  • Great find, even if the new one is coming out.. $45/m for 16GB iPhone is a good deal. Extra $5/m gets you more data allowance, only 50MB included in the $45/m.

  • I wonder when 3GS going to hit the stores… or at least when are those stores going to release the plan prices

    • Rumours were Optus will release theirs tomorrow, I imagine this week at least.

Personally I wouldn't touch Optus 3G with a 24 foot pole after witnessing a friend's excruciating inner city experience with the Optus data network.

However for those interested - iPhone 3GS plan preview:

Where does your friend work? I get 2Mb/s here in Melbourne CBD and surroundings.

          • -1

@jashjash: This is within the Melbourne CBD and inner city surrounds. Try using Optus 3G near Richmond railway station. Chapel street. It is not about the data rate - it is the dropouts, where you will use it and then you'll just lose the data connection. Dropouts & 'blackspots' rather than achieving maximum throughput is his concern. Not just one - but two iPhone owners I know who are very unhappy with Optus's data network blackspots in the inner Melbourne area.

@00: Yeah that happens, it's definitely not the most reliable network, especially when moving about, so it's upto the individuals needs really.

Work provides me with a Telstra NextG card, and it allows me to do work while moving. But for web browsing and facebooking, I find the Optus network good enough.

            • -1

@00: Yeah, Optus don't seem too good :(
I personally use Three, works fine. I'm often browsing the internet while on the tram or train, and it works pretty well. There's only two blackspots I've noticed.
              - On Swanston Street outside Melbourne Uni. I often catch the route 1 and 8 trams and for some reason it ALWAYS drops out there
              - At Flinders Street station, just as the train is leaving the station. Once it gets nearish to the first station it's fine

It drops out while going around the city loop, but that's assumed (I think everyone does :P)

    not tomorrow, friday
my friend owns a store he says friday, i went into one of westfield's optus stores and they said friday too

    • -1

I hope the pricing won't be ridiculus and they're going to allow mms and teethering

      • +3

And no stupid extra cost for tethering, i.e. Optus.

  • -1

well, i guess they are trying to dispose of the old iPhones before Friday.. :D

By the time you add data it is more expensive than Optus for $59 per month: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/13881

  • +1

Not a bargain. This deal is just as bad as the Optus plan linked to previously, and an iPhone without a data plan pretty much misses the point. Voting negative to restore some balance, considering that the Optus plan was so heavily voted down.

If you’re going to commit yourself to a lengthy 24 month contract why not pay a little bit extra to get the latest model in a few days time? There will be apps that specifically require the 3G S soon enough, and considering the not insignificant speed improvements, video recording and upgraded camera, and compass (plenty of cool apps will use this down the track), I think there's a fair chance many might regret going with the older model a few months from now.

Virgin has actually been very good with the iPhone deal, in my experience.

    • You can exit from the contract after 6 months. The only thing you pay is the rest of the iPhone. e.g. 3/4 of the rest of the iPhone, because a quarter (6/24 months) has been paid off.

    • Even though the iPhone is locked to Optus network, after 12 months, it is free to unlock. ($80 to unlock if less than 12 months)

    • Cap amount can be used to call overseas.

    • Even though it's $45, there is 50Mb included. Further data pack can be purchased, personally I chose $10 for 300Mb because my usage doesn't go over 200Mb a month.

    • Tethering is free. It has been enabled with no charge on my Virgin iPhone already.

    • Online viewing of call and internet usage is free and easy.

    • And also UNLIMITED FREE calls & text 24/7 Virgin to Virgin. When the rest of your family is with Virgin, this is VERY handy. No need to wait until 8pm at night, or the weekends to make free calls. You're not even limited to the first 20 mins.

I'll admit, the plan and the company isn't for everyone, but it's definitely a bargain if you've been waiting to pick one up, and aren't planning to be on the bleeding edge of technology all the time.

I agree with juicedpixels and jump22. This is not a bargain.

Ohh and for those that have said that the 16GB is outdated because the 3GS is out in a week (more so in the optus promotion that here but still). Keep in mind they are still selling the 8 3G which doesn't have the speed improvements of the GS so while a newer model is out I'm sure people will be developing with the 3G in mind for some time to come. If you want the faster GS then no problem, but I wouldn't be too concerned about this being obsolete, especially when the 8GB 3G is still being sold.

edit: If youre into games then I think the GS is a good choice still mind. For things like messaging clients but I'm sure the CPU gains won't make or break anything.

Are these $99 iPhone's ever going to hit Australia?

    • -1

there are no $99 iPhones. Thats the upfront cost of it on a contract in the US so it's $99US + The monthly fee which I believe on T&T was something like $79 a month.

Coincidentally when you look at it our plans aren't that bad in comparison really. We don't get the unlimited data yes but you could get say this $45 plan and add a pretty damn decent amount of data to it and still be under the US monthly spend. You'd also have a 16GB 3G instead of an 8GB.
