Thought this was a good price and worth sharing.

If you want the lightest and most comfortable sleeping mat for your next outdoor adventure then look no further than the Exped SynMat UL 7 Sleeping Mat series. Coming in at just 460g these are some of the lightest mats on the market. When compared with the SynMat 7 series, the SynMat UL 7 series has a lighter outer fabric and does not have a built in pump - instead a FlatValve system is located at the end of the mat and the user inflates the mat by blowing into a one way valve. These minor changes in materials and design save a massive 400g. To help retain body heat on cold nights the SynMat UL is filled with synthetic insulation. The insulation is bonded to the top and bottom fabric ensuring it lofts as soon as the mat is inflated. The SynMat UL has been design to keep you warm to temperatures as low as -4°C. One of the most impressive features of the SynMat UL 7 series is its small size when packed - just 24cm x 9.5cm. This compact mat has one numerous awards and is perfect for a light weight overnight day adventure.

Ultra light weight at 460g
Wide mouth FlatValve ensures fast inflation and simple deflation.
Similar to a sleeping bag, baffles between the mats‘ chambers eliminate cold spots and promote a stable and supportive air cushion.
The laminated polyester fabric is airtight. Each seam and valve is high frequency welded to ensure mat integrity.
For use with a pillow, 2 loops at head end can be used to secure the packsack to the mat.
Light and warm: The Synmat UL M is about half the weight and packed size of a standard 2.5 cm self inflating mat - with a heat resistance value of 3.1 compared with 2.5 for a standard self inflating mat.
Included: Stuff sack, fabric patches and textile glue.

  • Is this similar to a inflatable mat, but stuffed with down or synthetic insulation inside?

    • +3

Similar. Synthetic fill inside, bonded to the mat interior, so it expands out as the mat is inflated.

These are a really great mat. After years tossing-n-turning on thin mats I bought a couple of these about 6 weeks ago. Best mat I've ever slept on. Really light, and roll up tiny. I'm 184cm tall, and the Long/Wide size is great for me.

They are inflatable but not self-inflating - you'll want to buy one of the various types of pumpbag or pillow pump. Inflation by mouth is possible but not recommended (moisture from your breath can settle inside the mat)

      • Question - is the 7cm thickness true? How much of the 7cm's is fill vs air?

Like you im tiring of thinner UL hiking mats, but not really keen on a 7cm rolling air ride.

        • I have their Downmat 7 and 7cm is true. The baffling is great and stops that waterbed feel of rolling around.

          Most comfortable mat I've owned.

Synmat is smaller and lighter but also less durable, depends what you need.

        • @Roscoe99: 100% agree with all that - it's truly 7cm thick. I'm a side sleeper, and for the first time ever my hips & shoulders don't rest on the ground, as with my old Thermarest Prolite.

A mate just came back from 3 months cycle touring in Europe, on a Synmat UL all the way. One of the internal baffles gave way halfway through the trip. He emailed back to Aus (I think it was Summit Gear), who contacted Exped HQ, who organised a replacement mat in the middle of France. Service ++

Be aware though that Exped UL mats come with a shorter warranty than their non-UL ones. For an occasional user like myself, and given their relative cheapness, I'm OK with that.

          @guyvb:

Damn, that's good service! Happy to pay a premium for a quality product when the company looks after you on a warranty claim

I bought the ExPed Down series for $200 each, I know they're not the same mat but they are amazing! ExPeds rock!

  • Better off with a NeoAir Xtherm. Higher R value, lighter, smaller, and Therm-a-rest have a better reputation for replacing pads (read bushwalkers forums).

The only problem is you won't find many good deals locally on NeoAirs, but I think most people on OZB are pretty used to this by now ;D

    • Yeah I considered the NeoAir Xtherm's too although they are pricey. I have heard if you look after the Expeds carefully you will get many years from them.

Sea to Summit - local Australian company/importer is bringing out a range of mats soon, pretty excited to see what they have to offer since I lent my mat out to a friend and it now deflates after 2 hours.

  • Unfortunately shipping isn't free and will be >$10 for most customers. The "standard prices" for most retailers are: S: $129.95, M: $149.95 & LW: $169.95 with many offering free shipping over $100, so this deal doesn't necessarily represent the best saving. The best I could find was S: $119.95 & M: $139.95 with free shipping at http://www.outdooradventuregear.com.au/exped-synmat-ultralite-7/.
