    Where is the bargain?

    • +3

I find this as a non-bargain since it doesn't come with added Hep A

    • @ coles :)

  • not really a deal.

Woolies have the 1kg pack for around that price

    • +4

      Country of origin?

      • not sure, i see them in the frozen food section but never have bought

        Nanna's 1kg 1kg for $8
        Woolowrths select 500grams 1kg for $9

      • +8

        The post heading says

        …Australian Fresh Frozen Blueberries!

They have other ones from Chile which are 500g and are 3 for $10 ($6.70kg)

        • +1

ROFL - a negative vote - what for? The facts are that Tonster said they are "AUSTRALIAN" I added the Chile Blueberries to highlight the cheaper ones are from there not to be confused with Australian ones.

          EC's examples are from Chile.

          http://pattiesfoods.com.au/nannas/nanna-s-frozen-fruit/froze…

        • They have other ones from Chile which are 500g and are 3 for $10 ($6.70kg)

They are not 500.- gram 3 for 10.- they are only around 300gram. Strawberries and similar are 500gram bags

        • +2

          @RockyRaccoon:

You do know that there is a chance they are Australian Blueberries packed in CHINA

        • @dosada: Sorry but I have 3 packs in my fridge that I bought on Saturday

Coles Blueberries from Chile 500g - Cost $10 for the 3.

Now if they have discontinued these that may be. Voting negative because you think the post is in error is fine, but then when someone does that, at least posting why would be more informative.

EC - Hoxygt asked for country of origin. Not where packed. Might want to buy some Australian spectacles :)

          @easternculture:

Whilst a possibility, why a company would do that is beyond me if they were going to have the finished products sent back to Aus. Might be cheaper to just have them packed in Aus instead of double freight charges.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

I didn't vote negative. I only do that on obvious spam or bargains which are way more then regular. I didn't actually vote at all here.

        • @dosada: Ok I thought since you questioned the size, that you had done so. 😋

The point is still valid for the person who did. No issue with the vote, just cant see why they did so.

          BTW (it is 500g)

        • @ProjectZero: I bought Australian Grown green tea recently at Coles. Packed in Japan!

        • @tommyc: Touche, still can't follow that logic unless they ship it to other countries as well.

        • @ProjectZero: I looked into it. The parent company is Japanes and I guess they've existing factories in Japan. So I suppose they buy Australian tea leaves so they can sell a differentiated product. Unfortunate an Australian owned company can't do this as I imagine the bulk of the profits are retained by the packaging company in comparison to the tea growers.

        • @tommyc: Yeah, a multinational company might be able to do it, but if it was an Australian company selling only to Australian consumers, I doubt that would be possible.

        • @tonester:

I wont believe it till i see it

Grown across the country, they are then frozen & packed with care, by an Australian-owned company

Grown across the country … yes ok … then shipped to China to an Australian Owned company operated in China to reduce labor costs … then shipped back to Australia

        • @easternculture: Coles got busted for misleading the public with para frozen bread being "baked fresh in store"

The website also says Product of Australia with The kangaroo label which has strict requirements. See the label with tonesters link

          https://colesbuzz.com.au/2013/08/13/100-australian-frozen-bl…

          Product of Australia
All of the product's significant ingredients come from Australia; and
All, or nearly all of the manufacturing or processing has been carried out in Australia.

I really doubt if they would try trickery again wth words when they also say that. The fine was rather large.

I finally got around to getting a refund for my 1kg Nannas mixed berries. Only got about ~$10 though, though I paid around $20 for them.

    • -2

Bs mate we know how much they cost. Not sure why people need to post lies.

      • Wow not sure why you're so defensive? How much did you pay for them? I thought I paid $20 but it was a while ago, so I could be mistaken.

        • -3

1kg go for $10 or so
          500gms for 5$

There are organic ones that sell for like 300gms for 5 bucks but I doubt u were talking bout them. Seams like u dono what ur on about and if u didn't get the hint when the store told u I'm telling u now. I really hate reading crap online. Sure it was t $50 u paid ?

        • +1

Your original comment missed the ending t in thought, so it does read differently 😋 (It was not my vote)

Not sure why you think this post is crap free advertising.

Find us a link to a cheaper Australian frozen blue berry please

  • +4

Not sure why there is such hate for this post. I find these berries to be much tastier than the Chinese/Chilean suppliers. Worth spending a little extra for the taste, safety and supporting local growers. Kid eats these everyday so this is a good deal for my family.

    • It is not against the farmers, this is just the regular price so how can it be a bargain

      • regular prices can be a bargain when less than similar/equivalent alternatives elsewhere :)

        bargain = value = quality/price

    • +1

Yeah, not a bargain - you know how many items in coles and woolies they mark down to an 'everyday price'? We would be inundated with posts.

      • +1

You're right. Still think its a good deal though.

  • Aldi's cheaper at 3.99 (500g). Hopefully Hepatitis free. Although if this genuinely Australian, I'll take a punt at this price.

    • Actually in the latest catalog its says $3.29 (500g) They are from Chile.

  • +2

Well I think this seams like a good price.

Wasn't the nanna's stuff $9.99 a kilo? So Australian produce for slightly more seams pretty decent.

Fresh frozen? Reminds me of the following Fawlty Towers dialogue.

Mr Hutchison: I assume that all the vegetables within the omelette are fresh?
    Basil: Oh yes, yes.
    Mr Hutchison: Including the peas?
Basil: Oh yes, they're fresh alright.
Mr Hutchison: They're not frozen are they?
Basil: Ah, well they're frozen yes.
Mr Hutchison: Well see if they're frozen they're not fresh, are they?
Basil: Well I can assure you they were absolutely fresh when they were frozen.

  • Thanks for the Post.

Aldi $6.58/KG so 40% cheaper at Aldi.

    Aldi $9.87 for 1.5KG, (made of up 3 x 500G packs at $3.29ea).

    Aldi berries from Chile.

  • +1

I don't know why there's all this scaremongering with these berries, there was no proven link between the nannas frozen berries and those few cases of hep a which could have been contracted elsewhere.

Also these berries aren't even the same brand so I don't know why someone would bring up the issue in the first place.

    • Patties foods copped a lot of flack in February over the Hep-A scare, including a fair bit of China bashing over their food safety record. Subsequent tests showed no Hep-A in the recalled blueberries.

Even when the scare was well under way I recall media reports at the time saying there were about 25 nation wide Hep-A cases in February, which was significantly lower than for the same time last year. It didn't stop the sensational headlines however.

Patties has since changed their blueberry supply from China to Chile.

      • Patties conducted testing on their berries and found no hep A and I would be shocked if they said they did. Law firms are all over this for a class action so I wouldn't put any faith in what Patties says.

        • I wouldn't put any faith in what Patties says

That's your choice, but read the Dept of health report

          http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Conten…

Considering only mixed berries from China were suspected, Patties also recalled products packed in the same facility as a precaution.

For a company trying to minimise costs, this wouldn't have been cheap to do. As for results of tests being covered up, thats your opinion based on what?

Probably past history where some companies tried to cover up errors, but while that might mean the probably on average would be higher, its not a statement anyone has been able to prove at this point.

Using historical data would also suggest our media might also have got it wrong. They have shown that self interest works for them as well.

  • +2

    Product of Australia.

  • "fresh frozen"? is that a double negative? lol

    • Maybe they mean 'snap frozen'…

    • fresh as opposed to say crushed/dehydrated/macerated/marinated :)

    • Remember hearing at uni that some frozen veg is actually "fresher"/higher in vitamins than fresh veg due to being frozen shortly after picking rather than being transported & stored before being sold. Maybe more of an issue for remote areas?
I thought fresh frozen just meant they haven't pre-cooked cubed and processed it.

  • aldi sells 500g blueberries/raspberries (chile) @ $3.99

    • $3.29 now mate.
      Love Aldi

      • wow that's cheap! thanks for the heads up.

  • Is it best to avoid berries from Chile?

    • Yeah i am unsure from all these posts if berries from Chile are what i should be looking for or avoiding.

      • +4

neither - ignore all the posts and just support australia :)

    • Depends

If you want Blueberries and cant buy local. They are ok. But Frozen.
No reports that Chilean blueberries have had any health issues
Even when added to Chinese mixed berries, it was never established that Chilean blueberries were the offending product

From Department of Health Media release

The product is packed in China, containing raspberries, strawberries and blackberries grown there, and blueberries. The blueberries in the product were initially thought to have come from Chile, however, the Department of Health is now advised by the company that they were sourced from Canada.

  • now available again - time to stock up :)

    • Thanks, will buy some the next time I am at Coles.
