Best Banh Mi / Vietnamese Pork Roll

I wanted an OzB opinion from the best community on the internet.

Name your best Banh mi place. I will attend this location and try it out.

Hell, I might even start a poll.

I have a solid addiction to banh mi and consider myself a real connoisseur.

I'm tired of reading google reviews of trash locations claiming "best Banh mi ever…"

My top locations ranked in top order as close as possible. I obviously haven't tried them all but I'll try a banh mi in every possible location I travel too.

  1. Luke's bakery - Moonee ponds.
    The best. Hands down.

(The Reservoir store is still amazing, but for some unknown reason not as good)

  2. Top Ryde Baker's House - Ryde.

  3. N. Lee bakery - Collingwood.

  4. Marrickville pork roll - Marrickville

  5. Lee Lee bakehouse - Richmond

  6. Lai bakery - Sunbury.

Sorry, to Queenslandlers, I've tried a fair few places up there and they are all not great, but have exhausted every location.

Sorry to offend anyone if your favourite place isn't here. Lay it on me and I'll try.

    • I've tried the humble offerings of GC and cairnes.
      With nothing noteworthy.
I'm in Brissy in 4 weeks and have 3 to try. (Which I will get to. )
The little Ky son has been added to the list. Appreciate the suggestion.

      • The Little Ky Son should be opening soonish. They have been closed for the last 6 months due to a fire at a Vap store that damaged part of the shopping centre. Looking forward to your reviews of the Brissy area.

      • Try Fat Carrot in west end. Crispy pork. And report back. They do a lunch special with juice if you're thirsty too.

      • If you have a chance and if it hasn’t been suggested, do give The Annerley Kitchen a try. Their traditional pork is my favourite :)
Bread n Roll Bakery in Logan Central is also good and cheap at $7.50 the last time I was there.
I’ve seen people mention Scotts Rd Takeaway in Darra, but I like Darra Takeaway better.

  • Try Bun Bun bakery in Springvale. Their best one is roasted pork roll. The taste is authentic imo.

  • Everyone just recommends the places in/near their neighbourhood/work.

    • bit difficult to recommend places you haven't tried?

      • Of course, that’s the point. There’s sampling bias based on where ozbargainers live and work. So it’s not “best”, it’s “best of the ones someone has tried”. Although even if you tried all of them you’d have a hard time ranking them all 😂.

  • +1

The hot bread shop in Cabramatta. I remember the days when they used to cost 4 for $10!

  • Hi OP, you can't really rank them without taking into account their pricing. And this is ozbargain. The best tasting banh mi that costs $20 vs the second best tasting that costs $10, which one would you choose to eat regularly? Can you add the price to those places for their baseline product (eg classic)?
Not to mention that, above a certain threshold, taste is very much a personal preference. Just like not everyone likes vegemite or blue cheese or coriander.
