excuse my ignorance, but how does one get the $150 gift card?

    • I saw it on their catalogue today, but couldn't work out how to put a picture in post.

    • +1

Mainly cause I was planning on using the gift card to buy a surface pro which has no discount. I guess could also use it on an iPad?

      • +1

Use the gift card to get the leather case and a memory card for the RX100 :) grab the surface from Kogan or something

      • Not on Apple products as they are an agency line.

    • +1

Hi, been looking to get this. which bricks and mortar stores have you seen it for $770?

    • +1

      Please list said stores.

    • Yeah would like to know also. The only surfire way to get cheaper is grey market stock with no GST.

    • ok but where are these B&M stores ????

@EarlyBird where can you get it for $770?? Note this is the Mk3 not the mk2. It retails for $799 in the US and it is over $900 here http://www.teds.com.au/sony-rx100-iii

Seems like a decent offer to me.

    • That's great. Now care to tell us where you can get this for $770?

  • +7

I think EarlyBird just rock jobbed himself

      International Stock though.

      • +1

And no GST, so cannot claim TRS if headed overseas.

Until not long ago JB were still selling the Mark 1 for about $650 and not even selling the Mk II.

  • +1

Cracking deal, if you've got a use for the gift card. Far out. Still happily using the mk1 here as it is a wonderful camera, tempting to Gumtree it and upgrade to one if these though!

  • +1

Awesome camera. Canon G7X is also worth a look if you want near SLR quality in a pocketable form factor, much cheaper too.

    • +2

That clicky focus ring and strange video focus dial is a deal breaker though.

      • A pretty big Youtuber, that I'm not subscribed to, but who owns both the the MK III and the GX7, was recently in a video (with somebody that I am subbed to). Praised the Sony for stills, but scathing about its usefulness for video.

By comparison, it seems like the GX7 is following nicely in the huge footsteps of the 'S' series. Hopefully, though, S120 microphone reliability problems will not re-surface…

The Sony is obviously, still (pun intended), great, but maybe favour the Canon if the video side of things matters to you. I am certainly tempted by it.

        • Casey Neistat by any chance?

Agreed G7X is better for video…. Several of my favourite daily vloggers have upgraded to the G7X presumably over this….

        • +1

I have looked at both and much prefer the Sony for video, as do many of the reviews I have seen…

The Canon offers a bigger zoom range but at the expense of sharpness compared to the Sony, and the Canon has a touch screen which is a nice feature that some videographers like.

Sony offers higher quality video CODECs, full sensor readout (ie no pixel binning), a much more generous selection of frame rates (and higher frame rates for slo-mo), a proper smooth focus ring for pull-focus (compared to Canon's up/down slider) and whilst the Canon is limited to Program, Auto, or certain Scene modes for movie capture, the Sony extends upon this by even allowing Priority and Manual modes.
The Sony also has a built-in pop-up EVF which many (including myself) prefer for video in bright/difficult lighting conditions.

Here or here are some interesting comparisons of a 100% crops (video) of the same scene…

        • @knick007:
Yeah. I didn't mention him by name, because I haven't quite yet cottoned-on to why he's popular.

I do admit to only having watched three or four of his videos (likes from my all-activity feed), but they didn't grab me very much - and they were the artsy, highly edited ones - that, presumably, built his subscriber base.

I will give the (poor guy) another chance at some point.

  • Damn if anyone's going overseas with TRS you take off another $81.73

899/1.1 - 150 = $667.23, don't think you will get it cheaper than that for a while… until whenever mk 4 comes out?

  • Got one, thanks OP.

As mentioned in a comment above please note that you will get a $150 gift VOUCHER, not a gift card. You must use the $150 in ONE future transaction, whereas with a gift card you can do multiple.

My voucher expires on 21 Jan 2015, unlike stated in the link here, https://www.jbhifi.com.au/General/Catalogue-Corrections/ and I had to show them this link as the camera was not in the catalogues at the store.

For the stupid ( me) why is this $900 in comparison to say a $89 Cannon 16 mp camera?

    • this is the best compact camera on the market
even though the megapixels is similar its like saying my holden is also v8 why is ferrari v8 any better?

eg. lens / metal body / evf / AF speed / ISO noise / size / flippy screen / FPS speed = All better.

    • Its a legitimate question, not sure why you got negged.

      1) Sensor size. Contrary to popular advertising, if there is any one spec that is a reasonable guide to the quality of the camera, it is this NOT megapixel count. This has a 1 inch sensor. That is slowly becoming the sweet spot with improving sensor quality.

      2) Its a Sony. One of the leaders if not the leader in camera sensor quality and innovation in quality digital cameras.

      3) The lens - The quality of the optics here is a level far beyond your garden variety compact. The wide aperture means it can let more light in, great for low light, and give you that nice out of focus bokeh effect. Compact cameras cannot do that.

      4) This is a pro tool. It will shoot in RAW and give you full manual control over settings when you want, while still giving you auto options. A RAW file is data straight from the camera sensor, which you can process in Photoshop Lightroom etc. to form the actual image you want to view and print. Most cheaper compacts will give you JPEG output, which is compressed, and limits your editing options.

      5) Focusing - this can focus faster and better than cheap compacts

      6) EVF - electronic viewfinder to look through and frame your photos. More pros dont like framing through a screen on the back

  • Would rather an LX100 at this end of the spectrum tbh, whole league above.

    • -1

Can you list one for this price?

      • -1

Worth the extra ~$200 is all I'm trying to say.
Don't get me wrong though, this is a wonderful camera and if you already have a use case for the voucher then it's a solid deal. RX100 series also tends to hold their value really well, almost Apple-like, which is a bonus.

  • What are the chances of JB HiFi taking an extra $150 off rather than giving a gift voucher? :p

    • I would say none.

  • That seems like a lot for a fixed lens point and shoot.

Wouldn't a sony mirrorless alpha series be better than this, but the same price? Even cheaper?

    • You can spend way more for this or this, and that is without even leaving the Sony stable ;-)
(and they truly are fixed lens)

Wouldn't a sony mirrorless alpha series be better than this

Better than this for what or whom ?!?

    • +2

This is tiny. Fits in your pocket. You know the saying the best camera is the one you have on you at the right time? This is the one you can always have on you. Even mirrors mirrorless with pancake lens is bigger.

      • Fair enough, size factor

  • +5

thanks op - just bought one from Broadway (NSW) Store.

FYI - inside the box you also get a Sony $30 accessory card to purchase stuff from http://www.sony.com.au/productcontent/554386/productcategory…

  • +1

FYI this is maybe a better alternative that's just been released (approx $1100 aud / $900 usd).

Takes 4K video and looks absolutely amazing.

    http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumi…

Doesnt have a flash though. And i believe the zoom range is smaller.

    • +1

Quite a bit more though I mean $1100 aud is a lot for a compact camera. Sure it takes 4K but you can only really take advantage of that if you have a 4K monitor.

Hopefully the RX100 Mark IV will have 4K.

Reviews look great though, panasonic has really grabbed a market share by making mostly affordable 4K cameras, Canon, Nikon and Sony need to catch up quickly.

    • Yep, astonishing piece of kit. As a casual camera user who loves his DSLR, I am really looking forward to these next few 'compact', large sensor, cameras.

I wish we'd see faster processors to allow for more slow-mo video, though. Nikon was doing it years ago with their mirrorless range that allowed for small resolution but huge framerate videos - I really want to see that expanded in these consumer-level 4k video cameras. 640x480/1280x720/1920x1080 at a billion FPS please.

JB is selling with $764.15 right now, does $150 gift voucher still apply, if it is, the camera will cost around $614.15, great deal, let us know, cheers.

    • Almost get to the right price.

      • any cheaper sale ? cheers

        • nop…still waiting for good deal myself.

    • +3

Answer is yes. Paid $764.15 today and $150 voucher printed out on docket (automated).

      • possible to upload the receipt?

    • I paid $764.15 and received the $150 gift voucher. Note that voucher is to be used in one purchase.

      • 24 hours later, voucher will be activated, I have bought one but strange JB keeps only this camera for display, not in the box liked brand new.
