    undeclared rep?

  • Thanx OP!!! I have been waiting for a price drop for months!!! I decided to buy this app a few months ago during the last price drop(with half price itunes cards) and the day i got the cards the same day the price went up again!

    • you are welcome)

About 2.5 from 34 reviews, to sure this is as good as it looks. Happy to be convinced otherwise…

    • +3

The new Google Maps on iOS is WAY more accurate.

      • +1

Yeah, after a quick look around this may be the cheapest available but I don't think it's worth purchasing. I recommend people look around before dropping the money down.

        • +1

Apologies mate, went to upvote your comment and the touch screen failed me.

I can't see why anyone would pay for technology that has not only been free for years, but where the free version is better. Having said that I can't understand why even in the country with the highest smartphone penetration people are still shelling out for dedicated gps units?

        • +2

Free spoken turn by turn has only really taken off on iOS in the past 10 months or so with Apple Maps replacing Google Maps which in turn forced Google into releasing their own standalone app. Prior to that the paid options few far more suitable than most alternatives out there. The tech has been there for years, but iOS was pretty slow to get any good options.

As for why people still buy them. Probably a few reasons including the convenience of not having to remove the unit from the car. Another, which is also tied to why people buy Tom Tom and other apps, is like many paid Apps a stand alone unit has absolutely zero data requirements. I'm not going to be mid way between two major cities and realise I need to pull up a map that I hadn't bothered to pre-cache and be stuck waiting for it to load over a crap connection or possibly find myself stuck with no connection at all. Personally, I find the lack of a data requirement adds a certain layer of robustness to a service, which is why I use a combination of Tom Tom and Google Maps depending on the situation.

Depending on the user, some people find the matte displays used on most dedicated units to be more suitable for preventing glare also than your typical capacitive touch screen phone. I tend to have no issue there, although I do mount my phone below the dash so it tends to not get too much light on it.

        • Couldnt agree more,I use the GPS in my android phone everyday as I am a professional driver.Metroview is the best GPS app in my opinion,it has house numbers on the maps…

        • 10 months surely should be enough time for people to be aware of the availability of the service on iOS, and data usage isn't really an issue as it's fairly small amounts and people usually have at least a Gb these days (at least people I know/deal services to). Also all the people that can't be bothered taking their GPS out, at least half of them hide it somewhere so their car doesn't get broken into which is more hassle than taking the phone which you already carry IMO.

I do agree that being able to have the entire map adds to the robustness, and as a professional driver I'd expect this. That was a selling point for my Lumia, however I would say that just like people are not buy electric cars because they want range, even though it's good for 98% of trips for the average person, people are just in fear that they will get stranded somewhere, and spending on a GPS device/paid app as some sort of insurance (although it's hard to argue with $15-20, I'm more whinging about people paying $300 on a GPS which I still see regularly in places like HN)

    • i'm a big Tomtom fan, I have tried many Gps devices and navigators on mobile phones(nokia, windows phones, htc mobile, and iphone/ipad) and for some reason i always go back to Tomtom(together with google maps which is free)
I agree with you though, it's probably not worth the expensive Australian full price but with this price drop and 1/2 price itunes cards I just couldn't resist :)

Been using this for last 2-3 years. Pretty good navigation out of all. Buy it.

  • Does anyone know the normal price for TomTom HD Traffic 12 Months' subscription?

    • $25.99

      • So the HD Traffic is not on special, right?

        • the main reason i bought Tomtom was to try the HD service. the service is not on special, and you don't get the first month trial either, but when you make a tomtom account it gives you a $20 coupon to use at Tomtom shop
Also, although you can install Tomtom on more ios devices without paying extra money(like every other ios app) it appears that the HD live traffic can be used in only one device. I just tried my iphone and ipad, activated HD traffic on he iphone and when i try to activate it on the ipad too by pressing "restore purchases" it asks me to transfer the account from another device(iphone) to my ipad. I was expecting this behaviour cause HD traffic needs an active connection to tomtom servers but i just wanted to confirm it

        • when you make a tomtom account it gives you a $20 coupon

I have set up 3 separate accounts for 3 separate devices in the past couple of months, and not one of them received the voucher (in spite of the website offering it, so don't count on it.

Dear but worth every cent - use this app nearly every day and have done since it came out

  • +2

I highly recommend the metroview app, the tomtom one may be a bit nicer to look at but I still think metroview is much better value.

  • +1

I use this and recommend it, although there are obviously other alternatives worth considering too. Personally I think it is worth the price. Google Maps is fantastic and I use that a fair amount also for looking up maps, but I tend to go with Tom Tom when it comes to in car navigation. Not sure why, probably habit from having used it for a few years (well before Google on iOS had spoken turn by tuen), as well as the lack of a data connection requirement being somewhat appealing for when I'm on the road.

    • +6

      It's Ozbargain, not Ozthief.

      • plus you cannot activate HD traffic on a JB tomtom.ipa ;)

      • -3

        Thief? Are you serious buddy?

        • +2

          Pretty sure that's thievery.

        • -3

          No it's not.
          You wanna arrest me buddy?
          Lets see you try. Dumbass

        • +2

It is stealing and I don't appreciate you calling me names.

        • there is a product which costs money, but you get it without paying…if this is not thievery then what is?

  • NavFree is good as well.

  • I've just purchased Metro View for IOS. Is TomTom better? MetroView is $15, way cheaper than this one. Past few months I've also used Google Maps as my GPS, but decided to buy a GPS that does not require 3G connection (MetroView) as there are some routes that might not have reception. And I've also read good feedbacks on the MetroView app.

    • I understand that recently Google enabled the offline access (read: downloading to sd)) of parts of maps, I haven't tried this but I'm rarely in an area that doesn't have data access. Either way it could be your solution?

      • MrBurns has an iOS not android, so he won't have offline access

    • "I've just purchased Metro View for IOS. …."

I got Metroview last year and I'm happy with it, especially the latest update which has made some nice UI changes. It's much cheaper than TomTom and it has a relatively cheap subscription to live traffic updates (something that Google maps won't give you). It can set destinations from in-app Google searches which TomTom won't give you.

Today I drove a Hyundai i30 with Navigation. Quite nice display and interface but I immediately missed the google search ability as well as the lack of Live Traffic monitoring (unless I haven't worked that out on the Hyundai system). I drove into a mega-roadworks on the M1 (Brisbane <—> Gold Coast) this evening and wasted a lot of time in the crawling traffic. I'm pretty sure that Metroview on my iPhone would have saved me from that.

      • I understand Google maps now gives live traffic as of a few days ago (android only at this stage).
Also, navigon (in case anyone asks) is map subscription based and has an awful UI.
If you have the money, I still reccomend TomTom for its speed (not safety) camera support as well as its nice UI. Overall, still the best package, but Google traffic (for free) is about to change that advantage, if its any good.

    WHY NOT MAKE IT FREE?

    • +7

Next week when you go in to work you should go and talk to your boss and tell him/her you still want to work for him/her but not get paid. Same thing.

    • "WHY NOT MAKE IT FREE?"

Really? Perhaps you meant that as a joke? That narrows it down to being a dumb joke, or a dumb question.

  • +1

Guys, has anybody tried Whereis app, it is available on both iOS and Android, it is free. Google maps in Australia is using Whereis maps only. Give it a shot…Cheers!!!

    • Are you sure Google is using the same whereis maps? i can see whereis in google earth but i'm sure there are differences in their maps, cause Tomtom Australia is powered by whereis too but the maps are different than the google ones

      • Hi,

I am not sure, my assumption is based on google earth maps only. Never used tomtom, so can't comment on that. I heard that the maps in Australia is maintained by Whereis.

    • Whereis is excellent for voice nav but I don't think it's Google maps. It's more like Tomtom uses Whereis maps.
