Best Banh Mi / Vietnamese Pork Roll

I wanted an OzB opinion from the best community on the internet.

Name your best Banh mi place. I will attend this location and try it out.

Hell, I might even start a poll.

I have a solid addiction to banh mi and consider myself a real connoisseur.

I'm tired of reading google reviews of trash locations claiming "best Banh mi ever…"

My top locations ranked in top order as close as possible. I obviously haven't tried them all but I'll try a banh mi in every possible location I travel too.

  1. Luke's bakery - Moonee ponds.
    The best. Hands down.

(The Reservoir store is still amazing, but for some unknown reason not as good)

  2. Top Ryde Baker's House - Ryde.

  3. N. Lee bakery - Collingwood.

  4. Marrickville pork roll - Marrickville

  5. Lee Lee bakehouse - Richmond

  6. Lai bakery - Sunbury.

Sorry, to Queenslandlers, I've tried a fair few places up there and they are all not great, but have exhausted every location.

Sorry to offend anyone if your favourite place isn't here. Lay it on me and I'll try.

Comments

  • Bun Bun in Springvale Victoria used to be pretty decent. (Although haven't been there in a long long time so not sure if it is still any good)

    • Still very good.

  • +1

Jamison bakery, Penrith. Best traditional porkies and best crackling porkies I've ever had!

  • +2

If you can swallow $14 for a crispy pork roll try heartbakers Melbourne CBD

  • Western rolls in Deer Park are pretty damn good. Very authentic. Worth a visit. The bowls are great too

  • One question that hasn't been asked. What's supposed to be the 'standard' pork filling?

    • roasted pork in bbq sauce
    • mixed ham roll
    • pork ham roll
    • bbq pork
    • pork leg ham
    • When I was a kid, the 'pork' looked like braun (pigs head, ears etc). So as far as I was concerned the standard filling was the chicken option.

  • Master Roll - South Yarra

  • +1

This thread really needs to be state specific, otherwise it'll get out of control.

Sydneysider here. Marrickville Pork Roll is the king.

  • Dai Loi Bakery - Pakenham

  • I'm also a fan of Luke's bakery.

But the best banh mi I've ever had is from Good Days Hot Bread in Brunswick, VIC. The quality of ingredients and their flavours are just superb.
It's a little pricey as bahn mi goes, but it's worth it.
They also don't use pate, which might be a disqualifier for some, but even if you think a good banh mi needs pate, you should still try this place.

  • +1

Banh Mi NHU LAN in footscray near train station.you can see people on queue very very often

    • That's my regular joint!

  • +1

My man you need to go to Springvale. Bun Bun and Tabac are my go to places. Have never been disappointed. Although Tabac's quality isnt the same since the renovation.

    • their bread is superior to Bun Bun.

  • +1

Scott's Road Takeaway in Darra if you're in Brisbane.

Old school pork slices banh mi, cash only, ask for chili.

  • Le Vietnam, Perth CBD.

  • Used to drive daily to Mascot to pick up a banh mi from Hong Ha. It was good at $3.50 each. Today's pricing makes it less attractive.

One of the tastiest banh mi that I have had was at Saigon Chopsticks in The Entrance. The rest of the food was meh, but the banh mi was good!

    • Was it Hong Ha that had that 'incident' with the viral emailed photo that went around years ago? I remember the lunch queue was down the street….then it wasn't.

  • Red Centre Chinese Banh Mi

36 Todd St Shop 14C Alice Plaza Shopping Centre, Alice Springs NT 0870

  • Australia is getting ripped off, it's $1.50 from a lady with a food cart in Vietnam

    • Can not compare VN & Australia.food cart in Vietnam are not hygienic and may include toxic ingredient.

      • +2

        You spelt extra flavours wrong.

        • LOL….

    • By that logic you shouldn’t eat a Big Mac in in Australia because it’s $3 in Vietnam

  • Ask Greggo!

  • +1

Wrap and Roll on Furlong Rd Sunshine. I will die on this hill.

  • -1

Best I have ever had, and return to every year - https://maps.app.goo.gl/mxx4rKkpy2bu4yYFA

As for Brisbane - a few very good ones located at Inala Plaza.

Cambodia and Laos do great 'sandwiches' also. Slightly different but, I think, better.

  • -2

    Hong Ha mascot, end thread.

    • Tell me you are western without teling me you are western.

    • -1

      Hong Ha is overrated.

      • Ha Ha…

  • Apologies to the rest of the continent but its Let's Eat, West Perth.

  • -1

King's Hot Bread Bakery - Hurstville

  • -1

    Vinata Hot Bread - Cabramatta

    Discussion over.

  • top 3 for me

    top ryde
    jamison bakery Penrith
    marrickville pork roll

  • Only tend to eat these when looking for a nice lunch when in SA for work.

FYI, the Vietnamese family owned & run "Arndale Bakery" on the outside of the Arndale Shopping Centre is the go-to recommendation. Not only do they make all their own amazing banh-mi for under $8, they bake the banh-mi bread rolls for over 75 different restaurants and banh-mi shops across the Western & Northern suburbs, including every shop that sells banh-mi on Hanson Rd (Adelaide's "Little Vietnam") and all the Vietnamese places that have no menus in English around that area. Only downside is that there's a 30 meter long line at minimum every day from 12pm till 1pm.

  • Bibra Lake Lunch Bar in Perth - best in Perth I reckon.

  • 1 Bun Bun Springvale
    2 Tabac Springvale

  • Banh Mi Hoi An Richmond

  • If you've tried Lee Lee bakehouse in Richmond, have you tried Phuoc Thanh a few doors down

    I much prefer Phuoc Thanh?

  • +1

Bánh mỳ is a cheap quick meal in Vietnam. Vietnamese food have so many options that people in Vietnam only eat bánh mỳ when they don’t have time. The price of bánh mỳ has gotten ridiculous here. $9-10 for one is just too much.

    • Prices are no longer for Vietnamese demographics. The product has opened up and been assessed at $10.
Same with Vietnam, everything there will go up to as demand goes up. Thailand is a good example, use to be great value to travel 15 years ago - not so much now imo.

  • For something different, but still super delicious, lamb banh mi at Good Days Hot Bread in Brunswick. You will not regret it.

  • Prefer Phuoc Thanh over Lee Lee. And they take card.

    • Agree.

They only started taking cards a few years ago.

Bun Bun don't take card but I noted they accept PayID haha

  • The N Lee Bakery on Collins St might be better than the one in Collingwood, especially the crispy pork. They crump the crispy skin and sprinkle it over the banh mi so you get an even distribution of that crunch for the entire roll! U should definitely try the ones in Vietnam though, theres something about eating the food from its place of origin that make them that much better. Call it the vibe, the atmosphere, the weather, the altitude, the local ingredients, but you do taste the flavours thats its intented to have.

  • Best (most underrated) is TT Bakehouse in Springvale

Everyone goes to bun bun but it comes no where near close to TT.

They have superior bread where it’s glazed with butter (butter roll). If they run out their tiger roll is good too.

And they have superior pate. I have been to Lilys and it’s good because there’s a lot more meat. But TT is the most balanced

    • Are you talking about Tabac?

      • Nope that one’s worse than bun bun for me haha

        • I haven't had TT Bakehouse for 2 decades. Will give it a go again. You better not be wrong! haha

Tabac was pretty decent. I use to go once in a while if the line at BB was too long. I think Tabac changed owners and I wasn't happy last time I went.

          Will give TT another try.

          • @JimB: Same here I used to always go to BB but tried Tabac once and was quite impressed with quality. Will give TT a go next time I'm in the area.

            • @Craze: My 1st preference is BB but since instagram the queue is out of control.

Kudos they haven’t milked their prices.

But if the queue is too long I’ll head off to TB.

There’s a new one very close that also serves pho. Will give it and TT a go.

  • Anyone recommend something around Sydney South West Hurstville area?
Do you guys normally get the processed Pork meat, or Chicken? I see some stores doing Roasted Pork Belly as well now

    • Phu Cuong King's Hot Bread in Hurstville. I've only tried their regular Pork roll and Roast pork roll, both are great and generous fillings. Around lunch time, there is always a queue
      https://maps.app.goo.gl/bTq46ZHnY1yMuVTm6

      • Nice I'll check it out

  • I'm a little bummed out about Luke's Bakery. This have been my go to local for years as it's only a 5 min drive away. They've blown up massively in the last 12 months after going viral on social media. Always waiting 10-15 mins now and the quality has dropped slightly. They also put the price up, used to be only $8 (which was crazy cheap for what you're getting). They are still very, very good, but the consistency is sometimes hit and miss. You used to go and get a 10/10 roll every time, now once every couple of visits you'll get an 8/10 where the meat is barely warm and it's been hastily slapped together.

    • Same thing happened to Bun Bun.

    LOL….

Ok pigs are quite reproductive, seeing a litter of piglets is like another wonder of this world.
Now pigs are omnivorous and quite docile.
If you ever helped out on a pig farm then you will notice these animals actually do have a natural instinct of hygiene.
It is also possible to train them and do tricks.
Their noses are larger than the ones of dogs and their also better at detecting smells.

Compared to dogs in animal husbandry they do perhaps yield the most protein per dollar spent on farming cost.

Vietnamese had long known that it is actually healthier to eat dogs. So why gamble with health?

    • Are you sure that this is the discussion Vincent and Jules had?

    • +1

Fascinating.. Where do you find dog Bahn Mi in Victoria? Normally I'd get pork but I'd give it a go

  • +1 to Lai Bakery in Sunbury.

  • Sydney based fatty here.

Top Ryde Bakers - if you like crispy fried shallots in your banh mi, sure.
Marrickville Pork Roll - good if you like spring onion and pickled raddish. Its quite a large pork roll, so you get your moneys worth.
Viet Hoa Hot Bread (or anywhere you fancy in Cabramatta) - classic. Can't go wrong. I always get at least 2 to take home whenever I go to Cabra

I haven't been able to bring myself to try Destination roll as its a whopping $11 for 1 pork roll…

  • Ms. Banh Mi Bakery and Cafe in Forest Hill: crispy pork.

  • +1

My favourites in Melbourne (in no particular order):
    - Nhu Ngoc in Footscray
    - Nhu Lan in Footscray
    - To's Bakery in Footscray
    - An Banh Mi in Ivanhoe
    - Phuoc Thanh in Richmond
    - Fresh Chilli in St. Albans

    • You missed Springvale, how did you manage to omit Springvale?

    • Nhu Ngoc in Footscray

      Ngoc Ngoc…
      Nhu's there?

  • Gio Cha and Nyu Y Bahn Mi in Footscray are just around the corner from Nhu Lan and To's and because those two are known to be 'the main deal', they get overlooked; but I reckon they're as good or better. I rate their tofu roll as the best in Footscray.

  • Let's face it this thread is like asking Americans where's the best pasta place and them answering their favourite Mac n cheese shop. A bit cringe. As a white Aussie that visits Vietnam every year to see my expat dad I can tell you that our banh mi's are very different (like double the size and different toppings). They cater here more towards our western diet for our love of fats and sweets. While I enjoy both the banh mi's here and Vietnam I can hand on heart say I've never found any Pho as perfect as the good Pho shops in Vietnam. The good ones pluck their ingredients fresh out the back each day and have a beautiful authentic slow cooked broth. Usually found outside the big cities where they have room to grow their own ingredients. The locals have their pho early at breakfast and if you show up at 9am pretty much everyone is gone.

Why not follow the Vietnamese Banh Mi appreciation page on Facebook.
Photos are included there for your consideration.
    FYI.

the Vietnamese Banh Mi appreciation page on Facebook.

"RACISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE BAN(H MI)"

  • T&L bakery East Richmond - staff and food are phenomenal, easily best banhmi I've had, and I have tried a lot

  • Can someone do a Sydney City version, with prices also please if possible as I am a professional ozbargainer. Thank you.

  • As a Vietnamese who living in Springvale - Melbourne, there are 03 Banh Mi Shop I suggest:

    • Pork BBQ Banh Mi: Bun Bun Bakery - 1/288 Springvale Rd, Springvale VIC 3171

    • Meat Ball Banh Mi: 222 Bakery - 222 Springvale Rd, Springvale VIC 3171

    • Chicken Banh Mi: 166 Athol Rd, Springvale South VIC 3172

    • can't be lying with a name like Vo

    • I had to google 222 Bakery. I believe it's called Springvale Cake & Bread

When you say meat ball, do you mean nam nueng or siu mai?

  • The bread at Lily's Bakery is amazing. Besides that it was just average joe banh mi and over rated tbh. Prob get shot down for this comment haha

    • Have you tried Allegra just few doors down for comparison?

      • the day i lined up i was thinking about it as there was 0 people there. I probably will next time im down that way

      • drove past Scoresby today so thought id try out Allegra…
experience wasnt the greatest. Issue was the pate, butter/fat spread, vegies they used was COLD as, like almost frozen. So eating it was not great experience. The bread was just the usual stuff you would get nothing special or great. The pork was good though and so was the sauce… the hoisin mix and heaps of it which i like. The chilli was the pickled ground chili in vinegar which i like and it went surprisingly really well with it. I think if the stuff mentioned above wasnt so fn cold it would have been pretty decent But not still not as good as Lily for sure.
If Lily added more of that hoisin sauce mix maybe i would have rated it more just found it a bit bland. Lily bread is very memorable though and worth a try just for that

  • Hmmm how long is a piece of string….
    is Water Wet

    so many questions to ponder

Its Bum Mee so as long as you avoid any Place selling them in a CBD location or a Big Shopping Center Mall Food Court like Westfield you should be safe in terms of satisfaction ,

Just make sure you consume within 2 hours or keep refrigerated

  • VN Rolls Bakery and Cafe- Newcomb Victoria (Geelong)

Had some a few weeks back. Excellent.

    Pork only.

  • make it at home

  • Bánh Mì Huynh Hoa is by far the best I've ever had which is in Saigon.

Nothing in Australia has come close. I've been to half the places OP has listed.

And apparently Huynh Hoa is mid according to the locals lol.

Now living in Adelaide, I go to Miss Mai, simply because they pack the hell of the banh mi with crispy pork.

  • I won't accept this dissing of West End Vietnamese on Melbourne St in Brisvegas.

  • Me just happily seeing Alex N Rolls not being mentioned.

Love our ghetto local spot. Keep sending everybody to Marrickville Pork Roll!

  • Phuong 18 Bakery - Bankstown
new establishment, does pretty good rolls, I personally find its better than the other 3 around the bankstown area

  • Qld'er here. Try Little Linh in Hamilton if you are up here in Brisbane.

  • I've tried most of the popular chicken rolls in Sydney, and 100s of other bakeries.

The best one by far is the one in Cabramatta, not the late night one either.

Daily Delicious Bakery at Dutton Plaza.

Crispy bread, juicy chicken, 7$ a pop.

Reviews don't do it justice, most of the negative reviews are based on customer service. But taste is superb

Shop 8/8 Dutton Ln, Cabramatta NSW 2166

  • Roll Mi at the Telstra building on Exhibition ST

  • +1

best is very subjective - i hate the usual thigh/wing chicken they use. I know its an asian delicacy but I like white breast chicken only on my Banh mi
Therefore my favourite is Hurstville - King's Hot bread

  • +1

    phuoc thanh Richmond.

  • Bun Bun- Springvale

    Dai Loi- Pakenham

  • Ive been to Lilys (Scoresby) MANY times and it doesnt disappoint. Not sure i would be able to say its the best Ive ever had, but its super consistent and fairly well priced. Also going to shout out Syndal Bakery which is v.good too (lots of crackling!). One bug bear i have with too many rolls is the single, long, uncut piece of coriander and spring onion - human teeth werent designed to chomp through this and it always ends up coming out in one long piece! Cut it up people!!!

  • In Springvale, I'd recommend trying Bun Bun as it's very moist and saucy. Minh Duc is very favorable and the bread is usually very crunchy and warm as they re-heat the bread before serving. Tabac is also good that they use a lot more pickled vegetable and offer a different flavor pallet.

  • Banh mi yen, Da Nang

  • Have you tried Mr Truongs?

Always line out there, i personally don’t have a mouth for banh mie so I don’t even try…

  • Tiger bread in Flemington

  • @Sapper50, a little disappointed to see nothing listed in Queensland. Have you been to The Little Ky Son in Ashmore?
