I just got an email from Economy Car Rentals with a discount code. It's not a huge discount but might shave a little off your rental amount. For me it worked out to a saving of $9 on an $1100 rental.

so about a 0.81% discount in reality

Think about it, its obviously a typo.
for $1100, one could buy a cheap car and sell it afterwards.

No, not a typo. It's an 18 day rental out of JFK Airport. I am cheap but I'm not spending my overseas holiday trying to buy and sell beat-up cars. I'm gonna give your comment a + because for half a minute I did think about doing what you suggest (then realised my other half will kill me).

    • like I said, not a huge discount. It did mean that the amount I pay now came down from 89AUD to 80AUD. The amount I have left to pay when I pickup the car stays the same.

      • I used the same company back in March when doing a SFO to LAX trip in California so know how their payment structure works. The change in exchange rate was the annoying thing as the rental price was never 'locked in' until the day.
Worked fine (though the car selection at SFO was lacking and they do the hard sell when getting the car on upgrades, tank of fuel, roadside insurance etc etc… I took the tank of fuel to save myself some hassle, but this was more an end company problem than economy as the middle man though I am sure its partly due to the discounted rate you get via economy that they try and upsell on some extras).

        • Which company did you actually get the car from? Mine is through Europcar. Reviews that I've seen are not great but it's almost $1000 cheaper than I can find anywhere else so I'm willing to put up with substandard service. As long as I leave the lot with a safe working car that accomodates 3 people and our luggage I'm happy.

        • @ocallaghans:

Alamo is who my rental ended up through

  • 10% off Car Rental Deposit at Economy Car Rentals

So the discount is off the deposit and not the rental cost?
So it ends up costing you the same???

    • It does not end up costing you the same. Yes, the discount is only off the deposit portion. It is still a discount but much less than 10%.

      • Change the title and OP then.

I'm happy to change it but not sure what the problem is. It already says 10% off car rental deposit. Do you have a suggestion that would make it clearer?

        • +1

@ocallaghans: Maybe include the words - Net 1% of total rental

although shopping around thru priceline etc may give you a better total from another company

Or booking via Cashrewards and getting rebate

        • @ocallaghans:

Outline how much the deposit is. If you could make the deposit 100% off the price and save 10%, then great! Bit hard for a title…

  • I just booked a car rental from holidayautos.com very cheap and have used them before. Also can get cashback from some sites from them.
