FREE Access to >2500 Australian+Overseas Newspapers & Magazines via Public Library PressDisplay

930

as per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/115020#comment-1569632 but now includes magazines :)

87 magazines and 13 newspapers added for April join the 50+ magazines from Future Publishing last month which included T3, Mollie Makes, Cycling Plus, Procycling, Your Family Tree, Total Film, Photography Week, Fast Car and Xbox: The Official Magazine.

Unfortunately, this free access is still unavailable via the PressDisplay/PressReader app outside libraries, unlike Zinio with its iOS and Android apps :(

Also, Library Edition remains required for The Age or Sydney Morning Herald as Fairfax geo-blocks access to them via PressDisplay.

I have used this everyday since it was first posted. Bloody brilliant it is.

I just type in any random 8 digit number except 12345678 as the card number.

    • +5

Yes, because my Library card number is 12345678

      • +3

thats the combination on my luggage!

    • Deleted - too dumb!

  • So, is that go to the deal link, then add the real email address? Then just add 8 digit number?

  • +1

thanks OP worked for me with # 45665321

    • +3

Amazing! That's the combination on my luggage!

      • +1

        Better change that!

        • +1

yeah the leopard print is so 1982.

By the way, it is not possible to see anything other than the first page of the SMH, even with State Library membership. It seems SMH stopped access this year for library members if you are trying to access from Australia. I tried using Hulu, as some Ozbargainers suggested, and while it did work, it slowed down the computer so much I had to delete it.

    • Using Hulu to access the SMH?

      • +1

        I think he means Hola?

        • Haha … ok … got it :-) Was really confused for a moment …

    • Not true, I can view the SMH with my state library of Victoria membership

    • By the way, it is not possible to see anything other than the first page of the SMH, even with State Library membership.

Library Edition remains required for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald as Fairfax geo-blocks access to them via PressDisplay.

  • Also, thanks OP worked for me too.

  • how to use full screen mode to read newspapers?

  • Nice work op!
However am I the only one who can't move page to page. I.e. I get in load up a paper then have to tap on it (on an iPad) to expand it, then minimise the page again, move to next page then maximise that and so on?
    Kind of annoying :-/

    • I thought it doesn't work correctly on mobile devices.

      • Dammit i wish it would work proparly on a tablet… such a good site with free access :)

        • It works just fine on iPhone & iPad. It's clunky, yes, and glitchy, but it still works.

        • yeah it works but you can't just slide and go to the next page on full screen view (ie. you tap to bring the page up in full screen, then make it go back to small view, then tap next page to get full screen etc)… kinda annoying :/ unless i'm doing something wrong?

        • I totally agree. But it still works, which is why I posted what I wrote above.

  • Our system has determined that the computer network you are using is located in or routed through Australia.

As per publisher request The Age is not available for viewing in your area.

We invite you to contact the publisher of The Age and insist that The Age be made available for viewing on this service.

The SMH seems to work fine with just a regular library membership.
Maybe Fairfax decided that one copy of The SMAge on PressDisplay was enough?

  • Re: State library of Victoria membership
    I am in NSW,can I get membership ?
Does the SMH also include Sun Herald?

  • Thanks, tonester

  • Full page view? A little clunky but free….

Can I suggest that Australian residents apply for a National Library of Australia card at:

    http://www.nla.gov.au/getalibrarycard/

Pressdisplay seems to work as described above. As do the region blocks unfortunately (or who cares, just bypass the paywalls on the newspaper sites).

    http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/item/4307

Homesick migrants can check if familiar papers are available e.g. The Star (Malaysia) or The Straits Times (Singapore, usually has a paywall), Washington Post etc. The international selection is amazing.

I used Google Chrome in "incognito" mode. installed Hola and AdBlock Plus as addon. It worked for me! There are no restriction, whatsoever. I can read everything, absolutely everything. Hope this helps.

  • This is great - is there a setting so you can read the newspapers in HD and not zoom in on each page to read it tho i have a decent widescreen monitor and still have to zoom in to read any artice. Zinio you can read pages as they display easily.

  • Does this include the magazine called 'APC'? I can't find it…

    Someone please PM me!
