Offer available from 22 June

16GB iPhone now only $59 per month.
Free phone when connecting for 24 months.
Includes 700 MB data per month.
Great deal as previously needed $99 cap to be free.

UPDATE: The new iPhone 3GS pricing is available for Optus. The 16GB 3GS will be $8 extra per month on a 24 month plan ($192) extra, so either go with the 'older' model now, or pay $8 extra per month.

  • Is that good in comparison to other companies?

note that the 700mb included data cannot be used for tethering (officilly) unless you change the APN

This model is superseded as of this Friday, it won't be long till you see 3GS only apps, seeems silly to buy this to me.

O and pricing for 3GS on Optus is out tomorrow.

    • Apple have sold 15 million iPhone 3G's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IPhone_sales_per_quarter.s…

Do you seriously think there'll be 3GS only apps any times soon? Unlikely.

      • -1

Yes, certainly in the game genre.

      • I love how people (and Apple) love to trot out this figure…
Nokia sells this many phones every month. Not every 2 years :-)

And I esp love how Apple says how "successful" the 3G iPhone was compared to the 1st gen. How it took a year to sell "x" million, and the second year was that figure x10. Of course they forget to mention that the first gen was USA only, and the 3G is worldwide… they like to leave that part out. But that's most of what Apple marketing is about. half truths, and lies presented as ironclad fact.
        (end rant)

I've been a 1st gen iPhone user and owner since August 2007. OVer that 2 years, it's ht eonly device I've ever owned that's got BETTER with age. More features, performance etc… And am VERY much looking fwd to upgrading to 3GS shortly. The apps are what make this device. The same as the add-ons for Firefox make that the browser of choice. Everyone can have thier own iPhone that does (mostly) what they want.

Now lets just hope the Australian carriers don't screw it up (too) much come Friday.

This is a good point. They are the old model.

    • +1

Iphone 3G users are able to update their iphone firmware to 3.0 which basically will allow them to run all applications the 3GS will. The only difference though, will be that the 3GS will be faster (due to faster processor) and support apps that utilize the new hardware features of the 3GS such as the compass, which to me really is not worth paying the extra money.

    • Why would developers want to build applications for the 1% of iPhone users with a 3G S? Just like when the iPhone 3G came out, applications were mostly compatible with the original iPhone. There are also very few hardware changes between the iPhone 3G and S, so I don't even know how developers would benefit, apart from the obvious video recording, compass and voice recognition capabilities, by making their new apps 3GS only.

  • +1

dont buy this, optus are trying to clear their crappy stock before the new model comes out in a few days.

wait it out, the new ones are meant to be exactly the same price as the old ones.

    32gb is same price as 16gb. :)

    • Can I have 'source' with that?

    • +1

I guess 32GB will be the same price as the regular price, which is $99 per month.

      I can't see you buying a 32GB iphone next week for $59 a month, $0 upfront :D

      • +1

I agree, if you only need to spend $59 a month, and dont need the extra little features the 3GS brings with it, such as double processor speeds, compass, better camera, then this is a great deal

  • I agree

  • I dont see this as a good deal especially considering this info:
    http://www.mactalk.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/img0503…
this is rumoured to be the new Optus pricing for when the Iphone 3Gs is released this coming week.
Looks like you can get the newer model free on a $59 cap with 500mb data. Thats 200mb less data than this deal but you also get the brand new model of the phone

    • don't know how authentic these "rumored" pricing schemes are (coming from a photo of a word file), but those handset charges are quite phenomenal none-the-less:

$26/month over 12 months for the 8gb model on the 19 cap
$54/month over 12 months for the 16gb model on the 19 cap
$65/month over 12 months for the 32gb model on the 19 cap

I mean, I realise they're low-value caps considering the value of the phone but $41/month for the 32gb on the 79 cap is pretty crazy

      • They are all over 12months… $19 cap x 12months = $228. The $999 to cover the cost of the phone has to come from somewhere…

Even the $79cap x 12months = $948 and they need to make some profit/cover costs of providing the service…

You really can't expect to get a $0 phone on a 1year contract. Especially a high end expensive smartphone.

    • Looks like the rumored Optus pricing was dodgy. Actual: https://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=tru…

  • +1

    i took a look at the link… and it only has a $79/month deal….. where's this $59/month deal???

EDIT: sorry just noticed the post mentioning "the website should be updated June 22"

I understand that the new one is coming out in 4 days, so i'm sure we'll see a few more similar deals, however i don't think anything will be much cheaper than this… let's wait and see hmm

IF ALL OF YOUR HAVE NOT REALISED….IPHONE 3G APPS WORK ON THE IPHONE 3GS?
    —-END OF STORY—-

    • But not the other way around. Buying this will eventually limit ur apps down the track, how far down the track? Well that depends on the developers, but 24 months is a bloody long time when your starting out with dated tech.

      • +1

Depends what sort of apps you are after most likely. Given the big hardware improvements were the camera, faster CPU, more RAM and the compass then you can probably in some way guess if the sort of things you want to use will work in the future or not. Games and CPU intensive apps I can see being an issue but for other sort of apps that won't need the CPU, RAM or Compass I'm sure you will be fine.

It's not like THAT MUCH changed under the hood really.

Free on the $45 plan on Virgin

https://www.virginmobile.com.au/shop/p-395-apple-iphone-16-g… - Click the "Yes Cap" button at the bottom and theres a small chart on the next page that has the $45 option

Only has 50megs of data but you can add data plans on for extra. In any event it's another option and you will be on the Optus network still.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1224467 - Convo regarding the plan

    • Hi Smigit, It seems I have taken your deal and posted it, sorry I did not look here first!

  • +1

I'm not going to vote this negative but I don't particularly see this as being a good deal on the discontinued model… if you're going to commit yourself to a 24 month contract why not pay a little bit extra to get the latest model in a few days time? There will be apps that specifically require the 3G S soon enough, and considering the not insignificant speed improvements, video recording and upgraded camera, and compass (plenty of cool apps will use this down the track), you might regret your choice to go with the older model a few months from now.

  • My 2 cents view, don't get an outdated model when the new one is coming out in less than a week! It is a great deal (as I got mine right at the beginning and I have a phone repayment of $9 every month till July 2010). But I did enjoy the iPhone alot (the games are awesome!).
But like what everyone is saying, this iPhone is gonna be obselete soon, as the new one is coming out June 24th! Look out!

  • the $100 credit when signing up online makes this a little more attractive but personally i wouldn't get the old model.

  • -2

Logged in just to vote this deal down. Optus dodgy practices has turned this 5 year customer away to 3

    • -1

that is not a reason for a negative vote, that's just your point of view…

with that being said, theoretically you would still vote negative if the iphone was free on the $29 cap.

      • -3

A vote is a point of view Mr. Ayatollah.

      • I agree with che0173…I've personally had a dreadful experience with the 3 network this past year, but it's not like others don't have a good experience with xx company and could benefit from the bargain. (Aren't we voting for the bargain, not the company? XD)

I have no idea how iphones are priced and would rather go for a cheaper plan, anyway, so..:P

        • So would you, based on your experience, recommend 3 to someone (+ vote) or not (- vote).
Let those others who've had a good experience vote positive and we'll see what the final result shows.
With an ongoing contract the company is the bargain.

          • @bargainhunter: I wouldn't vote at all. :P I had a bad experience with 3 only in the last half a year or so of my contract, and personally Optus is nothing to write home about either (but this was a problem more with their phone and service centre than with the network), but other people have had perfectly-good experiences.

  • My "stupid" sister just replaced her lost phone with an iPhone from an Optus store.
Had to get it today as it was "very important".
So I yelled at her for not waiting to get the newer model, let alone wait 1 day to get a 16GB version instead of the 8GB she now has.

It's not my money being spent on an obsolete model iPhone.

  • Plus the Virgin deal posted just recently is much better and cheaper.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/13890

  • Included mobile data is only 50meg, though. $10 more per month gets you 350mb total, which, while $59, is still not as high as 700meg..on the other hand, it -is- available now. :)

  • I seriously don't get this place.
This gets nine negative votes, but the same phone on Virgin (with only 50MB data) gets 12 positive!
    Weird.

    • I voted negative on the Virgin plan… I think it's just a bad a deal as this one. :)

  • Virgin and Optus are one and the same, don't bother with either.

  • Gizmodo forum says this about the new 3GS model pricing on optus, which seems better than the above.
    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/06/optus-iphone-3gs-pricing-r…

    24-month $99/month 'Timeless' contract
    1.5GB internet quota, tethering allowed.
Note: must pay $15.00/month 'internet pack', but it gets reimbursed for the whole contract duration.

    • Again, not sure whether $99 per month is a 'bargain'

      • true, thus it is just a footnote of this post.
but still, free tethering and a significantly larger internet quota is quite good.
i'd wait for vodafone/three just incase, though.

  • how can this a bargain?

  • No bargain for Optus! Esp the Tethering Charge!

What a joke to ask customer to pay $9.99 extra a month to use iphone as a modem?! Most Phone esp 3G was designed to be used for high speed internet and use the phone as a date modem. It is part of the function in the phone!

Now Optus want to charge extra for the "service"?

What's next? Optus start charging iPhone user for retrieving Voicemail because they are iPhone user so Optus can rip them off?

    http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,25654989-5…

OPTUS has confirmed it will charge customers who wish to use Apple's iPhone as a tethered modem to access the internet.

From next Monday, Optus post-paid customers will be able to use the iPhone as a modem to connect a laptop to the internet, but will be charged a monthly access fee of $9.99.

  • Was the $49 Optus plan a few weeks ago better?

    • That was an 8GB iphone
