Some great deals, but buyer beware. Cell bikes are cheap made in china bikes. Components listed on their website may not be the same as what arrives when you buy the bike. I bough one of their mid-range mountain bikes last year, and it arrived with lower end components, and with cracked paint at the top of the head tube. Needless to day, I returned it. Like I said, some good deals, and the bikes are not terrible, just don't forget that you get what you pay for. If you want a cheap low end bike I would suggest buying from reid instead as you get 12 months free service (and based on what my friends have told me, this covers a lot of user inflicted damage as well).

    • thanks.. i was going to ask how are cell bikes compare to Reid bikes.. want to buy a read mountain bike.. thanks for the info dek52..

      • +1

Glad to help. I would say the quality of the bikes is comparable. It is just much easier with reid to go into the store for service (depending where you live)

I've ordered from cellbikes on a number of occasions. no issues (had slow delivery once - a week)
have heard a few people ordering bikes without issues

    • I agree, delivery is usually good. They use kind of an annoying courier who requires you to make an appointment if they miss you (and they always do). That said, items do arrive quickly.

Service is good but prices are redonkulous ($160 for a GXP BB - on sale apparently!). Still works out cheaper to buy from CRC or cyclingdeal.

    • +2

Am sure if you look hard enough, you can find examples of both "good" and "bad" deals.

    • +1

Isn't that for a SRAM Red Ceramic bearing BB? That's quite a good price - the Red on CRC is $213 AUD.

  • I'm after a bike stand so I can work on things a lot easier.
    These guys offer http://www.cellbikes.com.au/Bike-Accessories/Work-Stands-And…

Anyone have much experience or know of anything better value for money (or quality) than this one?

    • I have the Vulcan bike stand (exactly the same but off ebay for $55). It's a sturdy stand however I don't like the clamp. It doesn't grip flat top tubes nicely. You would have to modify the clamp with some sort of cardboard or foam inserts. It does clamp bikes with round top tubes better.

      • Ah that would be a problem for my bike.
        Thanks for the heads up.

      • I just re-read the description, it states "Adjustable clamp with soft jaws."

Can you turn it horizontally and grip the seat post instead of the frame?

        • *Vertically

  • I have this bike stand and can vouch for its sturdiness and workmanship. Origanally purchased from Aldi for $40 but now available on ebay for around $50 and cheaper than cellbikes:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l131…

    • I also have the Aldi bike stand and I agree they are pretty sturdy and has held up well in the 6 or 7 months I have owned it and I use it weekly.

  • I'd use Cell for components, but they aren't as competitive as they used to be with the rest of the aussie market reducing prices e.g. cyclingexpress.com and bikebug.com.au

I would AVOID their bikes, you might get a good one, but you might also get a bad one. I’ve had two friends buy from here before I could stop them. Both had problems with their purchases in regards to the geometry (rear wheel tight against the frame with anything other than a 23mm tyre) and quality (cracked seat junction wield after 1 year) of the Cell branded frames.

    • +2

Most road bikes don't have clearance for anything bigger than 23mm tyres. It's a stupid trend, but it's certainly not Cell bikes fault.

Cell's frames are almost certainly welded up at the same Taiwanese (or possibly Chinese) factories as many other mid-tier brands. If you pay Cell prices, rather than, say, GiantTrekSpecializedBMCFelt prices, you'll be getting the same frame, and be just as likely to get a defective frame. In any case, Cell have a lifetime warranty on their own-brand frames:
      http://site.cellbikes.com.au/help-centre-article?id=3

That said, if you want advice and after-sales support, buy from a proper local bike shop rather than on-line.
And if you do choose to buy on-line, it's often cheaper (and just as fast) to buy from one of the big UK shops as it is to buy from Cell.

      • Well, my experience with two (from two) of their bikes wasn't good. I'm friends with heaps of cyclists and no one on a GiantTrekSpecializedBMCFelt frame has ever had problems like these. The frame was soo tight that even the 23mm tyre rubbed into the seat tube on occasion. So it might be the same factory, but the quality control doesn't seem to be there for Cell frames.

        Frame (not components) quality score:
-Cell 2 duds from 2 friends.
-GiantTrekSpecializedBMCFelt 0 duds from numerous riders.

This is my experience. Individual results may vary

        • The only frame I've had a manufacturing defect on was a KHS.
That's one of the three big Taiwanese factories - Giant, KHS and Merida make most alloy frames for most other labels. It wasn't until the '90s that they took the leap of selling their own branded bikes rather than just being a contract manufacturer. Giant has done better than the others since then, but they're all seriously good at welding bits of metal together.
On my frame, the robot had laid a perfect line of weld right along beside the join… not actually on the join. Must have been badly calibrated that day. It was enough to tack the tubes together, but it wasn't strong. The weld cracked, I send the frame back to the local distributor and they sent me a new one.
If an operation as big as KHS can make that kind of defect on their own frame, they can make it on anyone's frame. They're few and far between though.

Does anyone have any good recommendations on any of their bike locks?

    • do they sell kryptonite? if so, get one with the D-lock and the 6-ft cable

      • +1

        cable locks not that good?

        • Not as strong. Depends if you are happy with the risk i.e. where you're locking it up and how long, and the value of the bike.

        • +3

if you're riding anything worth more than around 2k you probably shouldn't be locking it up on a bike stand anyway

IMHO cable locks win out, enough to deter anyone that hasn't come prepared and it's light enough that it shouldn't weigh you down

For the first reason above, I don't ride "nice" bikes to run errands. It's like driving a Ferrari down to the local shops, you can't stop the trolleys coming in :D (people stealing bikes, if they're determined) so you better be driving/riding the cheap ride when it happens

        • There are some articles out there with candid interviews with bike thieves. They use heavy-duty wire cutters or cheap cordless drills to skip past cable and chain locks. The most difficulty are the kryptonite u-locks. The other big issue is cyclists not knowing how to lock the frame and front tyre through a closed, fixed bar.

        • would 48 inch U locks be ok for mountain bikes? or do you need 411.5 inch..

  • Do these guys still sell the cell branded bibshorts ? . I bought a pair for less than $20 a couple of years ago and they are still going quite comfortably .

  • I can't comment on their bikes coz I haven't ordered one.

But I have placed two orders with them and they seemed to be good to deal with. I had a problem with the GPS monitor I bought from them - and they processed my refund pretty quickly.

    Delivery-wise … they are ok

I would support aussie sellers like cellbikes when they offer competitive prices - esp they have to pay GST while the overseas sellers don't
