  • Nice but no HDMI?

    • yeah

      • Damn. Anyone know where to get a cheap component cable? Some charging even more for this DVD player!

  • gee Im old, I remember when you couldnt even buy an ACTUAL DVD MOVIE for less than the price of this player. But then again, I remember when I thought Betamax was going to win the VHS Vs. Betmax wars. Dont even start me on the Commodore 64.

    • +1

betamax was better than vhs but vhs was cheaper - thats why they won.
Funny thing is this round with BD and HD-DVD, BD was more expensive but they won.
Ultimatley though they both lose to dvd because hardly anyone is adopting the new tech :)

I remember when the abacus first came out and thinking to myself: "This thing is far too complicated and is never, ever going to catch on while we still have fingers and toes!"

But then, I said the same thing about scratch marks on clay tablets.

Don't even start me on cave paintings.

    • Dont even start me on the Commodore 64.
… let alone the Commodore '95 Acclaim.

    Will definitely pick this up.

  • Anyone want to hazard a guess about if this might be region free?

  • Not sure about quality but damn cheap!
    No ALDI in SA :(

  • +1

Pretty much any cheapo DVD player is region-free or you can find cheatcodes on the Net to be entered into your remote to disable region locking. Region codes are dead.

  • I will buy two, Thx for Info

  • It's not region free, but there is a very quick fix to it. Check out Whirlpool.

  • nice!
    does it have USB input?

  • +2

    I was sold at "Divx".
Hopefully this doesnt sell out straight away.

    • Yeah,, it was DivX in the catalogue description that got my attention ITFP.
I'll try to remember to phone Aldi tomorrow to get some confirmation of the I/O interfaces.
USB input would be GREAT, but for $30,, I'm not holding my breath…

BTW, this Video Help search engine is very interesting, but didn't help me narrow down this particular model.

  • "ALDI product of the week"

yeah that's probably how long it will last!

    • +1

I've still got a DVD player from Aldi that's over 3 years old and still going good. The only thing it can't do properly is stereo audio (the down mixing from 5.1 DVDs doesn't work as it should), otherwise its still good.

  • +1

OK,, Aldi advise that it has:
    * s-video out
    * component video out
    * digital optical & co-axial audio out
(I was a little concerned that it'd use a SCART interface, but fortunately not.)
It is distributed (to Aldi) by Tempo Australia P/L Ph:1300 88 66 49 mailto:[email protected].
The model number is purportedly "AC-DVD51", although I've not yet found any reference on the magic inter-web.

I'm waiting for an email reply from Tempo to see what more I can discover and I'll update this comment accordingly.

  • Hi
Anyone know any DVD player with UBS can read protable Hard disk and play AVI and RMVB file? I bought a highlander DVX5850 with HDMI and USB port, The USB can read AVI file not RMVB also can read USB flash drive not protable hard drive. Very close to my need. Thanks

  • Does anyone know if this will play xvid files?

  • +1

OK, the (brief) reply from Liz White at Tempo Australia P/L Frenchs Forest NSW confirms that this unit does NOT have USB input:
    No USB
    1 x component
    1 x RCA
    1 x S Video
    1 x Optical
    5.1

    I hope that helps.

Man for $29.95 I honestly don't expect USB input. What a bargain!! I bought my last DVD player from aldi (with divx) at $99 which was a bargain then and its still working greatg after about 4 years or so! :-)

The great thing about aldi is not only the amazing price but the emphasis on good quality. German efficiency? ;-P

  • Great !! I'm definitely get one tomorrow to replace my dying zensonic unit.

  • Dealsdirect have a similar "highlander" DVD player and you can pay with CR card no surcharge + free shipping (some posts earlier) for the same price, also div X supported, non region coded and multilingual + inclusion of AV cables, 1 yr warranty, all for < $30, i've ordered that instead saves me the drive to Aldi

  • fatboyslim… why don't you post that is own ozbargain?

    • +1

A good match. It only seems to be "missing" digital/5.1 audio outputs by comparison.
Bonus of not having to drive to Aldi to purchase V return to Aldi in the case of problems/warranty/dissatisfaction.
      \_/7

      • Is the 5.1 from Aldi going to be effective or so-so?

If not, I am thinking to go with the one from DealsDirect since they are doing free shipping :)

        • The best info' I've been able to get from Aldi and their Tevion Distributors is that it has digital audio output and 5.1 audio.
Now you'd presume that to mean that it has both an internal 5.1 decoder with 6 RCA audio outputs (or just use 2 for stereo as per normal) PLUS Sony/Philips digital/optical (S/PDIF) for connection to a receiver/amp' with its own decoder.
The proof I suppose will be in the seeing tomorrow by those who go to Aldi…

          Edit - confirmed by Bernhard below - 6 x RCA for 5.1 , + optical & co-axial digital audio outputs.

  • I'm a little confused on 5.1 audio for these DVD players.. Does that mean it has three 3.5mm ports on the back or does it mean it has heaps of RCA ports?

  • So, did anyone pick one up at Aldi today? How's it?

  • +1

Sister picked one up, doesn't display DivX on the actual DVD player, but it plays them (or at least it plays Xvid, it just says MP4 when they play).

    • how is the 5.1 working?

      • +2

Haven't played with that, according to the manual though: "Built -in Dolby digital decoder, with output of 5.1 sound tracks.
Also as per the manual, these are the output cable thingos, exactly as in the manual:
        1. Audio front Out(left)
        2. Audio front Out(right)
        3. Bass Out
        4. Component Video Out (YCbCr)
        5. Complex video Out
        6. Surround sound Out(right)
        7. Surround sound Out(left)
        8. Centre speaker Out
        9. Left speaker Out
        10. Right speaker Out
        11. Digial coaxial Out
        12. S video Out
        13. Digital Optical Out

        Hope this helps.

    • Yeah mine didn't mention Divx either - in the manual, box, or on the player.

Tried out some random videos. Don't really know what the different types of xvid or divx codecs mean, or if they make any difference, but if it helps anyone?
I got the codec info from GSpot

      Worked:
SRT subtitles, XviD ISO MPEG-4, XviD 1.0.0, XviD 1.1.2 Final, XviD Dev ver. 25-Mar-03, DivX 5.0.5, DivX 5.2.1

      Didn't Work:
SUB/IDX subtitles, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, 720p Xvid (only tried one file)

I also haven't tried surround sound - I don't have the right cables for that.

A couple of other things I've noticed (Note: I may be wrong - haven't checked the manual very well ;))
      - no sleep timer that I could find, but does have an auto screen saver.
      - remote needs to be pointed almost directly at the player.
      - the on screen display doesn't automatically turn off when playing a video file, but can be turned off manually easy enough with two presses of the OSD button.
      - it doesn't show folders by default (at least for video file discs and discs with both video and mp3 - haven't tried a disc with only mp3s), pressing PROG shows the folders.

Overall I'm pretty happy with it so far, and definitely can't complain for $30.

Subtitle files were my biggest worry prior to buying it, but the SRT files seem to work no problem.

  • Complex video Out? I guess it's composite.

    • Sounds pretty complex to me…

  • Well, I need a new budget player to replace a busted one in the bedroom, so am gonna try my luck at Chatswood Aldi now…

  • Remote is very weak, otherwise a fine unit for the price.

  • My local Aldi still have 5 pallets of them @ mid-afternoon today,, and yes,, unlike the photo in the Aldi ad', the player does not have the divx legend on the front panel nor is it stated anywhere on the box. I was able to verify all the previously mentioned A/V connections on the rear panel + it does include an A/V cable.

I went down to Aldi today to see if they still have them, they had these Tevion ones similiar to the picture, but with no DivX logo or any mention of DivX compatibility in the manual, an Aldi staff member told me he was positive they could, but he couldn't be 100% sure and told me I could return it if I didn't.
But it turns out they do, I tried several movies and they all worked.

So for the people who aren't sure if the ones without the DivX logo can play DivX, you can be sure they can now!
