastings sessions.

I do not wish to debate with you whether these are regular or special tastings. As to your original question why is this a bargain, I will leave it to my fellow members and the Mods to judge. You are free to show your displeasure by negging the deal and to report it.

        • Moreover, the content of that web page shows it is especially written for this second week of Aussie Wine Month.

So what is special about it? and why did you post it? since I've shown you above that they always have free weekly tastings and use the same link you posted.

          http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:RqroJSr…

        • I regularly see tastings at at least 2 different nearby Dan's on Fridays late arvo/early evening

I posted it because I judged it worthy, because of the wines on offer and the extended times for tastings. You can show me anything you want but I do not require your permission to submit a post. I do not need to justify my post to you. I am accountable to the wider OzBargain Community, of which you and I are just two insignificant individuals.

So neg the deal, report it or shut up. It makes no difference to me. I have better bargains to hunt down than to waste my time arguing with you and using up valuable discussion space. Happy now?

  • Most Dan Murphy's I've been to have a permanent stand set up for tasting. Have for at least two years. Open weekly on Fridays and Saturdays, at least they're the days I remember tasting anything.

  • This isn't a deal Dans has had tasting on a regular basis since one opened near me 14 or so years ago, presumably before then too.
    Forum at best for this.

EDIT as mentioned above local one has a nice tasting area set up.
EDIT I've never had to pay for a wine tasting either.

  • jv, redraoh, ZRXS12, and other members: If you do not think this is a deal then please neg it and report it. I am not going to waste your time and mine to debate whether this series of tastings are regular or special. Life is short and there are other bargains to be had. Let us all enjoy life and stop arguing over one small (non-)deal.

  • lol you alcos, go enjoy your free wine and be quiet

  • None of my locals have free tastings…just FWIW! ;)

  • All I'm interested in is free bloody shipping stuff the wine tastings :) But I agree it's not a deal it's a requirement of they're contract with wine makers.

  • Received the info on this week's free tasting here. Some of the premium wines at free tasting tomorrow:

    • Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Rioja Spain
    • Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage France
    • St Hallett Old Block Shiraz 201x
    • Jack Daniels Gold Label Whiskey
    • Johnnie Walker Blue Label Scotch Whisky
    • Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale 355mL Bottles

Seems like a weekly thing now?

    • "…Seems like a weekly thing now?…"

since the first post, and the one above yours Scotty, was April 2013…

      • Yeah I know. I was sent the PDF brochure about the wine testing yesterday so instead of posting about it, I searched and found this. Instead if creating a new thread I decided just to continue the discussion. When @alvian posted back in 2013 it sounds like a once-off thing. However from their website it appears to have become a weekly event.

        • As JV posted above, - always has been.
Only thing is, it is usually the "premium" stuff that "normal" people would not buy.
You may sometimes find a winery rep from something more affordable, but it will be a rare event.

Still a good option if you really must taste some of this stuff. It is often no better than reasonable priced booze.

On last visit to local DM recently, they were free tasting some imported french (I think) vino @ ~ $80 bottle.
I bought three bottles of good Aussie plonk from the bargain bin behind the tastings @$4each.
Expected to get cooking wine,- was very pleasantly surprised.
