Best Banh Mi / Vietnamese Pork Roll

I wanted an OzB opinion from the best community on the internet.

Name your best Banh mi place. I will attend this location and try it out.

Hell, I might even start a poll.

I have a solid addiction to banh mi and consider myself a real connoisseur.

I'm tired of reading google reviews of trash locations claiming "best Banh mi ever…"

My top locations ranked in top order as close as possible. I obviously haven't tried them all but I'll try a banh mi in every possible location I travel too.

  1. Luke's bakery - Moonee ponds.
    The best. Hands down.

(The Reservoir store is still amazing, but for some unknown reason not as good)

  2. Top Ryde Baker's House - Ryde.

  3. N. Lee bakery - Collingwood.

  4. Marrickville pork roll - Marrickville

  5. Lee Lee bakehouse - Richmond

  6. Lai bakery - Sunbury.

Sorry, to Queenslandlers, I've tried a fair few places up there and they are all not great, but have exhausted every location.

Sorry to offend anyone if your favourite place isn't here. Lay it on me and I'll try.

      • Australia has mostly butchered pizza to a point it's just slop. Luckily it's not all like that, but most of it is.

        • I think that’s what I mean, there’s a real distinction in quality, so worth comparing.

    • Lol I explain everything you've said in this thread to every "baahhn mee" aficionado and I've turned into this Vietnamese killjoy.

I have more respect for people who call it a pork roll instead of baarrhhn mee.

      • When did the transition from pork roll happen?

I know there's still a few out there selling pork rolls but as this thread attests its certainly not the trend.

  • Have you tried Porkies Fortitude valley ?

    • +1

No, but I'm up that way next month. So I'll add it to my itinerary. Thank you.

      • I thought Scott's Rd next to Darra station was supposed to be the best in Brisbane.
Can't comment though as I'm not a Bahn mi connoisseur.

    • Another vote for Porkees. Their sandwiches are excellent. Their pho is crap, however. It lacks flavour, and it's too sweet.

    • I remember Porkies Kings Cross. It was definitely not a banh mi place! haha

  • They can all be pretty good. Sometimes sparse toppings, not seasoned well, rock hard bread. Other times it's great, best sandwich you've ever et.

  • Just have a look at Issac eats a lot instagram

  • +3

Can you pls add price from when you last bought.

  • +4

You obviously didn't try the roast pork banh mi at Scotts Rd Takeaway, Darra, QLD.

  • +3

    Banh Mi Bay Ngo Bankstown

Banh mi Phuong 18 Bankstown (takes card!)

    Both better than Marrickville IMO

    • +1

Bay Ngo is tasteless, so is Nam Fong. Phuong 18 is decent, a bit overdone.

Bankstown had no decent banh mi place for decades until Phuong 18 opened.

      • Agree. Bay Ngo used to be our favourite plate but the quality went down as the price went up.

Phuong 18 is my favourite these days, and agree that it is cheaper and better than Marrickville.

        • Haven't been to Ngo since Phuong 18 has opened. Good to know. Last time I went to Marrickville I was disappointed. Ultimately though being able to pay by card has The biggest draw for me.

  • i quite like the bahn mi from French Baguette Cafe in Footscray

  • +2

Bsst in sydney is in Canley vale and Cabramatta, top ryde is ok, if you think packing as much in a roll as you can constitutes "best".

  • +2

Banh mi Viet, St Albans. I'm surprised that anyone would rate the Fresh Chilli higher than this one. To me, Banh mi Viet tastes better, is cheaper, bigger and has more fillings than any others I have tried. Their pork crackling is my favourite.

    • +1 this.
I've always thought fresh chili to be highly overrated. Bread is not the best and lacks filling

  • +1

if you're in adelaide follow the group vietnamese of adelaide on facebook

  • +1

taste is subjective. E.g one of the pork roll places in bankstown is always on TV and rated the best, but the bakery (Nam fong) next to the butcher a few doors up is far better

Similar to the pho shop across from the leagues club, but there are so many places that do smaller more manageable bowls that are still great like the shop at the intersection thu beo, granted its not my go to for pho because the other stuff they have is better and the place is lacking by western design, but thats why I like places like this and HK kitchen in chatswood, the place reminds me of places I have been to

Any poll on banh mi can safely avoid Canberra. The quality here is dreadful and dominated by Ms Ba Co. No thanks.

  • Anyone know of places to get gluten free banh mi?

    • May as well get a Vietnamese vermicelli salad if you need GF, just be mindful of the soy depending on the level of allergy/intolerance. The inclusions and flavours would be very similar to Banh mi.

  • roll mi (if they're still operating), Telstra building, corner of Little Lonsdale & Exhibition Street Melbourne. get there before office lunch hour as it is a long wait to be served otherwise. the reason I say if they're still operating is because they are located in a small food court & all the other takeaway shops around them are now closed due to the pandemic & it's consequences.

    • They are still there dude and they are still awesome!

  • +1

Just went there today to Luke's bakery and it is top notch. Would recommend any day.
Very nice flavours and fillings. Cheap too.

    • Awesome, I'm so envious that you're having it for the first time.
I can't discern a winner between the Luke's special and Luke's favourite, so I usually get both.

  • Little Pho Tuckshop in Kew.
I’m yet to find a place that comes close, but will need to try a few suggestions in the comments.

  • TRBH is very aesthetic but it's taste is average at best.

  • +1

I found pork roll shop with no competition locally will be highly rated in google.

  • +2

Non on your list from Springvale or Footscray? You're missing out lol..

  • Should we separate the list by State to make it easier?

  • Davelle’s Bakery in Epping NSW is amazing.

Personally I find Bun Bun to be highly overrated, most times I’ve eaten there I get a stomach ache afterwards.

  • Smallish Bakery opposite Aldi in Northcote Plaza - renowned locally for its Banh Mi - the queue winds its way infront of the fruit + veggie shop next door - best one I've had. There is a medium sized bakery in Nhill - surprising good - that serves a great Banh Mi - although I'm not sure whether its the surprise of actually finding one that far out of Melbourne.

    • Had to look this one up. "Best baked Daily" for anyone interested.
I will try this one in the near future.
Thank you for the hot tip.

    • This one is my second favourite, they're good (the Northcote Plaza one).

  • +1

    Hochi Mini - Ferntree Gully

    Top tier there IMO

    • +2

      Lol the name,

  • +3

MCQ in Mirrabooka. It's a tiny place in a shitty suburban mall but they do fantastic BM. $7.50 for the roast pork, which is a bargain.

There's a place in Coventry Village Morley that's also really good but I don't know the name.

    • +1

      7.5$ is really cheap!

      • I know. I often get extra pork which is only $2 more.

    • it's common they run out as well and they also offer crackling options and the sort.

  • +1

While Top Ryde is good I think there is better, used to buy from them in their old location in that shopping centre before they became popular. I think the crispy pork roll from destination roll is one of the best, perfect sized freshly baked in store roll, great pate fresh and they only do Banh Mi. Have had good Banh Mi, in Vietnam and Canada as well.

    • Agreed, it's overrated. Why people queue up for 30 mins for a pork roll (any pork roll) I really can't fathom. And yes, I remember them from when they were down near where K-Mart is now.

  • +3

Hong Ha in Mascot? Surprised that's not on the list, people start lining up before it opens.

    Appreciate the list btw.

    • +1

      +1 for Hong Ha.

  • This place was pretty good when I tried it this morning in Bankstown
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/ESR96b8tSiUyuV6A9?g_st=ic

    Banh mi Phuong 18

  • Not any shops in Cabramatta?

  • +1

Wallsend Bakery in Wallsend, Newcastle NSW

    • Solid banh mi and the staff are always extremely friendly. I think they just need to work on their bread. In recent months, the bread rolls have been massive and a bit dry.

  • +1

I found Top Ryde whilst decent to be overhyped. Hong Ha and OG Marrickville Pork Roll ftw. Cabra rolls much nostalgia and cost per bite can't be beat.
Give Alex n Rolls a try - tasty modern take on the pork roll.
Source: Viet guy who grew up in Cabra.

    • +1

Vinata hot bread is great, since 1989, if anyone care about food hygiene, I've been delivered goods to most of the bread shops and this shop definitely stands out, very clean!

      • Vinata has the best cheese and bacon roll ever. To take it up a notch, as a teenager, trying to 'beef' up, we used to ask them to put sui mai in the cheese and bacon roll.

      • I rate their pate chaud highly

    • That hot bread place next to Vinh Phat was $5 for a roll last time I was there

  • -1

St Clair Bakery. Massive and delicious pork rolls.
Marrickville pork roll is top tier, but this place is definitely up there, maybe even better.

  • I've tried Marrickville, Top Ryde, and Xcel roll, none of them come close to Destination Roll (although I appreciate that's an unpopular opinion). I've been to Vietnam and admit that they are even better than DR though.

    • I rate destination roll per a few posts back.

  • Bakery on Sydney road Coburg, near corner of Harding street does a consistently good traditional one with fresh chili for $8

  • HM Wrap & Roll in Ballarat.
They are loaded with pork and fresh ingredients at a great price.
Much better than any I have had in the city.

  • Daily Delicious Bakery 5 at Cabra .. I've only had the crispy pork but it's fantastic. I've eaten my fair share of banh mi around the globe.

    • +1

This one is pretty good. Their service is terrible which is part of the experience I guess.

      • Customer service is non existence in Cabra, lol.

  • +1

They have almost zero online presence. Called Cafe 204 on google (204 Lower Dandenong Rd, Mordialloc VIC 3195). Pretty sure the sign on the store is Sammie's banh mi and pho or something like that.

Delicious roast pork with crackling banh mi or can get chicken too. The pho is quite good but never tried it. I eaten at several on the list and still rate this place.

    • +1

It's by far my favourite too.

It is just before Moorabbin Airport.

  • +2

Banh mi Phuong 18 in Bankstown :) The taste is quite authentic Saigon banh mi with homemade sauce. Not sure about their crispy pork roll as I don't like crispy pork in banh mi, but their pork roll & chicken roll are great. It's my go to banh mi place now.

  • +1

A Vietnamese friend reckons our Viet food is better than in Vietnam. I have been there and agree as far as banh mi. Our bread is fresher and the meat of a better quality. My faves are bun bun in Springvale. Banh
mi girl in Moorabbin . Footscray has a few too

    • Its more a case of its just everywhere. Its cheap humble food. So there are alot more places where quality varies, more cheap forgettable holes in the wall. There are great places though just like here it takes effort (or luck).

  • If you’re heading to the Goldy could you please share your thoughts on:
    Saigon Hot Bread
    Miami Hot bread
    My Saigon Tuckshop

    • Miami

      • Miami?

        • Went there a few years ago. Might have changed

          • @tazzeedevil: Yeah I like it. Hard to say though as I’m from Sydney and haven’t been back for a long time so my memory of the traditional Sydney ones has faded. Miami hot bread is walking distance from my house, it does have a habit of closing over holiday periods when I’m more inclined to get a banh mi on the way back from the beach.

    • I'm no connoisseur but had Saigon Tuckshop last weekend and used to eat Miami (BBQ Pork) quite often till about a year ago (no longer work in the area).
Both are on good bread, I prefer Miami's toppings but I think Saigon Tuckshop's pork flavour just edges out Miami.

      • I enjoy the lemongrass beef one from Miami hot bread. Not traditional at all, but very tasty.

  • +2

    Best I've had:

    Nhu Ngoc Bakery in Footscray
    N Lee in Collingwood
Marrickville Pork Roll in Marrickville obv
    Cyclo in Hobart
    Luke's in Mooney Ponds

  • -2

    Anyone do halal?

  • if you're going to bun bun - I've heard of one recommended by Springvale locals that they say is the best. It's inside Springvale Shopping Centre near the base of the escalators (there are two places that serve bahn mi there apparently, it's one of these).

    • +1

That one's called Anloi Deli and it's definitely better than Bun Bun IMO.

      • +1

I never understood why people liked bun bun so much. I tried it was disappointed, I always go to TT Bakehouse near the woolies

        • I reckon because it’s well-known and always busy.

Never had that one, might have to check it out sometime.

  • I like Huynh Hoa in Saigon.

Viet Hoa in Cabramatta is okay. Phuong 18 in Bankstown hits differently, also okay. Marrickville pork roll okay.

There's a shop selling tamarind chicken roll in the alley near Viet Hoa. Decent but overpriced.

    • Huynh Hoa in Saigon is good, last time I was there in October 2019 a roll was 42,000 Dong, probably close to double that now with inflation.

  • Apparently, Lily's in Scoresby in the best in Melbourne - and speaking from today - its justified

  • Go to dulwich hill close to post office. One of the best

  • +1

Shepherd Bay Cake & Bakery Meadowbank - really nice fresh crispy rolls, good heavy serving of roast pork ;)

Oberon Bakehouse - always good and fresh.

  • Nguyên hot bread in canley Vale. Everyone else is wrong.

    • Lol .. haven't been to canley for a while. Will pay it a visit when I drive by one day

  • +1

Ca Com Bánh Mì Bar - Richmond - https://www.cacom.net.au/

    https://maps.app.goo.gl/LRM24wxUPXJcBzUb9

Though they had a fire late last year to thier wood grill, not sure if been fixed yet but still making amazing BM.

  • +4

Phu Cuong King's Hot Bread on Forest Road Hurstville. Most of the time customers are lined up outside with at least four dedicated "rollers" & 30+ menu items.
Generously sized, fresh ingredients & delicious.

    My Sydney tops:

    Hong ha -MASCOT
    Marrickville pork roll
    Top Ryde pork roll
    Alex Roll -Marrickville
Cabra pork roll -the one outside one of the alley that also sells Pandan waffle and other Asian bun

  • Darra takeaway in Brisbane is a good Brisbane one. Well known by Brisbane locals. Dodgy as looking place and cash only but the crispy pork is tops

    • +1

From my experience, the dodgier a Banh Mi place looks, the better the Banh Mi is going to be haha

  • Banh Mi Bay Cafe
5/650 Pittwater Rd, Brookvale NSW 2100
