thanks… I remembered play this game more than 10 years ago

  • I'll have to get this!

  • Been waiting for this!

I remember going through RA2 years ago… loved both campaigns so much, I went out and bought Yuri's Revenge immediately after finishing the original missions.

I assume no CD Key is required for this. Email confirmation didn't have one.

The nostalgia is massive with this one, used to play this all the time.

  • +1

Does Origin publish a 'works on modern OS without hacking' version??

    • +1

Yes, some of the games have in the past come with DOS Box in for maximum compatibility

  • Lol… I remember playing this just for Emma Atkinson cutscenes …

  • +3

My god i put some hours into this back in the day. Think i was trying to play RA2 on a 486 at one point. And the joy of upgrading to a Pentium (1!)

We fired up the null modem cable, some bears and good times were had.

    +1

    • I remember playing RA1 on a Pentium processor already. Your CPU must be very old. :P

      • Or bad memory (not the computer one)..lol

    • +2

Ran like a dog on my Pentium I 166Mhz back the in day. You must have either been very desperate like I was or very patient to put up with the slideshow; I remember I would select a group of 20+ units and click somewhere to move them, and after a 6 second delay the units would acknowledge the command with their "Yes sir!" and actually start moving.

      • I upvoted your comment, yes, very desperate - it chugged

But the alternative was not gaming…..so - chug away!

    • +1

Was never too keen on inviting the local bears for gaming. After the Porridge Incident, things just got too awkward with them.

    • bundaberg drinker ay

    • You had me there for a while. Did you manage to get the bears names? Way cool!

Loved the C&C and RA series of games. Spent way too many hours playing them.
Who here remembers Dune ? I think that was the first top down mining/battle sim for PC.

    • +1

Dune !!!! I remember dune. Now we are going back lol. Bullets look like squares lol

    • +3

I remember sitting in front of the pc play it it till 6am :)

    • +3

I remember Dune too. The game is so good but the resolution was low and everything is a bit small. Do they come up with an upgrade version?

      • +3

There was Dune 2000 which was developed by westwood studios

        • +3

Followed by Emperor - Battle of Dune, also by Westwood

  • Anyone else having problems?
RA2 start screen shows all options but none can be selected
YR start screen has all options greyed out.
Both have to be killed off with task manager

None of my other origin games have a problem.

    • Mine fires up fine, but the display is like 4 concurrent windows.
Could exit the program after watching the cutscene, but the display is all funky.
Tried putting it in WinXP compatibility mode, but have not got it working yet. Will try some tweeks and let you all know if I can get it working.
      I am on Win10 Pro.

      • Yep, win 10 here as well
This and a few other annoyances are making me think of canning it and going back to win 7

  • +1

Haha I remember this one, I think its better than C&C 3.

  • Memories. Brilliant game that made you feel like you were playing in that world without the fancy graphics…

  • Great Deal! I got theme hospital free on origin about a year ago, loving the nostalgia!

    • +2

Missed that one ;( although that game already owes me hours of my life!

"Patients are reminded not to die in the corridors."

  • if you have a version of windows previous to win8 it should work fine but there are a lot of problems with windows 8 / 10. try the support section of xwis.net/forums for troubleshooting, although since windows 10 is fairly new you might have a bit of trouble unfortunately.

  • Almost hard to not have this already, given the price of the Complete Collection so regularly, really need to get back into them one day!

Found a guy who details how to fix the game to work on Win10. I just did the suggestions and it worked fine.
Going to try the patch as it is very laggy in game.
"There are a few things you'll have to do. After installing it, go to the folder you installed it to (default is C:\Westwood\RA2) find the following .exe's
Game.exe and gameMD.exe right click them, select properties, and under the compatibility tab select run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, also check off the box that says "run as administrator".
That alone will allow the game to run, but it will be pretty laggy in-game. To help with the lag find the .ini files in the same folder listed above, they are "ra2.ini and ra2md.ini" open them with notepad and under section titled [Video] add the following line"
    VideoBackBuffer=no
optionally you can also change your resolution to a higher one, as the game forces you to play on a lower resolution because its so old, but you can play on 1920x1080 if you monitor supports it. below is an example of my ra2.ini video section:
    ScreenWidth=1920
    ScreenHeight=1080
    StretchMovies=no
    VideoBackBuffer=no
One thing to note is, you cannot minimize once the game is loaded or it will crash. I'm not sure how to fix that yet.
Lastly, if you want even less lag in-game there is a third party patch to speed up in-game graphics, you can find it on the RA2 Online ladders website (xwis)
    http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/173459-graphics-patch…
The steps to apply that patch are located in that forum post, as well a a download to the patch itself.
Also as a last thing, in windows 10 the MS Xbox DVR app forces VSync to be turned on. I have a 144hz monitor and it was forcing my refresh rate to 60 which made the game feel sluggish.
If you don't use the Xbox app, you can remove it using powershell by opening powershell as an administrator and pasting in this line:
    Get-Appxpackage xbox | Remove-AppxPackage
This will allow the game to run in whatever your monitors refresh rate is set to. "

Make sure you download the graphics patch as it makes the game perfect

      • where is that patch?

        • its in the instructions above

    • Damn, Didnt work for me but thanks anyway.

      • Tried everything again and still no result I can get menu icons to work, but not how I want. Let me explain.
Screen is open, menu is there but nothing happens when I click directly on them
I move mouse off of them and click somewhere else and a seemingly random menu item activates.
i am yet to get the cursor in the right spot for play game.

        Any ideas?

    • Didn't work for me either :(

    • For those who are following the steps. The .ini files don't come up until you launch the game at least once.

  • I am having trouble with Windows 10 as well. Starts with EA screen and music keeps going …can't see anything else. in YR…somehow after long wait got intial screen, but no buttons work….let me know if any tweaks found…

    • Run in compatibility mode is probably the first thing you could try.

  • Just want to say this is a great game !!!!!!!!!!

    Better red than dead!

First RA one is still the best :)

where can I get a copy of Dune and the follow up versions?

The Tesla Coil and the Obelisk of Light (CC1) are two of the greatest builds in any rts game going around.

    • or use that chronosphere machine the allied side have to teleport 8 prism tanks into enemy base, game over haha :')

      • Lol…if I see 8 prism tanks in my base I'll just rage quit…

  • Best game ever, my whole childhood went into these games

Thanks so much for posting this. Love this game. Famous Yuri quotes:

    Yuri/Yuri Prime (RA2)

    Select:
    - Psychic ready.
    - Tell me your wish.
    - I know your thoughts.
    - Your mind is clear.
    - The mind is quicker than the eye.
    Move:
    - Yes, of course.
    - Predictable.
    - Thoughts received.
    - My command is your wish.
    Attack:
    - He belongs to us.
    - His mind is weak.
    - There is no resistance.
    - A new comrade joins us.
    - Look deeply into my eyes.

Bets game ever, apart from the previous Red Alerts, this was THE LAST RA game developed by Westwood Studios.

Since EA Games took over, they've fkd the franchise off to the blue planet and it hasn't been the same.

All other C&C squeals have been moderate failures.

    • Unfortunately their free to play "Command and conquer online" was cancelled :(

    • I agree. Westwood Studio was the bomb. Tiberium Sun was also pretty good. EA killed C&C. The only good one is C&C Generals

      • C&C Generals concept was a great idea. The leveling of the generals was great…
The game became a failure as EA's development was shoddy and it meant that running C&C Generals on the best gaming rig at the time gave you intermittent 30FPS on various scenes. It was for the better word, shit-coded

The voice acting was an abomination, they hired some idiot to mimic the Iraqi foot soldier's accent which sounded like a hobo on bad weed.

EA Games should stick to making FIFA, NBA and all other similar games as they just re-release them with a new roster and a new cover dvd. They're hopeless

        RIP Westwood Studios

  • thanks for this
    love this game.
so many hrs in RA2 while in school/uni..and then trying to connect p2p via modem connection with mates was killer

also people should look up modded maps - my fav was hail mary and bay of pigs IIRC

  • hmmm, downloaded RA2. installed. hit play. I get sound but screen is grey. can any one assist in a fix?

    • nvidia drivers. of course

  • +2

    Hell march - enough said

  • Hey guys to top this off. You can get Mental Omega expansion on of Yuri's revenge for more content http://mentalomega.com

  • I only really played CnC…loved it.

Does this have NOD Bikes? Because my entire strategy was based on those.

    • +1

RA is based on an alternate WW2, GDI/NOD are not part of the RA universe.

That saying, that units in RA2/3 are way better!

  • Yuri is such an arsehole.

  • LOL! Tanya's laugh…

    • a real smoker's laugh

  • Brilliant! Thanks OP :D

  • Assuming you must have Origin installed to install / launch the game?

  • Can I leave it in my origin library for another time of must I download it?

    • I think you can, I just click download and login and once I checked my 'order history' it is registered as if I'm purchasing it

  • how big is it to down load?

    • +1

      Download size: 1.54GB
      Size after install: 1.92GB

  • We should all play online together….ozb clan :)

    • Unfortunately gamespy network is no longer there and EA decided not to continue online multiplayer for RA2

westwood online was redirected to xwis in mid 2005, servers aren't quite as active anymore though sadly.

  • I loved this game as a child.

Yuri was so powerful, being able to mind control a laser tower and destroying / turning the base upon itself.

Also Chrono Troopers are the bomb. I wished I could of been one of those guys when I was a kid.

  • Remember playing this 15 years ago, best c & C series, Westwood should make more like red alert than the 3d stuff.

  • Anyone remember imperium Galatica 1? I played number 1 and 2 for hours on end. I have been playing number 2 again on the ipad.

  • Used to play this game in uni days..loved it!!

  • I remember playing Yuri online on game arena, hiding a big transport tank full of yuri, then rushing up. So much fun.
The online games lagged so bad, I remember playing games lasting hours coz as the unit number increased, so did the lag times… but was still so much fun. You would be eventually playing the game in ultra-slow-motion, still trying to outfox the enemy…

The RA2 introductory cinematic with the Russkis pouring into America's borders and smashing US landmarks is still as vivid in my mind as it was the day I saw it back in 2000. Used to stutter like mad on my 4x CD-ROM back in the day because it was being streamed off the disc but I would still sit through it just to see that then-unparalleled CGI and hear those badass Hell March 2 riffs.

Easily one of the best video game cinematics/intros of all time.

I also remember there was an initial batch of retail RA2 boxes that featured New York's WTC 1/2 (Twin Towers) on fire, which were recalled after a short amount of time on the shelves. You just don't get that kind of lore and intrigue with video game releases these days.

Still have the original RA2 Collector's Edition box and the pewter figurine of the Chrono Legionnaire that came with it (along with the Making of DVD and Soundtrack).

  • Holy shit, what a classic!!! #throwback!

  • Thanks!!!!!!11!1!!1!! :-)

  • Can I get it on steam…?

    • +1

This only redeems on Origin. Only recent C&C games are on Steam (2009 onwards).

  • Anyone tried the Mental Omega expansion for Yuri's Revenge?
It'll blow your mind. Took me forever to clock it (a week?).

Edit: oh wait, it's already mentioned

  • Sigh, tried all day to logon to Origin, no luck and now it's expired.. ohwell i am sure I have an old copy of it somewhere in a box.. :P

    • That's interesting… I thought you had a week or so until it ran out. Sorry about that
