I've got the HERO3 Black, I'ts a damn good camera, still a little buggy atm.. hopefully some software updates in the future will fix!

As for your question. The battery BacPac is an addon that clips into the rear of the HERO3. It also includes an extra rear door housing and it makes the (Awesomely thin) HERO3 thicker. It does give better battery and also has LEDs that light up when filming etc, and a mini LCD showing the battery indicator. The BacPac is fully enclosed and has the battery built in. This of course is the new BacPac version- There is an old type and it is also compatible. I picked up the new variant for around $65 at Repco. In regards to buying batteries you can purchase genuine ($30~) or cheap ones off the internet. These are basically a plug and play or swap out once the old one dies. Of course its better to buy a 'out of camera' charger too otherwise the battery's themselves need to be charged in the camera. The BacPac allows you to continually film for longer without replacing the battery. I myself use both as they are handy in different situations.

Hope I shed some light with my essay!

  • awsome thanks for the detailed description. ill work out what I can afford and decide with which to buy.
    cheers

  • Cam comes with 1 regular battery, so go the battery BacPac. Recharge via usb port. Only adds a little bulk and weight.
