Windows 7 Pro/Win XP/Vista and More for US$19 for Students

311

So if anyone is interested in getting access to the MSDNAA website this is the cheapest route. You get two copies of Windows 7, plus all the other software available. Posted below.

  • I'll keep this thread updated with more information if users post.

SlickDeals user Wikipost posted this (all credit should go to him):

ACM signup provides SIX licenses (4 English, 2 Chinese, users are reporting that they are interchangeable).

you can join ACM for $ 19 for a 1year membership with MSDN AA software access (same software)

Thanks to versusqc:
Use this form and get a free calculator (while supplies last):
https://campus.acm.org/public/QJStuW...m_type=Student

http://campus.acm.org/public/quickjoin/interim.cfm —- original student membership form —- $ 19

  • sign up and ACM will send you log-in information
  • then you will have to wait till ACM lets you opt-in for MSDNAA membership —- it will take approx. 1 to 2 days —- to check if you can "opt-in", log in to "MyACM" and under the "My Services" tab you will find a light blue box saying "Access ACM’s Student Academic Initiative (SAI) Programs: Developer Academic Alliance (formerly MSDN AA), Sun Academic Initiative, and CA Academic Initiative" —- click on "Developer Academic Alliance" link in this box and if ACM has already processed your payment, you will be able to "opt-in" (however, you do not have to wait for the payment processed email ACM will sent you)
  • once you "opt-in", MSDNAA will send you their log-in info within 24 hours (check your junk mail folder - my email was buried in junk)
  • once you got your MSDNAA login info, you will be able to log-in here https://msdn01.e-academy.com/elms/Se...spx?campus=ACM and download your software

Once you have your credentials for the MSDNAA website here are the steps to download Win7 (thanks to edifonzo):
Quote:
1. Log on to MSDNAA (find the acm.org link, lazy basterd)
2. Find the following programs: Windows 7 (x86) English, Windows 7 (x86) French, Windows 7 (x64) English, Windows 7 (x64) French.
3. Add them to your shopping basket.
4. Head to checkout.
5. It will say something like "click on software for more info", click on "download", it will not start downloading but will take you to another page.
6. Copy key, past to notepad. SAVE

  1. Repeat for other programs.

USERS REPORTING THE MSDN AA EMAILS GOING TO THEIR SPAM/TRASH BOXES SO CHECK THERE!

FAQ:
Quote:
Q. Can students keep these tools after they graduate?
A. Yes, this license is perpetual and nontransferable. You don’t have to uninstall the tools, but the stipulation of “academic use only” does not change. From MSDN AA Website (thanks to: i6s1)

Q: How long does it take to receive the log-on details?
A: 1-2 days.

Q: Do you have to be a student to signup?
A: They started asking for student information (Sep 9,2009)
Quote:
In order to take advantage of ACM's Student Academic Initiative (SAI) Program, you must verify your student status by providing ACM with the following information:

  • The name of your Faculty Advisor
  • Your Student Identification Number

Please click on 'My Student Profile' and complete all the required fields.
Q: How many Windows 7 licenses do you get?
A: Six… two (Eng/Fre)for the x86 and two (Eng/Fre) for x64. On Sep 9,2009 they added another 2 chinese keys, but should work with English nonetheless. But users are reporting that the keys are interchangeable.

Q: Where's Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint? Will they be available?
A: Probably not.

Q: OMG THEY HAVE WIN7 ULTIMATE! Why is everyone downloading the Pro?
A: Win7 Ultimate is a Release Candidate, meaning a beta. MSDN AA has never posted the ultimate retail.

Q: Should I install 32bit or 64bit Windows 7?
A: If you have a 64bit CPU and more than 4GB RAM then you should definately use the 64bit, otherwise 32bit might be a better choice. Read this article for more infomation: LINK.
Note that you cannot upgrade MS Vista to Windows 7 Professional, you will need to do a clean/fresh install.
There is a solution that can be found at the bottom of the 3rd post.

    good post

  • again, student only

  • this has already been covered in the comments for the other cheap W7 post:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/15849

  • Nice, what's the catch?

    • students only! It's a real bargain if you're a student. Some IT students can already get it free through their uni, though.

      • yep! that's me :D

        • What uni is that? :p

          • @jordanface: I can as well :D
Swinburne University in Melbourne. A lot of other universities have MSDNAA access as well.

  • A few questions: How do they know whether i'm a student? So it's 19 USD for 1 year access, after that win7 becomes unusable right?

    • How do they know whether i’m a student?
They will ask u the name of ur school adviser and ur student ID,
So it’s 19 USD for 1 year access, after that win7 becomes unusable right?
No,ur membership to ACM is only valid for 1 year, but the windows license is perpetual.

      • ACM will ask you to verify your student status. I just got an email from ACM after about 2-3 weeks since signing up.
They will ask for your faculty advisor, their contact details, and also your student ID.

btw the way, isn't this deal a duplicate? i swear i've found the same info in another win 7 deal somewhere on this site

        • Yeah, you're right, this was posted about a month ago IIRC, but IMHO I also reckon it's worth a re-post with all the people snapping up cheap laptops all over the joint! ;)

          • @StewBalls: cheap laptops? explain…. :)

            • @joequimby: There was a sweet ASUS & fairly decent Samsung at COTD recently, and the one at Aldi; plus the few others that have been fair value floating around! there were some questions about upgrades to Win7 with these. ;)

  • How does this stack up against the other student offers for win7 that have been posted up recently?

  • Comparison chart for those interested in the differences between Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate.

    • It's a bit out-of-date, the 3-app limit for W7 Starter was removed 3.5 months ago.

word of caution to people who signing up and are not students:
Am an engineering student and have already updated my details.

As part of our student offerings, we created the Student Academic Initiative (SAI) whereby we offer Student Members access to software that is made available through selected vendors. Currently, Microsoft, Sun, and CA make software available to Student Members.

It is important for ACM to verify that the individuals taking advantage of the ACM Student Academic Initiative are indeed students. Therefore, we are asking you to provide us with the information below by Friday, Sept. 25th.

    • The Name of Your Faculty Advisor
    • Your Student Identification Number

Log in at https://www.myACM.org with your ACM Web Account username and password and follow the link "My Student Profile" to provide us with this information.

Once we have verified this information, we will send you an email with your login credentials for the ACM Student Academic Initiative (SAI) in approximately 1 week.

Thank you for your help in this matter!

  • Do you have to be an engineering/maths student, or any kind? ie. Arts student, Law student..

    • no, business students will do

  • Wasn't this posed a few days ago?

  • Confirming that the french keys work on english install and that x86/64 are interchangable :)

btw, if you can get into the IEEE, their msdn-aa server has x86 and x64 copies of Win 7 pro in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. That's 10 interchangable licenses xD

  • I don't understand this. Can someone explain for me please?

If I wanted to upgrade my 7 computers in the house to Windows7 is this deal any good? Since Windows7 isn't officially out yet. There is a student in the house so we can legitimately buy the licenses I just don't understand how we can buy something not released yet…

    Thanks in advance.

    • it's not released to the general public, but it has been released to technet/MSDN subscribers. The general public get it a bit later to give OEMs time to customize their builds.

      • Thanks for the quick reply. So does this mean it is the final release that the public can buy in October? I'd be interested in the Professional version so Ultimate doesn't bother me.

        • yes, it is the final release that the public can buy in oct. microsoft alwasy release their products to technet/MSDN subscribers earlier than public.
ur student in the house can use the windows products through ACM, but u cant (legitimately). the keys are non-transferable.

    Student of Life count?

  • if i sign up for one year does that mean i have microsoft for only the 1 year? or does the license last for ever?

  • hey, just wondering once you install Windows 7 Pro with the cd key? Will you be able to use the same cd key again when reformatting??

    • Yes, as long as it's the same computer.

  • Isn't the MSDNAA rates only available to students studying IT degrees?'

    From microsoft's website:

    1. What is the MSDN Academic Alliance?
The MSDN Academic Alliance is an annual membership program designed especially for academic labs, faculty, and students in the higher education curriculum areas of Computer Science, Engineering, and Information Systems

I'm a business student and would love a copy of cheap windows 7 but if this is some sort of aloop hole to get around the system then I'm not too sure abou it

  • Hi all, quick question - the $19 student subscription version specifies:

"Includes an electronic subscription to Crossroads and CACM. The Digital Library cannot be added. Available to High School and undergraduate students only."

Have any graduate students successfully subscribed to this version, or will i have to choose the $42 option?

  • Hey, I just registered with ACM before… When I finished entering my credit card details and click next. It led me to a blank page? So I thought, my browser screwed up and registered again, but still did the same thing. Is there a confirmation page after entering the credit card details or am I done?

    • same here. don't know what happened.

  • i just cant belive this. 6 copies for only 17 bucks, i think will be cheaper than the pirate one from China.
and what if i buy these and sell them to others?

    • That would be illegal, as the terms and conditions state the software is only to be used by you, and only while you are a student.

You aren't buying any software. You are buying a subscription to the ACM, which, if you are a qualifying student, allows you access to microsofts MSDN-AA service.

MSDN-AA is free if you are studying Comp-Sci/IT units at uni/tafe (and your tafe is a participating member which most are).

  • Hmmm all i need now is a cheap way to become a student so i can take advantage of this deal :S

    • TAFE is your friend! (I suspect this includes OTEN, but check it out 1st) ;)

  • i'm a uni student and i'm glade to give give away this opportunity to others coz i'll not use it anyway.

    • Read MetalPhreak's comment above. You'd be in breach of the conditions.

    • That would be illegal, as Microsoft are only giving this opportunity to students only..

  • I just registered and paid 19dollar
    http://campus.acm.org/public/quickjoin/interim.cfm

    and i got online receipe

But where i can find my log info (account name and password)

    thx in advance

  • Dear Students,

Due to a large influx of NON-computing (IT) students joining ACM just to get a copy of Windows 7 Final Release, it had to be taken out of the Microsoft Developer Academic Alliance package offered to ACM Student Members. Windows 7 Beta remains among a LOT of other software.

The Developer Academic Alliance is supposed to be JUST FOR COMPUTING-TYPE STUDENTS. Microsoft offers another package, Dream Spark, for those non-computing students.

I encourage you to check out ACM Student Membership for "real" since we really do offer a great bargain — free e-mentoring, free software from other companies, the digital edition to Communications of the ACM, Crossroads Magazine, etc., etc.

    Have a look: http://www.acm.org/membership/panel?pageIndex=2

  • Devastated.

I AM an IT student and was about to sign up.

Anyone know any other companies doing something simlar, or know if RMIT have access to the program?

    • Same here…

    • RMIT is part of the MSDNAA.
"RMIT MSDN shop relocated to Building 8 Level 3 (right next door to the RMIT Fitness centre)"

  • I signed up. Got my MSDN Account. Im with NMIT

    • Where the hell is my windows 7 download!? I can't find it…It was there 2 minutes, i saw it before lol

      • See above (ACM Membership's comment).

Due to a large influx of NON-computing (IT) students joining ACM just to get a copy of Windows 7 Final Release, it had to be taken out of the Microsoft Developer Academic Alliance package offered to ACM Student Members.

  • Hang on, so what can we do? I signed up legitimately (I'm a Uni student in the fields they described) to get windows 7. Now it's gone, I have no need for this membership. So did I just waste my membership fee?

  • Who should we refer to as the "faculty advisor"? The head of computing school? or course coordinator? or ..?

  • I just got my login details, but I can't find Windows 7 Beta.

Do you reckon Windows 7 will come back when it released publicly?

  • Mods should mark this expired…

  • This is rubbish. What a waste. I'm going to request a refund.

  • Anyone know where I can download a copy of the 32bit Windows 7? I've got my keys, but haven't download the software..

  • how would you go about requesting a refund?

  • Good luck.. the US doesn't seem to have as strong consumer protection laws.
And you did pay for membership, not Windows 7.

    • oh well, doesnt matter i guess if they refuse to make a refund.. life is tough move on :) 20 dollars wont make you poorer :)

  • Hey Everyone, I am a college intern in the Microsoft Marketing department and wanted to clarify a few things for you. First off, ACM and IEEE will no longer be offering Window's 7 through their MSDN AA membership. There was too much abuse from non-technical students taking advantage of the offer. That being said, Microsoft has made it very easy for students to get Windows 7 today at a deeply discounted price (just $29.99).

For students who are not enrolled in a technical program on campus or without access to MSDN AA head over to http://www.win741.com/ and click on the Buy box. You can access the Professional Upgrade by clicking the link next to "Need to join your school's network domain" at the bottom of the page with the big Windows 7 Home Premium boxshot. (this is the place where you select between the 32-bit and 64-bit version)

For those of you who are enrolled in a technical program on campus, check with your campus administrator to see if your college or university is an MSDN AA subscriber (most are). With access to MSDNAA you can download Windows 7 along with a lot of other great Microsoft software for free.

If you are still debating if Windows 7 is right for you, check out this great post on the value of Windows 7 for students: http://www.crn.com/software/220001070

Let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification.
