received reply from paypal as follow:

I have read and understood your email that you are asking how to avail
the PayPal cash back with a particular merchant. In this case, it would
be best to contact the merchant and ask for the item they offer for
PayPal cash bask, after which, all you need to do is to buy that item.
If the transaction and the item are eligible for PayPal cash back,
automatically it will be credited to you; you not have to do anything.
In regards to the amount that you would like to spend, its not really
imply to have a certain limit for transaction. It depends on the
merchant terms and condition. So kindly contact the merchant and make
some clarification in regards to their products.

i gave them the $20 cashback link in my email so I would presume they are aware of the deal :)

    • +2

They speak good engrish don't they.

    • This means when I make some purchase more than A$50, it's very likely part of my purchase not satisfy the merchant requirement, and no cash back at all. If so, this deal is even worse than a gamble game.

  • I saw this advertisment on trading post.

    • online or paper? did they have the link advertised there?

    • +1

blinks Paypal, owned by ebay, puts ads on their competitors website? ^_^

  • -4

is it $50 AUD or $50 USD?

    • +5

      sigh, read the post dude

  • +1

I saw the paypal ad for this deal on 'The Sunday Times' (Western Australia) website this morning. Made me feel a whole lot better.

  • +2

Ok, after reading all these posts I was feeling slightly paranoid. THe paypal ad makes me feel a whole lot better. I just spent $50US @ sasa, and free shipping because of paypal coupon, so I'm hoping its going to be worth it because I'm planning on buying some more stuff over the next few days before the coupon expires! It's paypalapac2009 for free shipping until the end of the month.

  • Rightio..purchased off of DX. Will see if the PayPal $$ comes through. Thankfully it's all (mostly) stuff I would have wanted anyway (amazingly enough considering it IS deal extreme).

  • its a good deal but its not THAT good, if it was $20 paypal credit for whatever it would be a awesome deal.

    • 40% off already cheap rates and discounts is not THAT good? It essentially is $20 credit with a minimum $50 purchase.

  • -7

Can I ask why Ozbargain keeps deleting my comments? I posted a warning to others, twice before this, that Overstock.com had a dual pricing scheme and that they charge people with Australian IP's significantly more than their US customers, this has nothing to do with subsidising their shipping as they already charge very high shipping rates. Is it somehow illegitimate to warn people not to get ripped off? Pretty dissapointing.

    • +1

Its not being deleted its being hidden because people are voting down your comments. If you don't like Overstock dont shop there. Don't vote down an entire deal because of one or two stores.

      • -4

As I said before, Paypal should not be supporting these stores that charge Australian customers more. I just wanted to post a warning to others about overstock.com as it is the most noteable site there. It would be a shame if someone went there, bought a camera, paid 40% more as they weren't warned.

        • +2

paypal are supporting the stores that they receive funds through. i.e. the only way to pay on most (if not all) of those sites is through paypal. I don't think they could care less if they were good value, just they are receiving funds from the store

          • -4

@Davo1111: Exactly, though I wouldn't mind if they were supporting stores which were bad value as long as they charge the same to their American customers.

            • +1

@thelateshow: Leave it upto consumers to buy from overstock or not. If its cheaper from overstock even with the higher price good for them. If its more expensive then local alternatives dont buy it. Why shouldn't Paypal support them just because they charge more. They are a big retailer and make Paypal good money, they aren't going to care about one mans anti-overstock crusade on ozbargain.

              • -6

@zhenjie: Firstly, I don't think paypal should support them because being charged more for being an Australian is a low act.

Secondlay, I am not stating that customers should or should not do anything, merely pointing something out so that consumers will have optimal information on which to base their decisions.

Thirdly, make that anti-dual pricing schemes crusade rather than anti-overstock.

            • +2

@thelateshow: To be fair, Overstock might be jacking up the prices because their Australian competitors get away with it. They've shot themselves in the foot in the eyes of wary online shoppers like ourselves, though. The main attraction of buying from overseas, despite the longer delivery times, is because even after shipping costs the price is a fair bit lower.

It is not PayPal's place to demote stores; the decision to buy is on the customer, just like with credit cards.

Thanks for the heads-up though, thelateshow. I ususally research my purchases anyway, but I'll be more way of Overstock from now on.

              • -6

@TimeOrMoney: I wouldn't expect paypal to demote a store with a dual pricing scheme, just not pro-actively promote.

Your right, because they can get away with it, but If you are buying a large electrical item, you could buy from another US store that does not jack up their prices for foreigners and do a lot better even though you don't get the $20 cashback, because in the USA in general electronics are much much cheaper.

                • +1

@thelateshow: Well done on the pickup, but I doubt the promotion has anything to do with jacking up prices on AU orders.

                  • +2

@nats: No point trying to talk sense into this guy.

                    • @zhenjie: such is life :)

                    • @zhenjie: I never claimed that the promotion had anything to do with them jacking up prices, I am aware they were doing that before, I said Paypal should not be supporting that activity if you read back over my posts. Now who doesn't make sense?

                      • @thelateshow: 210 positive votes. 1 negative from you. Yes sir, you make a lot of sense to vote down a bargain due to your disagreement with one or two stores. It's becoming all too common on Ozbargain, the majority of smart people vote on the bargains merits and then there are some idiots who vote based on illogical reasons.

                        • -4

@zhenjie: Good luck completing grade four, you will need it.

                          • -2

@thelateshow: Is that all you can come up with? Lol

                          • +2

@thelateshow: I love This guy. Everyone is crazy….. except for him!

There are heaps of shops listed here. So you don't like a couple, WOW dont buy from them!

You point is as stupid as voting down a deal for Coke at Coles because they sell coffee that supports slavery.

                            • @Duff5000: i just went on overstock.com to see what was the fuss about, and what a joke, the prices are alot higher for aussies. Definitely not shopping there. (well i wasn't going to anyway but now i know)

                            • @Duff5000: In no way shape or form did I claim that anyone was crazy or incorrect for voting for this deal. In most respects it is a great deal, but I voted against it on principle, Overstock is the biggest store there with the most variety and the only place to buy large consumer electronics, it probably represents a much larger ratio of the money that people are spending on this deal, than other stores. I work for the ACCC (though I speak for myself on here) so I would not expect you or anyone else to attribute the same significance as this to me, it is this kind of thing im paid to look out for. Seems like there are a few intollerent people on this website.

                              • +1

@thelateshow: After following the thread and reading every post, I have come to the conclusion that, as of now, only a couple of people are really concerned with buying from overstock.com (and the second person only went there to verify your complaints). Everyone else is more interested to buy from the cheaper sites (DX, FP, Tiny deals,etc.).
So, your argument about Overstock having more expensive items for Aussies, hence the negative vote, doesn't hold ground.

  • I just bought a book from Better world books. I tried looking for a way to pay in AUD, I went to conversion options, selected Paypal conversion and still the site charged in USD. I only have a card linked to the account and couldn't find any other options so I hope it's not a problem.

  • The wording of the term and conditions kind of support the claim made by macadamia that it is only valid for a “qualifying purchase”, which could mean that only certain items are eligible for the cash back offer NOT everything.

This offer is open to Australian PayPal customers who:
    2) complete a qualifying purchase from one of the qualifying Merchant's websites during the Promotion Period. Eligibility to this promotion will be determined by PayPal in its sole discretion.

    • I think qualifying purchase means not buying a gift card or voucher from the store which the T&C later refers to.

  • Well I have gone sick over at deal extreme.
    Lotsa junk for Christmas!

Anyone know how the quality (or lack of it) is with these USB Digital TV tuners?
    Very cheap, you. Only $15.

hmm might want to read the reviews dude. These things can be dodgy - particularly if they're not within a 15-20% price range of msy.

  • Has anyone received an email from Paypal disputing this offer. I would think they would have heard of it by now and at least notified their clients that it was fake.

  • +1

Hey guys i contacted Paypal about this offer and this is what they replied:
    Dear ******,
Thank you for contacting PayPal, my name is Lorelei and I am happy to assist you today.

I understand in your email about your enquiry for the promotional offer for $ 20 AUD cash back if you process a payment with Paypal.

Unfortunately, we have not received any notifications yet from Paypal
with regards to this promotion. I would suggest for you to contact
first the merchant and verify from them on how and when you are going to
    get the cash back.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 02
    8223 9500.

    Sincerely,
    Lorelei

So yeah if you do call and contact them let me know =) hope this helps!

    • +4

Why are they asking people to contact the merchant when paypal themselves said they would give the $20 in the offer?

The merchant did not say they were going to offer the cashback. It was paypal!

      • +1

umm, paypal have neither confirmed or denied the offer is valid (despite them advertising it on their website, and in newspapers). and they said contacting the merchants.

      • When Webjet offered $100 cashback when paying by paypal for return flights to NZ, i rang paypal too to confirm the offer. Paypal told me to ring webjet as the promotion was completely webjet's - and webjet is the one depositing the $100 into my paypal account.

This may be the same case, but seems a little sus. too bad i've already made the orders

    • -2

I don't know what you sent them, but it appears this person has absolutely no idea, its there in black and white under the terms and conditions, this is clearly a PayPal administered promo.

      • +2

isnt the whole problem though that the promo website is not paypal.com.au but paypal-offers.com.au

and the fact that NOBODY has received any confirm emails regarding the $20? Even if there is an ad for it on some legit website it just means that paypal-offers.com.au is putting up the ad.

Could be a bit of a conspiracy by those merchants to drive up buisness and then not offer cashback saying that its paypals fault when in fact it was themselves that instigated the fake cashback??

  • Has anyone bought from Overstock.com using PayPal in Australian dollars? According to their site: "We accept Visa and Mastercard. PayPal is accepted if you are paying with CAD only."

So, I contacted Overstock about this offer and received this reply:
"At this time, PayPal is only available for Canadian orders. I apologize for any inconvenience."

    • that's really suspicious then that they are part of this 'deal'

  • I +ved for the OP, but I must say I hate, yes hate pay-pal with passion.

    • what did they do to u?

      • +1

I would guess, that goofy has sold many personal belongings on ebay and has been charged some 5% in fees by ebay and then another 2% in fees by paypal, a major cost if you've solds hundreds/thousands worth of items.

And if you try to pass on the paypal or ebay fees to the buyer, ebay will withdraw your listing for breeching their conditions of use.

I feel the same way and this is why.

      • generally the paypal dispute team lean towards the buyer. which is great for the buyer, but shit if you're a seller and they reach into your account and take your funds

They've gone from not knowing what we were talking about, to we have to contact the seller, to "yes this is a legitimate offer" :)

I understand that you would like to clarify the information about the promotions being offered by PayPal.
First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you have experienced in this matter.

  • good deal, spend $30 to save $20!

Just ordered some new release books from betterworldbooks
Seeing that these are about $40 Aud each locally quite a deal
Also get the $20 back from PayPal!
You can use the following code for a further 10% off: ptk0809
The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time) by Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson $22.48
Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett $19.98
The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind $20.98 ea.

    Subtotal: $63.44
    Tax: $0.00
    Shipping: $11.91

    Phi Theta Kappa 08-09 (10%): ($6.34)
    Total USD: $69.01

    • Nice work!
Books make superb Chrissy presents too.

      • and an awesome choice of books! I don't know if I can wait for The Gathering Storm to be delivered though… I'll probably go and get the hardback copy directly from Borders using the 30% off coupon.

        • The borders 30% discount is not so useful on new releases - For other books good deal.

What borders typically do is discount the new release hardcover from a ridiculous $49 to something in the high 30's or low 40's.

When you try to use the 30% off voucher the discount is calculated from the full marked price of $49. Last year when i tried to purchase Terry Pratchet's Nation, they were running that on special for $34 and when I applied the discount it increased in price to around $38. Little deceptive IMO

  • There is a bit of rhumage (big financial reporting week in the US) that drops the Dow this week could turn into nasty "corrections". Dow down sharply overnight.
    What does that translate to?
    Aussie dollar pooping itself.

Get in while the getting is good!

    • interesting. how should we capitalise on the possible fall of the aud?

what ways are there to convert aud into usd to be held for a relatively long term? (weeks to months?)

      • Get into Forex :), or buy heaps of gift vouchers with the Paypal rebate and spend later.

      • Well, first let me state that a rumor is exactly that, just a rumor, so PLEASE don't take it as any kind of advice.
Right having said that, from memory, the peak of the AU-US$ dollar exchange rate was ~ 96c before the fall. It bottomed ~ 57c.
If you want to hold funds at any given rate (minus Paypal's regular 'nip') you can do it easily from the front page of your Paypal account. You just log in and change it over.

    • Dow falls -> possible drop of $AUD?

      • Usually goes that way.
Opposite true too, especially these days.

        • +1

          was wondering about that :)

With the last crash, I heard the problem was a lot of hedge fund stocks had been holding Australian dollar among other commodities. Crash came, they had to dump what they could, to try and have some US dollars in pocket. So the Australian dollar crashed big time.

This time around, I don't know if the hedge funds restocked on the Australian dollar … though I guess we did see a very quick rise in it's value. I don't know how to check though, how much is being held by who …

Also, I'm not sure if the rise in the Australian dollar against the American one, is so much a rise in the perceived value of the Australian dollar, or a general devaluation of the American one (to increase American exports)

          • @SomeGuyOnOzB: Well a lot of the old certainties have been challenged in recent times, so truly know one knows what will happen next. So many factors without precedent. A 50% +/- swing in the $AU over 8 months is technically mental in a strong and stable economy such as Australia's.
In the simplest sense, the $AU works as a pretty reliable 'litmus test' of future investment confidence, particularly manufacturing confidence as it is tied to the need for commodities. As the Dow drops quite often investors flock back to the (massively overvalued and somewhat shaky $US) which has risen in recent days despite the fundamentals of their economy being, how do you say, ah yes, 'rooted'.
Really it's as simple as Dow up/dollar up Dow drops dollar down. With very little lag-time.

            • @King Tightarse: If you have funds in AUD in Paypal, you can easily open a USD balance and opt to transfer however much you want between both AUD and USD balances (or GBP or anything else for that matter). They do give a pretty poor exchange rate going both ways but I suppose they already charge you that anyway if you're going to pay in US dollars and convert your AUD -> USD at time of payment.

I am chatting with a representative from FocalPrice via their LiveHelp.

(it took 14 minutes before they first started to type stuff into the message box, so, you probably want to do something else at the same time if you try chatting with them)

The rep said to speak to local Paypal to find out details about the offer. The rep also said it's an activity being held by Paypal.

I guess we can only do what the deal says. Sit back and see the bonus payment arrive in our accounts by 4 Dec 2009.

That and post the results here. :)

  • -5

No offence guys but this offer seems like a load of crap.

To get $20 off you need to spend $50 to import stuff from a bunch of specific websites (that don't seem to even know that the offer exists, and some of the websites even charge you a higher price if you are from Australia), pay a high postage cost and then hope that paypal even knows about this offer and gives you your $20 back.

It might be a bargain if you were already planning on importing from those websites but I'm not sure if it's worth worrying about for the $20.

    • +1

      Wow.
I reckon if Jesus turned up in person at your place, to give you a million dollars and a new Ferrari….you'd still find something to whinge about.

    • High postage cost? Postage is FREE with sites like Dealextreme, Focalpoint and Tiny Deals. With the other websites its no more then $10-$20AUD. That'scheaper then some Aussie sellers charge for postage.

  • Good post. Lets see if we REALLY get the $20 in December. Fingers Cross.

  • Can someone please clarify if I still get $20 if I let my credit card do the conversion from US$ to AU$, instead of using the Paypal conversion rates?

  • Anyone actually get 20% back ? i am afraid to spend 50$ without 20$ back

    • read the post. you get it by 4th dec

    • Don't worry - you'll get it. The offer seems genuine - even saw it advertised on cricinfo.com

    • is eneloop supposed to be good? 2000mah is mundane even for lsd low self discharge cells.

"+ Real capacity for the four Eneloops I received is 2.08, 2.10, 2.11, 2.16 Ah (measured by La Crosse BC-900U at 350 mA discharge rate, after a few charge-discharge cycles).
+ Very good internal resistance which is very important for high drain applications such as a photo flash at sequential shooting mode.
+ The self discharge rate seems to be really very low (although I have no my own exact data yet).
+ The build quality is irreproachable." from dx reviews.

sounds like a good buy. but then again, some ppl in teh forum complain of fakes.

      • Not worried about fakes.
Problem seems to be sorted now.

I'm worried that sending 16 batteries in the mail from Hong Kong to AUS, they might not get here.

  • Its being advertised on news.com.au too, thats puts an end to an doubts. Would have been nice if the offer included big online stores with variety not mostly crap.

  • I'm a Paypal noob, so I have a question. I usually only ever use Paypal to pay when I have funds in there (which I've transferred from my bank account). The transfer takes up to 3 days, which would be too late if I want to make use of this offer by 31st.

So what can I do if I want to make an order before 31st but don't have funds in the Paypal account? Would linking my credit card to the account mean I don't have to have funds in there before I can purchase? Thanks for any help!

if there's no fund in the paypal acct, paypal will automatically and instantly deduct funds from your verified savings acct - or if you dont have a verified savings acct (or inadequate funds in the savings acct), it'll deduct instantly from your linked CC.

the whole thing is automatic, as long as you have any acct linked to paypal.

      • So if I make my purchase on the 31st, I'd still qualify for this even if the funds from my linked savings acct may take a couple of days to clear? Thanks!

yeah. its 3rd nov not 31st oct btw. you have a few more days left.

the fund that paypal deducts from your accts may not appear instantly. but the transaction, when it does finally appear, will be of the day that you made the purchase, not the day that it appears.

          ur welcome!

  • AUD is dropping back (slightly as for now).
I hav all the stuff in the cart planning to pay for it on 1st nov via credit card (paypal)… so that I would only hav to pay for my items by the end of dec (poor student here..lol).

Is it worth the wait? Just scared it might tumble back to .88cents or less then its less worth to purchase.
