They aren't selling well so Dick Smith is probably clearing out all their stock and won't sell them anymore. The console is nowhere near finished its life cycle though.

you could have gotten the basic :) it just means you cant download games (due to less memory) unless you have an external HDD the rest of it is the same ….
it also has an sd card slot, so it's fairly cheap to (modestly) boost the storage.
Northland VIC had around 3 basics when i called up.
The best strategy is to get another retailer like EB games or JB to price match the console and get it on your 28degrees mastercard. The console could drop more in the next 6 months, and if DSE stops selling them, you can't claim the difference back if the price drops further. I got one price matched at EB Games as well

Yes but the Wii U is not in demand in stores. You'll be luck to break even on eBay. And will probably end up losing money (after fees, P&H, packaging, travel to PO, your time, etc).

Just got one from Jesmond NSW 2299. They have Basic and Premium still available.
Funny that they have moved all the Wii U still to the display window at the side of the store. But everything is listed at FULL PRICE lol.
For those who/will missed out, yes this is a great price now however only because it is "50% off.
Is this a "bargain"? Yes, but only when you compare it to the rrp.
I would actually say that $214 (32GB) / $174 (8GB) is fair value for what is essentially a last gen system.
I am confident there will be more firesales towards Xmas and into next year as it is not selling. Nintendo already announced an official price drop in NA and i'll bet there will be one in EU/AU towards Xmas. Heck the last DSE firesales attracted crowds and everything was sold out in minutes. This post is 10.5 hours old and there is still stock from the 5 DSE's I live around. If at 50% off and won't sell, every retailer in the country will be struggling to move stock.

That's your opinion!! DSE got rid of all the 3DS however other stores like EB and JB still stock it and are selling it at a normal price. Once DSE sold out I doubt you will be able to get a Wii U for 214$ again.
But how much longer will EB and JB, etc stock a console that is not selling? Inventory sitting on shelves/warehouses of retailers costs them lots of money.
With PS4 and XBONE coming out by Xmas they will need to make space for those too. Wii U stuff is going to get squeezed into the corner much like the PS Vita.
I wonder though how much they'll be able to drop (and the average joe will still be able to get stock). 50% off and was quite hard to find stock in most places.
Nintendo Australia have said they won't follow suit regarding the price drop for now. But they'll be crazy to think they won't need to.
I agree, it's fair to say that they'll be dropping more in the future, but I mean a the original Wii with Mario Kart + wheel is still priced at $149. A 6 year old console, so I think we grabbed a good deal for Smash and the new MK coming out soon. I was tempted to wait, but when I found out Top Ryde (NSW) had 1 more left I jumped hehe (maybe too impulse). Other Northen Sydney stores (North Sydney, Chatswood, etc) only had accessories.
Also with the DSE firesale iirc there was a big build up to it with social media and sale lists leaks. Whereas this was more of a spontaneous thing it seems.. just my 2 cents
Although maybe we can tell it wasn't a good deal this time because DSE staff weren't taking all the consoles for themselves before the store opened :P

Managed to get the last basic one after driving 30 minutes to Cranbourne. Also snagged a pro controller, although they literally only had 2 wii u games left for sale (AC3 and BLOPS2). Before that, I tried unsuccessfully to price match at EB, K-mart and Big W.
There is about 4 basics and 2-3 premium console left at brown plains qld :) was there 10 mins ago

Try your luck at chadstone kmart. Think the young male at the counter is an ozbargainer too. He will price match. Just bring a photo of the promotion in the herald dun, though he has the newspaper clipping set aside.
bought the last wii basic at hollywood plaza SA. at 530 came in at 5 to see if they had any left they had 3. went to car got wallet came back in they only had one left. didnt expect them to have any stock at all hence no wallet lol.

Bought a White Basic 8Gb Wii U from Dick Smith Albury for $174. I already had a premium and now I have a white gamepad as a spare which is probably cheaper than when they will retail separately. Plus I love white :)
Neither EBGames nor K-Mart would price match. K-Mart's excuse that "management will not allow the price match because Dick Smith are in front of the store" was very poor indeed.

Picked mine up from Mount Pleasant. Plenty of stock there. The store rep said that its the new permanent pricing for the Wii U. Not sure how reliable his source is..
The assistant at my DSE seemed to think they were clearing them out because "a new one is coming out soon".
Although for all I know he could actually be penpals with Shigeru Miyamoto.
I already have a Wii U premium — what would be a good reason to get a 2nd one on the cheap (basic or premium) apart from it being a round-about way of getting additional controllers?

I got my Premium today. Did everyone who go Premium got Nintendoland in their box? I don't have mine.
I think with the bundle it may be pre-loaded to the console storage, rather than the disc version, so just try turn it on and see if its in the menu.

I went back this morning and they were kind enough to give me a copy from the back. Funnily enough, Nintendoland is not in stock at the front.

I got the last Premium and it was a display unit behind the glass cabinet. I didn't mind as I was going to use this console and not resell it anyway.

Edit: Just called dse. They said my premium wii u order is shown as backorder and because it's discontinued I won't be getting it. I didn't cancel the order yet with a slim chance that they find one for me under a desk or something.

I ordered a basic console at 8:03am Adelaide time (order #1000687XX) and my order status still says Awaiting Fulfillment.
I did call them this morning though and after being disconnected 3 times finally spoke to someone who said it was waiting in their warehouse for a courier to collect. I'm still not all that confident though until I receive a shipping notification.

Mate managed to get BigW (Macarthur QLD)to price match, after much discussion. I had provided him with online chat transcript that said that the stores should price match since it meets their terms and conditions. Be persistent if you're instore, and make sure you can quote the BigW price match policy to them, because they don;t really have any 'valid' excuse to refuse :-)
For those who only managed to snag the basic one, my local EB games was selling pre-owned Nintendoland for only $24. Couple of other games at the same price but they weren't my cup of tea (scribblenauts and one other one). Might pay to pay them a visit and sift through the sale racks.

After nearly an hour of heated reasoning with the young sales guy and his manager at my local Big W.. Managed to get them to price match the premium bundle.
Actually had some random guy join in the dance of negotiation and produced scans/photos on his phone too, which was quite something.

Parkmore VIC BigW ended up pricematching at 4pm on Sunday. I went in there (the second time after being told not a chance the day before) expecting a heated argument all lined up with the pricematching policy in tow. Didnt need any of it in the end. The sales assistant spoke with the manager and was told fine. For those who didnt get one first time around - I know the sale is now over but it was pretty hit and miss all round - you may have grounds to still get it at the reduced price.
I've done it at top Ryde, Sydney. The guy made a phone call to confirm the deal is legit, then matched it for me. Still haven't opened it as unsure whether I want it or not.
People who didn't want to buy one but but one nevertheless, any regrets?

I was lucky because the guy at the checkout was a gamer and knew about the deal and was happy to help me out. Also, my friend works at EB Games so i'll be able to get Wind Waker HD for half price. :))
