  • Rather chromecast and netflix ove this lol.
i know about the other stuff this thing does and still don't think that makes it worth the extra $150 over chromevast.

    • Other stuff?

      • +1

        recording shows for example.

    • +1

      Apples and oranges…

This is a PVR with online streaming and media centre capabilities.
Chromecast is just a wireless display extender.

      • +1

chromecast streams mate you didnt think it simply uses your wifi network to stream from whatever device your useing did you?
your phone or tablet is merely a remote of sorts.
yet you can also cast your nexus device screen but thats not it's main purpose.

you can get more content on chromecast be it netflix Hulu presto youtube or whatever else.

    • Total minimum cost is $5 per month. This price will not change for a minimum period of at least 24 months from the date you first activate your Fetch TV box. The Fetch TV box will not operate at all without a current subscription to the Fetch TV Starter Pack.
    • +1

Yeah, this is REALLY important to recognise…
This thing also NEEDS an internet connection to boot up!
If your internet is down, no TV for you, even though it could still receive transmission from the antenna.

I helped someone set one up and couldn't believe how useless it was!
What a Rip off! FetchTV starter pack ONLY gives you access to Free to Air TV and Pay per View movies. The Pay per View are no cheaper than anywhere else, so what are you paying subscription for?

Looking through the PayTV Channels that are available on higher plans, they look like the dregs of Foxtel..
Probably the only attractive option for some people might be the World Channel Package, but that's a pretty niche market.

    • The $5 per month subscription does get you 30 free movies per month. The free movie selection includes a lot of outdated movies, but they rotating every couple of weeks there is always at least one movie worth watching.

For example, this week they have "About Schmidt" starring Jack Nicholson. It's a decent movie. I think I saw the Shawshank Redemption on there a few weeks prior.

Importantly, Fetch TV is an Australia company and they are trying to provide a decent Foxtel alternative… so they are worth supporting for this reason alone.

      • Must be a recent change, or a special Harvey Norman deal, cause the offer through Adam Internet (Starter package $10/month which includes set top box rental) is as I described.
        http://www.adam.com.au/tv/fetchtv/

  • You have to go through an internet provider and from.what I understand of the iinet website, if you buy r rent their box, usage doesn't count towards your quota.

  • See here for the differences between buying from an ISP vs buying from a store with a subscription through Fetch:

    http://www.fetchtv.com.au/packages

With the HN box plus the $5 Fetch sub, you get the 30 free movies per month, but if you get the Entertainment pack too, you get a few extra channels through the ISP deal.

Neither have Fox Sport unfortunately :(

    • so if I get it from Harvey, I won't be able to get any pack?

      • You can get all packs if you get it through harvey

    Lol this looks so crap.

We have FetchTV with iiNet, it's only decent if you are with them as it doesn't count towards quota. The unit itself is pretty terrible codec-wise and I haven't been able to stream stuff from an external-hdd plugged into our BoB2 (it sees the folder but not the files…). Not a big deal, we just plug it into the TV. The movies are in an old format and are ~4gbs or higher and are pretty poor quality. We use ~100GB/month of quota-free fetch content, so be wary of this is you're on other providers.

  • What happens if you get an internet outage? Will the STB become completely inoperational?

    • Yes.
Wont boot past the Internet connection screen.

      • +1

Don't think that quite answers the question, you're right in that the box won't boot without internet access, but if it's up and running and there is an internet failure it will keep running.

I think the $10 a month rental from iinet is a good deal, but I don't think I'd buy it outright.

        • As below, my Optus Fetch TV device boots up no problem without Internet access.

      • +2

Sorry, but this is NOT true. I just tested this by disconnecting Ethernet cable and power, then reconnecting power only and rebooting. Device comes up no problems, all free to air channels can be played, if selecting an IP channel, message comes up: "Could not play channel, check internet connection". Reconnect Ethernet cable and IP channels become available straight away. The only difference I could see is that after a reboot with no internet connectivity, the IP channel logos were not shown in the EPG.

        • Fair enough..
It wont boot past the Internet Connection Screen on setup.
Took me a few minutes to realise that the guy had bought a new modem, and connected the Set Top Box into it, but hadn't connected the modem to a phone line..

Oh which reminds me.. FetchTV DOESN'T have WiFi.. you've got to connect by Ethernet.

  • If there is an internet outage, worst comes to worst, you just dont feed the signal through the box but use the
    TV 'as per normal'

Excluding Foxtel, the main benefit of Fetch over other PVRs is an up to date and 'accurate' TV guide, including season recordings etc (like TIVO had). So as a PVR for FTA recording its probably one of the best (I know about ICE, but you are paying a similar subscription anyway).

Outside of that, some of the other PVRs probably offer more in terms of streaming and so forth. But they are alll $400+ in the whole, so Fetch at $199 plus $5 fee is pretty good. So long as you have a good internet plan. Unlimited plans arent that expensive - factor in the additional $20 per month and it still is no more expensive than a Foxtel subscription (although it used to be much cheaper - no doubt the reason for the price drop) and you may still save money over buying a more expensive PVR.

  • Currently, using my PS3 with play TV. I'm looking for an alternative, my current usage is to record FTA TV so I don't really need the streaming functions (I have a chromecast setup so if I need to stream, I'll go through that via my phone).

My PS3 runs out of space all the time because there are a few movies that I keep in there that I have not had time to watch as well as a decent library of games. Does this thing work for FTA TV if you don't have a FetchTV subscription? E.G. If i did get the subscription for one month just to set it up, does the machine still work for FTA after the month is over?

    Cheers!

Does this thing work for FTA TV if you don't have a FetchTV subscription?

I'm not sure if it is a complete brick, but from my understanding, you would lose most if not all of the useful PVR functionality (eg: EPG / season recording etc).

You might still be able to record "VCR style" though (eg: set it to record for two hours from 5pm Friday).

      • Cheers mate, guess I'll just get a bigger harddrive for my PS3 lol

    • I can't answer your question, but would upgrading the hard drive in the PS3 be more economical if space is the only issue?

      • +1

It is a plan, but there is no way to salvage the things I've recorded if my PS3 dies.

Had it happen to me with my Fat PS3 =(
