What's wrong with the phone? Can you elaborate more for the sake of those planning to buy one (like me) Thanks!

    • No front facing camera was a deal braker for me as I use skype to talk to family a lot.

when skyping just hold up the phone whilst standingg in front of a mirror.

Windows phone, is limited in apps compared to iPhone and android.
      Locked to Telstra.

  • What are the options for Unlocking this (Cheapest)
    (eBay, Half Price Sims…??)

    • Interested aswell.

      • Currently on limited internet (Blocked), so I will look when home ;)

        • Too much personal internet usage at work there, eh? :)

        • Blocked as in 'Net Nanny' Style across the whole system.
But if I was blocked, it would be because of OzBargain :-)

  • The price for the 520 is quite common, a number of places (inc HN) have it for that price but unlocked.
The Nokia is probably a better phone too, unless you really, really need the LED flash of the 8S. Both phones are well built, but the Nokia comes with a better selection of apps, IMHO, especially GPS and City Lens.

  • 8S not allow to install Apps on external SD card.

That's all WP8 phones, not just the 8S

  • I bought this for my mom the first time I saw the deal.
But looking at the Nokia 520, that may be just as good or better.
The HDD on the Nokia is 8GB. The HTC 8S is 4GB.
Weight and battery are minimal difference.
Camera are both 5 Mega Pixel.
They are both Win Phone 8 so feature and functionality should be the same, aside from the Nokia Specific apps.
The Nokia GPS or Maps app, I have never used, but I imagine would be a comparable navigation app.
The other difference I noticed on the Harvey Norman page is:

The Nokia 520 lists these Network Types:
    GSM, HSDPA, WCDMA

The HTC 8S lists these Network Types:
    EDGE, GPRS, GSM, HSDPA, WCDMA

I do not know what impact this would have on the device connectivity.

I recon the Nokia 520 would be a good bet.

I did unlock the HTC 8S using an eBay purchase.
    Unlock any Telstra HTC Desire s x sv v xl 8s8x 4G Unlocking Code/Sim Network Key http://r.ebay.com/fnhdQa
    The seller was boyal_soondh.

It was easy enough to unlock and I actually did it in the Vodafone store when I went to get a micro sim card. haha.

Just heard from my Mum she bought a Lumia 520 for $159 at OfficeWorks (HarveyNorman Price match http://www.harveynorman.com.au/nokia-lumia-520-windows-8-pho…). It is $168 at HN for Cyan colour, but she was allowed to get black at OW

    • Wow HDD in a phone? You must hear the disk spinning all the time when you call people

    • LOL… I bought the 8s for my mum from last deal, but it only comes with English language and not changeable. The only language my mum could read is Chinese.. Shame it's a cheap phone comes with a large text.. Bought her another Lumia instead.

    Pass. Hanging for a cracking S3 deal…

I was at Telstra's site last night and the Lumia 520 was discounted to $159. At $159 the Lumia is definitely a better phone.

Internal memory is double the size (important factor) and Nokia exclusive apps seal the deal. You will get HERE Drive offline mapping in the HTC 8S as well, but there are extra apps you won't receive.

That said, it's an absolute bargain for $129, and the 520 may not be worth an extra $30-50 for someone who doesn't install a lot of apps (due to internal storage constraint).

    • Was the 520 for $159 a limited time thing? It's at $179 now

      • Yep, it has definitely risen to $179, I went to the same site in my history and it's $179 now. I should have posted it!

$159 was part of the 11% off deal telstra had over the weekend

Got this phone (htc windows 8s) in the telstra prepaid deal a couple of weeks ago - for my wife. She isn't interested in apps, just wants a basic phone which is capable of email and a little browsing.

She thinks it's great. HTC has good build quality, the screen is fine, and the windows interface is a cinch to use for basics and looks neat with the tiles.

Telstra last week released the 4" Huawei Y300 for $129 on prepaid http://dicksmith.com.au/product/EM5202/telstra-huawei-ascend… . Newer phone with better Android OS with very similar if not the same hardware. 'bagman' probably has a cheap unlock for it. A better deal imho.

    • Not a bad back up phone at all. Replaced my HTC 8X with this and quite happy with it so far. Little on the slow side but hey it's $129

    • In real world performance the HTC 8S is a better day to day phone than this one; it's quicker than the Huawei on the slower processor and Windows Phone 8 makes better use of the lower screen resolution than Android.

      • The biggest problem though is the 4gb rom. System files takes up 1.5gb already, so in reality you only have access to 2.5gb, which is hardly enough when you can't install apps on the sd card.

  • Is this in store as well?

  • I bought one in late may sale and it is not a good phone if you use any of the google service.
But if you are a hotmail / skydrive person, then it is not too bad at this price.
lucky i sold it straight away. price has drop again.
