AMEX: Bonus $25 When You Load up $100 on American Express GlobalTravel Card

60

I'm just rediscovering my amex card with all the deals posted recently and came across this one. I don't know much about these cards other than the blurb below. I imagine you'll get screwed a little bit on the exchange rate but not to the tune of $25.

AMEX blurb:
You'll receive a bonus AU$25 when you pick up a new American Express® GlobalTravel Card and load it with at least AU$100 in a single transaction. The bonus is applicable once, only to new GlobalTravel Cardmembers. Some limitations apply

Prepaid and reloadable, the GlobalTravel Card is the safe and secure way to carry your foreign currency abroad, locked in at a competitive exchange rate.

The GlobalTravel Card is easy to use, simply swipe and sign, or use at millions of ATMs overseas where American Express® Cards are accepted. You’ll also be pleased to know there are no monthly, annual or inactivity Card fees. See Terms and Conditions.

Pick up your Card at an American Express Foreign Exchange retail outlet in Australia now and mention promo code: "Bonus $25".

Offer available from 1 November to 31 December 2013.

Whilst it says there are no monthly, annual or inactivity Card fees, looking at the global card website there might be an initial loading fee of $15, but in the T&C of the offer there's no mention of this.

  • Can one load up this card and then withdraw the $125 gross locally? What sort of fees involved in this case?

    • You can only load foreign currency I reckon. So no.

  • I wonder if you could mitigate the exchange rate risk by just using the card locally?

  • i got one about a 1 year ago for free didnt have to pay the $15 fee. you cant use it in australia and i tried some overseas websites and it didnt accept it. can anyone confirm if its still free and you dont have to pay the $15 fee.?
