Telstra Offers Free Assistance & Various Credits to Victims of Victoria's Bushfires

1340

Kudos to Telstra. There are thousands of people suffering right now and every cent will make a difference.

EDIT: For those that believe this isn't a deal, and belongs in the forums, I'll repeat what I said to jv…

This post is making a lot of affected people aware of Telstra's goodwill, which they most certainly would never know if it was posted in the forums. Offers of free calls, $500 credits etc is certainly a HUGE DEAL for them!

This is an announcement not a deal. Belongs in the forum.

It was acceptable then, and was also due to an emergency of one kind or the other???

Seems fairly straight forward reasoning to me.

        • +2

But its not a deal or a bargain is it?

        • -1

          No, it's not…

        • +4

Can you link me to any positive posts you have ever made, jv, my man?

I'm just curious if you ever have posted anything but criticism?

nb: Sarcasm is not included as a "positive" post.

          Troll on bruddah!

          I'm just curious

"60% off (some random item) at (some random store) in (some random city). Not sure if Aus wide" etc etc.

Half the deals on this site are ONLY for certain groups of people based on location etc.

This is a great offer and great deal to those affected.

And how many of these do you think are reading Ozbargain tonight?

        • +6

And how many of these do you think are reading Ozbargain tonight?

What, you don't reckon they have any friends, relatives etc that will tell them? Why the hell are you always so negative?

        • double

Why the hell are you always so negative?

          I can't recall when I last negged a deal ?

And how many of these do you think are reading Ozbargain tonight?

          Maybe 1?

          Who then tells their friend.

          Who tells his family.

          Who tells their neighbours.

          Pyramid scheme of life.

So if just 1 person is online, it's worth it, yes?

        • -1

as long as you don't call them, because this offer is only for people who have lost their service, remember….

        • +2

So according to your logic only deals which can guarantee to be read by likely takers should be posted? Deals are posted to alert others to something worthwhile which they may or may not be able to take advantage of. Nothing complicated about it.

        • Deals are posted to alert others

          This isn't a deal or a bargain though…

If it is, maybe you should post a deal about Centrelink payments, Childcare rebates etc. etc…

        • -1

Consult a dictionary. The number of ticks already given this deal/bargain/ should have told you something, but apparently not.

        • So no you can't? Does that…maybe tell you something…?

        • you can be negative without negging a deal. What a life lol

        • The fact a deal doesnt apply to everyone does not mean it is not a deal.
It is even a specifically listed reason to not neg a deal - which infers that a deal is a deal no matter how limited the audience.

        • It implies, we infer.

Although you are of course right mycosys: just because a deal doesn't apply to everyone is not a valid reason to neg a deal.

But that is not to say that a deal is a deal no matter how limited the audience. Targeted offers and single use bargains being two examples.

The positive votes would be a good starting point

How do you know that 'affected people' are voting for this deal ?

        • +4

How do you know they aren't? It's already been pointed out to you that news travels - which is news to you apparently and which in essence is the whole point of Ozbargain. Although you obviously think it's more about making an ass of yourself.

        • How do you know they aren't?

Somehow, that logic fails to prove your point…

        • As someone who seems to believe that "buying" intention equates to votes I'd say you're hardly in any position to talk about logic.

    • +3

Living a life of pointing out flaws and negatives in every situation is either fun for you or you are living in depression. I hope it's not affecting your family.

      • I think that people who log on and post, just to make personal remarks about other forum members are the ones with the serious issues… I hope it's not affecting your family.

Have you sought out some counselling?

      • -2

Got it in one. Likes to think of himself as the Ozbargain voice of reason but is more representative of the voice of largely irrelevant minutiae. The caravan of life and Ozbargain moves on, sometimes with but more often without him.

      • Let's not be silly here folks. Discussion about the merits of bargains benefits the community. Personal attacks and accusations about family destroy that sense of community.

    Kudos tightarse

Has anyone spotted a bargain recently for cheap shovels?

jv will need one soon, as he has almost worn out his current one, digging this hole deeper and deeper.

Thank you Telstra. Particularly as your deal does not run just for tonight, as jv seems to think.

    • -5

as your deal does not run just for tonight

you know it's not really a deal though…

Where did I say Telstra's attempt at more cheap publicity runs only for tonight ???

  • Not a deal, belongs in forums. By the same logic this is a deal: http://www.wildcats.com.au/article/id/1x0vownc7sefs1rkyd85ru…

There's a lot of arguing going on here about where this should be located and is this a deal and blah blah blah, but I just want to say: thank you. I have close family affected by two major fires that are still burning near Morwell and Powelltown (and friends in Gisborne). I don't search the forums here often (if at all! Only if I'm looking for something specific), but I do read the main page every day, just to see what's around. I've forwarded this info to my family members (who have been evacuated in both areas - I think the smaller spotfires around Morwell might have calmed down), because it can be incredibly stressful trying to contact everyone you'd want to let know that you are safe, and costly! It's one less thing to have to worry about.

So, you can sit and argue whether providing free assistance constitutes a freebie and what section of a website it should be posted on all you like, but I'm really glad I saw this and was able to forward it on :).
If you really feel like arguing about stuff like this at length is important, you are a very lucky person :) and I hope bigger problems never come your way. I know that sounds sarcastic, but I genuinely mean it!

Stay safe everyone. It's going to be a long, hot and windy summer. The Fire Ready app isn't perfect, but you can create watch zones around specific areas and receive notifications about fires near you. The CFA and Emergency website (emergency.vic.gov.au) are the once to check, and remember updates are provided through the day on ABC radio (which in Melbourne is 774 on the AM band).

Sorry, I should add: obviously that info in the last paragraph is Victoria-specific, make sure you familiarise yourself with the equivalent services in your area!

    • Here here. Well said.

It's a community scored. People discussing where things belong and giving opinions is one of OzBargain's most valuable features. And to be fair, where this type of post (taking a broad view) should be posted is an existing controversy.

Personally, I'm a big fan of TA's work but in this instance think that it's a forum post. It is not a sold product that is either discounted or free. It's a very targeted offer. I think it's great: good on Telstra and Optus. I hope a lot of affected people are able to take advantage of it. But it is not a bargain.

I also think the oft stated "publication" argument (I wouldn't have read the forums) is a dud. (Taken to an extreme to illustrate my point) Should we start posting news articles as bargains on the basis that people don't read the newspaper? My point being, that surely the only basis on which to decided whether a post belong on the deals page or in the forums is whether it is a bargain.

      • +1

….surely the only basis on which to decided whether a post belong on the deals page or in the forums is whether it is a bargain.

In that case the answer is quite clear. It was a bargain, and like many other bargains was available for a short time and to a limited demographic.

        • That's the argument that is made by people who think it is a bargain, and fair enough. The statement you so artfully highlighted Possumbly was in response to the publication argument.

As to the bargainworthiness. I respectfully disagree in this instance. While locality and membership are acknowledged exceptions to any prohibition on "limited demographic" posts, IMO victim of disaster is not. It's a target offer of something that is not buyable.

PS - To quote ">" without the quote marks.

          Sometimes italics just won't do.

Was for flood victims but passed through as a deal :)

    • That was a freebie though, for anyone… How many did you get ?

      • None i'm not from Brissy :P

    • Wow, amazing to read that now. Was a bit over a week before we got hit with the major flooding, looks like they did expect it to a certain extent.
