  • G8 1610T v N54L? Any one tried both?

    • No real world experience but I was tossing up about this myself a few weeks ago.

N54L is quieter and uses less power but has a weaker CPU (approx 60 percent strength of Gen8 1610t). Would pick Gen 8 if you plan to use it for PLEX to transcode media (N54L Would struggle or not be able to do HD content). N54L otherwise as you can also cram more drives into it.

      • I have never understood what people mean when they talk of transcoding power? I have the model down, N40L with Plex server and stream to a NUC steam box, WDTV, nexus 7, and phone and have never had an issue doing anything.

That said, my files are compressed 2gb HD

      • I'm using a N36L running freenas with a shared folder that XBMC reads off and a Plexmediaserver instance with PlexConnect to stream to an AppleTV 3, and also an iPad and HP touchpad using Plex. I haven't run into any processing power issues so far, admittedly mostly with 720 content but have done a few 1080 movies off it.

Bought one for 400 during the ebay sale! Couldn't find anything else close to that price at the time!

    • Same! Kicking myself now!

Wonder if we could return these with PayPal free returns? And repurchase from shopping express.

Just checked the conditions on eBay, apparently the seller will hit me with 15% restock fee. Since I've already opened the box. Wipes out any potential savings for me

As much as I'm a shopping express fanboy, if all you want is an n54l, budget PC have it for $279 delivered (to ACT, shipping may vary). http://budgetpc.com.au/new-products/744900-371.html

    • So SE have it for $1 cheaper, not sure what you are sayin?

      • +2

Have to buy 2 items to qualify for free shipping at SE

        • Thanks insidious. That is indeed what I meant when I said "if all you want…". Obviously if you want to buy a second item, you'll get the free shipping and then shopping express is probably a better option.

The Budget PC one is $259.00 + $20.00 postage to ACT ($279.00). The SE one is not free shipping?

(FYI - Budget PC seem to have had this deal for about 6 months now… and if you can pick up, save on postage too).

I suggest you DO NOT buy that Seagate 3TB drive. It is model ST3000DM001.
WARNING the ST3000DM001's are absolute LEMONS.

    https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/

43% failure rate, average life of 2.2 years after testing ~1100 of these drives.

Personally, I've had 2 die, one within 12 months, and one at 19 months.

    Buyer beware!!

Makes me wonder why shopping express aren't selling these with NAS drives

man I bought my microserver back in 2013, cant believe the RAM hasn't come down in price since then! (115 is what I paid back then, - and side point 399 for the gen8)

appreciate the Dollar has gone down hill, (it was about 89 when I bought mine its now 78…) but that was a year and a half ago…

technology certainly isn't falling in price like it used to. its only fallen the same as the AUD has fallen basically…

  • So final thoughts: is this a good deal. can anyone in community vouch for hp quality, issues, are there other things out there. cheers!

Great deal! Excellent price! Fantastic build quality! What more do you want?

Seriously this is an excellent unit, love mine and don't regret it!

      • exactly what im looking for ;D thanks

    • Echoing t25's sentiments (although I am talking about the N54L and not the G8).

I have the N54L running Xpenology. Its the base N54L, no extra RAM and with a couple of Hitachi drives in from my old QNAP.

I have Plex installed, no transcoding going on as my Samsung TV has native plex and my pi runs Rasplex. Never missed a beat, never failed to play anything that I have thrown at it. It also has the usual Usenet requirements humming along.

By far and away the N54L kills my QNAP.

    • 16GB Ram Max, on the GEN8, uses more power, but still not bad.

wooooot, just purchased a gen8 after my n40l died due to mother nature. cant wait to get my server up and running again

  • Hmmmm
