  • Where are you going? a phrase book can be extremely useful. It was how we managed to rent a hotel room without speaking any japanese and no English speaker was around.

  • Yeah, that would be good, but they speak English in the US ;)

    • Sort of … lol

  • Offline maps are usually more reliable… get here maps free..

Another offline map option (my favourite) is Citymaps2go.

For organising you have to go a long way to beat TripIt. https://www.tripit.com/?should_not_use_mobile=Go+to+full+sit…

If I'm going somewhere that has a public transport system - ie the subway- I also download a journey planner/map app for that.

    • +1 for TripIt. It's amazing. If you're OCD, you'll love it.

      • whats OCD for?

        • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. (It's a genuine disorder that I shouldn't of used in this context.)

I get into the detail a little too much sometimes and will look at what time the plane lands, estimate time to collect luggage, clear customs etc, then get to the next train/bus/car/horse and buggy, and have all of this noted down in TripIt. I know the 2 trains before and after the one I want just in case I arrive earlier/later. Most people will cringe and wonder how that's a holiday. For me, it's a challenge and I enjoy planning it.

I do however also have the complete opposite holiday where I'll book flights and land with a backpack and a vague idea about what I might like to do so I'll wing it.

    • I downloaded citymap2go.I am going back Viet nam therefore I selected Vn as my destination. I try to find the place that I want but its could not appear anything.Where should I find the basic guideline to use the citymaps2go?

  • I would get a star map of the Northern Hemisphere. You are going to get curious about which star is which :)

    • That's a good idea, esp out of the city. It may not get a lot of use in NYC though.

  • I'm very happy to use WorldMate - organises your travel plans very well and presents neatly. I also use trip advisor extensively for research about places to visit.

    • I use WorldMate too. I just use it to keep track of flights. On more than one occasion it has told me about flight delays before they've announced them at the airport. It's very easy to add trips as well, just email the itinerary from the airline and it's added. While good, I certainly wouldn't be at a loss without it though.

  • TripIt.com - awesome, free. You can forward travel confirmation emails and it automatically imports and files. There's a premium version but the free version is perfect for holidays.

  • Cheers, now in the precess of organising Tripit. and will check out citymaps2go.

I found this very handy. (Works offline too, with last entered details)

  • Does the iPhone software now have a calculator built in. If not get one. Helps with calculating tips and USD to AUD. Also a decent alarm clock program.

And a subway map helps too.

  • Oh and tipping in New York is a bit more than other parts of the states. Expect to see 25-30% recommended by restaurants etc. sad :(

Oh and it might not be the same now, but when we went the price you see on goods is not what you will pay, as they add tax on at the checkout.

Also you can order from Amazon and have it delivered to you hotel. Good for stuff not shipping outside the U.S. The hotel we stayed at in disneyland seemed to be the best at this. It can get a bit nerve wracking so don't order anything too expensive!

    • Any hotel will do this. Probably worth getting insured shipping for anything expensive!

  • Thanks Natt for the intelligence.

  • I take these apps with me every country I visit.

XE Currency - Important for working out the exchange rate
Google Translate - Important when you are in non english countries, has a great feature where it types it in local text and you can display your question easy.
Jetstar/Qantas/Your Flight Carrier - Good if they offer WiFi streaming, or if you need to check in, Easier to show your phone and carry your flight details in the app
Uber - Pain free travel (Unless you're on the gold coast in QLD .. Uber there is the asshole of the world.)
Calc - Add up your bills/ Split of a bill etc
Notepad App - Record your notes, normally how much i've spent every day if i'm travelling on a budget
Google Maps - Or any map app. Sooo Important!
Flash light App - If you're phone doen't have a flash light option.
Google Lattitude (RIP) / Find my Friends - Super important if you are alone and you're not sure if you will make it back alive. This is good for someone to keep track on you .. or if you're phone gets stolen
Bank App - Move you're money / Pay Bills

Games/Music - because flying with no TV sucks.

hot tip - Take a USB cable in you're carry on, More and more planes have USB ports now!

    • A few to add to this -

      1. App Box Pro - has a currency converter, bill splitter, tax calculator, unit converter discount calculator, spending calculator/tracker + heaps more in one handy app

      2. Trip it - I think it has been mentioned but really useful to quickly look up your booking ref number if you have to at the airport

      3. Ulmon maps (offline maps) - has heaps of countries and cities. If you search Ulmo GmbH in the app store they should come up

      4. Word lens probably not particularly useful for New York but really good for Europe

      5. Packing Pro - good for managing what is in what bag if they get lost or stolen

In addition to this I recommend grabbing a AT&T sim from eBay if you haven't already done so and a portable battery pack as using the internet to look stuff up and especially google maps uses a lot of battery.

  • Here's a few, some alreday mentioned plus a few more … http://www.traveller.com.au/top-ten-travel-apps-that-can-eas…

I see it says to tip on the tax on the bill too. I don't think that's correct.
