    • Damn! I should have come here before buying it!

  • Seems like the website is down ATM

    • website is up, just really unstable. You have to try a few times.

We underwent site maintenance last night, everything should be back to normal. This offer is extended until Friday due to site being down.

  • How much is a 6 cell for these? As the 6 cell model is $575 at MSY?

  • Do not buy this laptop , i own one and have had no good experience to speak of.

This externally looks better than all of the other netbooks , its when you turn it on and the fan doesnt stop ever that you notice the problem, and things do not improve check www.s10lenovo.com for more info

    My current issues are

    Random shutdown averages 30mins-6hours
    High pitch squel from fan
    Fan almost never stops

Yes i have the latest updates bios etc , yes this happens with xp and win 7

The servicing for this notebook is shocking mine was sent back and returned more than 1 week later with no problem found ( i am an ex IBM and Toshiba notebook tech)

i have been waiting 2 weeks for them to pick it up for the next service call

its really sad that a great looking notebook was so badly designed its worth the extra 50-100 to buy the MSI or ASUS

    i bought for 499 + 40 for 2gb mem

You got one bad one… Oh no! I am sure you are just unlucky… They wont all be faulty, the company would make money if it had to replace heaps of them!

      • Yes i got a bad one , unfortunately knowing the history makes it a bad design just ask one of the support people when you call ;) .

Def unlucky as there are some good ones out there (i'm sure there is) , actually if you do your research you will notice a great many faulty more than should be www.s10lenovo.com , but then hey you sound like you like paying 500 for a dud so go for it :)

And actually make money on a single model , can i have half of what your on ? who makes money on a single model , they get the cheap ones out there so people will pay money for decent hardware.

        • +1

They don't have models they don't make money on. Period. Unless it was a significant mile stone, and then yes they will lose money, but they will push their brand. This is just a run of the mill netbook. Its competitively priced, and i would rather have this than an Asus or Msi (HP aren't in this price range, but would def be the best). Lenovo is a better brand, well at least it has a better brand image IMO. Don't get me wrong, clearly you aren't satisfied, but i am sure there a customers from every laptop maker in the world who have problems with their machines and aren't satisfied. And not to be rude, but I don't class a forum as reliable research to be able say that their is a product quality control problem.

I don't work for Lenovo and this will be my first Lenovo and netbook (i am currently typing on a 15" Compaq laptop) and I really feel sorry for you having forked out hard earned cash on a faulty product.

BTW You can't have what i am smoking! ITS ALL MINE!!! jks.

@sickllama: Actually after working for IBM for a period i can tell you there has been more than one model made that has not made money.

I think lenovo is a better brand as it has retained much of its IBM ness and dont feel sore cause you bought one and your getting nervous , sure its a good one :) if not i'll help (i have the lenovo GM for apac email and he's happy to help)

I dont mean to complain and dont think i have (may be wrong)just stating the facts and my experiences to date

The forum link was for assistance for buyers can even get windows 7 help, nice

            • @Mikinoz: Thanks. I am honestly not nervous, topbuy is excellent. I wouldn't buy a computer online from anyone else. I am sure if I wanted to I could cancel the transaction now, or send it back before I open it. With those models that didn't make any money, that was because they were not meeting selling targets. I am guessing that this one is meeting targets, as it has been on the market for quite a while (8 or 9 months) and has new revised editions out.

Just a question, when did you purchase the computer and did it ship with Veriface and the instant on linux based app? I can't find an answer, because I know the s10e ships with it, but the s10 isn't widely sold anymore and didn't originally ship with that software, thus I am curious.

              • @sickllama: not sure about veriface and no on the splashtop/quickstart (linux app)

quickstart ,its a free download from the lenovo site but need to update bios to enable

Thanks for the heads up. Topbuy offers a 14 Day Money Back Guarantee so if your purchase doesn't do what it's supposed to or it's DOA (Dead on Arrival) you can get your money back.

We haven't heard anything bad about this product and we are sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Pricewise, looks like you got a great deal. We haven't been able to find a price matching $499, let alone $469 which we are offering.

We use tools like Shopbot, MyShopping, Get Price and Shop Ferret to compare prices, among other tools. The lowest we can find is in the $510's and that's without shipping.

      • No problem as an ex IBM Laptop tech i am happy to advise ozbargainers, personally i think its a great price for the hardware, Thats why i bought it.

dont know if would receommend the battery upgrade as it lasts for 2 hours and staring at a tiny screen for longer will make you need glasses (i think)

3 cell gets 2.5 in win 7 or 2.10 in win xp with browsing etc

www.s10lenovo.com has a wiki where it has all the specs upgrades battery life , options including all available batteries check it out before buying i did

    • You must have gotten a lemon then, I've used a few of these and they're all very well built units. The keyboard is great and it's quite slim too. I understand you're not saying any of these are issues, but overall I've found them to be good units.

As an ex-techie I'm sure you'd agree that no matter what brand or model, there's always going to be a bad one. You can spend thousands and still get lemons.

Anyway, +1 from me. Though I didn't like that survey recently with the string attached voucher..

      • Your not wrong its a great unit nice and small very responsive keyboard , great screen etc.

Totally agree with the ex tech thing, and you also may agree there is some lemon models made .

If you have used a few then you know about the fan on 90% of the time ? , how do you find it ? how long do you think a notebook that has extra heat will last ?

Still think its a great unit they just need to get a working bios and the service needs improvement

        • I certainly agree that a company can produce a whole series that is faulty, it's happened before and will happen again. However, the only reason I object is because I've sold these at work (electronics retailer) and our display unit was a pretty decent machine, definitely fan not spinning 90% of the time and barely audible, if at all.

Hopefully your replacement unit is a bit better, the units I've played with were fine, good luck.

          • @cyssero: thanks , being an owner of one is certainly been an experience :)

    Good deal I bought one!!

  • I advise that people not buy any laptop with only 3 cell. Its way to short battery life.

You will really appreciate the double battery life by just paying 80 dollars more.

    • Or you can just purchase the 6 cell battery and use either one or both. According to reviews, they were able to get about 2 hours out of the 3 cell.

Any current Ideapad S10 users out there can confirm that?

      • Does topbuy has the option to get extra memory and getting the 6 cell battery?

  • extra mem from www.arc.com.au or msy for approx 40 it will take 2gb memory even though it says only 1.5gb the machine will read 1.99gb

  • anyway to extend the warranty?

    • Yes just about anyone will sell the extended warranty approx 80 per year ie 189 for years 2 & 3

search for it from shoptbot or staticice.com.au

  • Is this different with the S10E as shown on this link?
    http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/Leno…

That model got 6 cells battery

    • it may be the education version less screen resolution (1024x576) and glossy screen , i prefer the gloss screen although the lower resolution can be bad for windows apps etc

the standard version has 1024x600 and matt screen 3 cell batt

  • Normally the 6 cell battery or even the 9 cell (yes its available) stick out like a dogs bum on this model , so make sure you are happy with the design ;)

  • Interestingly, it comes with Bluetooth. I didn't know the S10 came with Bluetooth. I thought only the S10e came with bluetooth. Please Clarify.

    • S10 definitely comes with Bluetooth.

      • thanks. I am getting this btw, and i need to know what issues this netbook has. I already know about the fan issue, which isn't a problem for me. Anything else i should look out for?

        • use the link above to the lenovo s10 forum lots of info user experiences lenovo feedback etc

          • @Mikinoz: i already read through. I just want to know problems, YOU face, cos seriously, the forum finds fault with just about everything. I just want to know, in general, what probs you all face.

(Side-note: This laptop is seriously selling out really fast)

            • @amkssg: besides the aforementioned its quite nice especially when you load quickstart and upgrade the mem

  • def comes with bluetooth

  • its actually a better model than s10e overall

  • item has sold out!!!

    • The consider yourself lucky !!

  • I actually wanted one and don't mind if it has 512MB ram and ubuntu. I agree that it's probably the better looking of the netbooks but even excluding Mikinoz's concern I still myself have read about the random fan issue.

    • i did the same myself when i read other peoples problems, only thing i feel comfortable with buying this laptop, is i actually am a laptop tech.

Have to say compared to all the others with the specs and price its the best deal around. Just hope you dont get one of the many lemons.

Please note it has 1gb ram 512mb on board and 512mb in slot

      • I appreciate your advice and your honesty in recognising it's a good deal so thanks. Perhaps RMA your netbook and see what Lenovo say? I'm still torn. I didn't want to spend more than 450 all up but if I can share the netbook around it might be a decent saving :)

        • No worries , luckily i have more than one notebook so rma is not necessary, once i have the problems sorted it will be a good notebook (prays)
at least the web support is exellent and the availability of drivers.

Why not buy a 2nd hand notebook off ebay i buy and sell them there all the time lots of great deals off people upgrading to netbooks :) (not self promoting).

Actually i am using one i just bought off ebay while the s10 is in service at the moment.

          • @Mikinoz: Yeah I don't mind a refurb but personally, I'm strictly after the S10 due to it's design which I absolutely love. The actual netbook itself holds it's value well so whenever I see them up for grabs on eBay it doesn't constitute much of a saving.
