  • So far only sore point for me is the screen. Viewing angles are terrible but what can u expect for $169? I was viewining some pdfs and comics. It takes fractions of a second to render a photograph but thats not really a big deal. I actually like that its black as it looks more sophisticated as opposed to my Samsung note 8.0 which was $522. Its worth having as a spare tablet I suppose. Might just keep it for whenever my 5 year old nephew pops over as he is addicted to YouTube.

  • I agree. The screen is a bit ordinary. But the tablet feels pretty snappy.

Main issue so far is that I can't get google+ or hangouts to work. I get an error dialog saying:

"Google Play services, which some of your applications rely on, is not supported by your device. Please contact the manufacturer for assistance" :(

    • Can you install the Google Play by yourself?

      Actually 400g not too bad.

      • Google Play is installed & works after adding account.
Issue was with Google+ etc. Haven't checked as I don't use.
Raised in whirlpool thread (link below)

      • Tried upgrading google play manually by installing the com.android.vending apk. Complained that it was signed incorrectly and failed to install.

So, basically we have a tablet that can't do Google+, Hangouts, Youtube (properly) or Google Now and has other play store issues. Back to Aldi it goes… Shame…

        • That's the sad verdict on whirlpool thread. Another Aldi fail :(

  • Sounds tempting. Can anybody confirm availability of stock around Sydney CDB?

  • Bought one…will try it for 60days…the only problem is sound…very low but audible..but with Skype…unless u put the speaker next to ur ear..u can't hear anything…does sum one know how to increase Skype volume?

    Forum discussing this tablet http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2142051
Issues raised: poor volume, poor volume with Skype, Google+, failure to update Google apps due to issue when installed on ROM, etc.
Also that 10" quad core is selling in some Aldis for $20 less!

Without a solution to problem of updating installed apps, this tablet looks like a fail!

    • Discussion of rooting at that forum :-)

  • Skype is sort of a voice.over.internet.protocol, though. I suspect Medion mobile (now a dealer to Carrier. T $) might suggest you to buys a compliant plan produce - say 15.oo(365)P*AYG ?

Unfortunate hearing about the non ips panel tho. Would have meant a down grade for me from a starting aspect.. . ; but I suppose, u mix telco, you get boned.

  • I dont know what all the complaining is about. I bought one yesterday and have been having a blast with it. My 8 year old loves it, and she is forever playing on my outlaws iPads. I personaly hate Apple shit and would never have one myself so I thought at $169 I'd give it a go. I'm happy so far and still have 59 days of testing up my sleave. I didnt buy it to do much just log on to the net, get a few emails and generaly look stuff up on a bigger screen than my Phone and smaller than my laptop. If things change I'll update my comments on this forum. So far I'm happy.

As for the screen issues I dont really have any I increased the brightness and that made it much better to look at.

I have updated the instated apps brucefromaustralia. I just went into my google play account and updated them….maybe I got the only good one lol.

You updated FaceBook, Gmail, Maps, etc? Others report this fails.
The pre-installed apps are the ones that fail in updating.
(I can update other apps from my Google Play account, but these fail.)
Otherwise you are stuck with the ones installed on the Tablet, never to be updated!

YouTube won't show videos if you log in.
I am hating text editing on this tablet :-)

An easy test of the Tablet…
Try updating Google Maps, Gmail, etc… "PackageAustralia was not signed correctly. Uninstall the previous copy of the app and try again." But you can't uninstall an app from ROM!
If you don't see that message & apps update successfully, you are lucky & means there is more than 1 ROM version.

That is a serious fail for any computing device - not being able to update important softhware.

Best to give the unit a thorough testing before day 60, in case there are issues.

As I have complained in other forums, Aldi electronics mainly fit their intended users who do not push the technology or use the features they bought. They never see the issues because they never use them. On one Bauhn PVR I reviewed, timer recordings could not be set in certain circumstances. Users were unaware as they were mainly trading up from VCRs. Another Turned on/off if you turned on a fluro or CFL - Tempo Australia rep said this was normal operation !! Users thought they had made a mistake, rather than the firmware was poorly written. The manufacturer was unaware of the problem until I wrote about it.

      • Handy if others took the installed app upgrade test…

From Google Play, update Google Maps, FaceBook, or Gmail

FAIL if you get "Package was not signed correctly. Uninstall the previous copy of the app and try again."

If you don't see that message & apps update successfully, you are lucky & PASSED.

        Post if passed/failed.

Report your displeasure if it failed to
        [email protected]

Sorry about typos in my posts, I am finding pasting text unpredictable with this tablet, with text magically appearing in the strangest places :-)

        • No one else has tested updates of major loaded apps?
Would be good to get feedback as this is vital to future tablet use.

One email of complaint to manufacturer:

      To: '[email protected]'
Subject: ATTN David: Bauhn 8” Android Dual Core 3G Tablet – Model # HDC-08 Issues

      Good morning David,

Thank you for your time earlier on the phone.

      To Summarise:

      Yesterday (21/08/2013) , I purchased a Bauhn 8” Android Dual Core 3G Tablet – Model # HDC-08

I have discovered numerous issues that impede the functionality of the device, and ask that you and your colleagues escalate & investigate the following issues:

      1) Pre-installed apps cannot be updated

      • I have discovered (via the Google Play Store) that pre-installed apps (like Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, …) cannot be updated, despite updates available.
      • When one attempts to do so, the following error is reported: "Package file was not signed correctly. Uninstall the previous copy of the app and try again."
      • However, when one goes to Settings -> Apps -> All, there is no way the user can uninstall the app.

      2) App functionality impeded

(I suspect) due to the above fault, one cannot successfully utilise some of these apps. For example:

      • YouTube app

o When the user first starts this app, they are presented with a request to sign in with their Google credentials,
      o This process fails,
o This process causes all subsequent attempts to view a YouTube video to fail with the error: "Unsupported video format",
o The workaround is for the user to go into Settings -> Apps -> All -> YouTube and ‘Clear data’ & ‘Clear cache’, then open the app and ‘Cancel’ the request to choose an account,
o At a guess, this sounds like the user does not have permission to write to a directory due to the package signing issue.

I also suspect there are other apps that also suffer a loss of function due to lack of permissions.

Subsequent risk of Security & Performance issues.

      • Because these apps cannot be updated, the users credentials & data may be at risk, as newer versions of these core apps may have bug fixes that close known (and yet to be identified) security holes.
      • These bug fixes may also bring with them features and performance increases that current users are not able to take advantage of.

I invite you and your colleagues to visit this forum on the Whirlpool Australia site:

      /forum-replies.cfm?t=2142051&p=3

It is from page 3 of this thread that issues regarding the device become evident.

Thank you in advance for your help.

      • Na i will be returning this product its just become to painful to use. If my kids leave it on and and hour or so later i try to use it….well it has an almost flat battery…noy good enough IMO. As for the Updates Its stopped working and it wont let me do any of the updates. thank god for the 60 day Money back other wise I'd be throwing this at a sales assitant.

  • Hi guys, sorry just side track a little. Could anyone please tell me if this 8 inch Aldi tablet is better or the previous 10.1 inch Aldi tablet is better? In comparison between these two, could anyone please advise the differences if possible. Thank you very much!

  • Attn: Vodafone users:
Today I returned the device, while it acknowledged my vodafone sim was installed no matter what it could not find the network, although I'm on a 850 Mhz network according to voda's coverage map, Looking at vodafone support site my sim can operate on 850, 900. or 2100. so theoretically should work. but doesn't. Yes I tried both auto and manual selection to no avail.

Looking here http://www.accesscomms.com.au/reference/mobnet.htm I see the frequencies for both Wcdma and Hsdpa are the same as voda support suggested, tuned to my pocket wifi broadband with vodafone, I could browse the net dl from google play but never could make a call. Biggest fail in a phone hey? Other vodafone users please rate your experience.

    Shannon

    • Inserted Vodafone SIM. Connected (data & calls) in Brisbane location no problems.
Tested Telstra, Optus (Dodo), & Vodafone - all successful.
Tested OK with WiFi from phone, and successful as hotspot.

      • Thanks for that heads up, I'm up at Caboolture, Seriously I must've got the only one that was jacked. Even selecting vodafone wcdma or Vodafone gsm manually I just kept getting a msg cannot connect to the network try again later. this was many times in a few hr period putting the sim back in my Samsung phone … five bar signal and connectivity straight up. Go figure

Next week I'm off to buy a Galaxy Note instead and retire the Galaxy Nexus to a friend who has a 40 dollar phone :)

        • I have found quality control issues with Aldi / TempoAustralia electronics. UnIts from same carton can perform very differently. That's why I advised to buy 2 (or none!). For review purposes I used to test up to 3. TempoAustralia tracked me down from the reviews to work for them and test pre-production units, but supplying a single unit for assessment to improve quality control was ridiculous, so I declined. When you strike an issue, it is hard to know if it is the product design or that particular unit.

This is the first Aldi electronic device I have used since ceasing reviews - very unimpressed.

I checked your location (Qld) so thought the more local experience may help.
$40 phone - some people are living the high life :-) Mine is an OB $25 Huawei Android which is good enough.

  • Taking mine back tomorrow, only played with it for about 30 mins. The screen is crap if you are used to something better like a n7, I mean even my old nexus phone has a higher resolution. The playstore wouldn't let me install many apps, foxtel mobile wouldn't work for some reason either. I also forgot 4.11 doesn't have swipe typing either. My advice to people would be to buy something like a n7 and then use a phone as a wifi hotspot if you want data and phone calls. Worth the extra money, plus the battery life on this tablet is appalling.

  • Finally got 1 and i would say what you pay is what you get, the screen is slow to response and some of the apps are too slow to load and run. Overall its not a bad tablet for browsing. And yes 60 day money back is great too overall i would say its a good buy.

  • Another FAIL to add to the list…
GOOGLE CALENDAR app does not sync.

You can view the calendar via the Browser, but the app won't show your appointments, nor add new entries across your systems.

That's a popular app, so installing a version that does not share entries (& app cant be updated), but only acts as a personal appointments diary only on your tablet, is a major failure.

  • Noticed my local Aldi (Carindale Brissie) has
ONIX 7" for $70 (was $100) NOTHING FLASH!

    OBers reported returning units!!

    Bauhn 10" quad core 3G for $199 (was $249)

Accessories for 10" are $10, bluetooth Keyboard & stand for $15, tablet speaker & stand for $8 (for 7-10").
    Quite a few in stock.

    • Enjoying using the $15 "iPad" keyboard. (White of course)
Stand can be detached & securely holds tablet or smart phone. Data entry has been main issue with me when using tablets rather than PC. First use of keyboard for these devices - using with tablet & Android phone. Controls volume, turns on, etc.

  • Such build quality!
Micro USB socket has come loose inside tablet, making charging impossible. Back to Aldi.
