After 3 March 2009 the Reserve Bank of Australia introduced ATM direct charging in Australia.
This allows ATM operators to charge their users a fee for completing a transaction at the ATM. The fee is displayed and charged by the ATM owner at the time of use, and will appear as a separate item on your account statement.
After October 2017 the four major banks (CBA, NAB, ANZ and WBC) announced that they would no longer charge the direct ATM fee for other Australian cards. See:
This means that if you want to use an ATM not from a major bank you may still be charged foreign ATM fees - unless your banking product rebates the fee (see, for example, ING Direct and Macquarie).
ATM transactions with your own bank are almost always fee free. You can also use the following ATMs fee-free:
|Your Bank||You can use these ATMs in Australia fee free|

* Note: Particular account types may have a limited number of fee-free non-affiliated ATM transactions per month, after which any further transactions will attract a fee.
(1) ING Direct has no own brand ATMs. They will instantly rebate the transaction fee for any ATM withdrawals within Australia, provided you deposited $1000+ per month into your Orange Everyday from an external account and made at least 5 card purchases using your ING debit or credit card (excluding ATM withdrawals, balance enquiries, cash advances and EFTPOS cash out only transactions). ING will also rebate up to 5 international ATM fees per month if you meet the above criteria.
(2) Any ATM fees in Australia will be refunded.
(3) NAB ATMs located in Coles Express service stations are or have been transitioned out of the rediATM network.
