Required iOS 9, but how? I thought the latest iOS is 8.4.1

    • +7

iOS 9 came out this morning, upgrade!

  • -1

app requires iOs 9 or later?

    • +2

iOS 9 came out this morning, upgrade!

      • +2

It should be mentioned in description/title to avoid confusion

        • +2

          Agreed..

  • +3

Maybe add to the description the minimum requirements for the app e.g iPhone 5S and higher…

    • +2

      updated thanks mate

Ok I've installed the app on iOS 9 for my iPhone 6. And enabled it in safari setting. So when I go to heraldsun.com.au in safari I still see ads?!?!! Is this working correctly? something ive missed?

  • Why does it need ios9 though? Does it rely on brand new features?
87% of iOS users are on ios8.

    • +4

Obviously because it uses new APIs in the webview.

  • Is ad blocking not available to the iPhone 5?

    • +2

not available coz it needs a 64 bit processor which is only available from 5S onwards.

      • +1

        no 32 bit support?

Whats a good alternative for iPhone 5 then? tried another in the appstore and it creates a VPN profile.

  • +1

    Does Crystal actually save bandwidth?

    • +1

theoretically it should, it would be weird to download image/flash and just to hide.

  • Just installed. Trying it now. Thanks.

  • +1

Any privacy concerns with the app? It says they can't view your content but anything else at all? Apple is usually good on this front as long as you don't have a silly iCloud password etc

    • +2

All it does is block HTTP requests. No different to using a host file. Nothing to be worried about.

  • +1

Isnt there an embedded feature with iOS9 that will do this like in safari? or am I mistake. I read stuff on this that IOS9 will allow ppl to block ads and speed up browsing/save data.

    • +3

This is what that is. Apple added the ability for third-parties to use APIs to block content from their webviews. But didn't actually make any blocking functionality themselves. Very open and unlike them.

      • +1

        Ahhh. thanks for clarifying.

Would be good if they can do the same for NFC. its been over a year and the technology in the iPhone 6 is still practically useless in AUS

  • +1

So is the basically the same as adblock?
But wont block stuff like youtube adds?
Is there anything that will block ads on youtube?

  • +1

Ok I've installed the app on iOS 9. And enabled it in safari setting. So when I go to heraldsun.com.au in safari I still see ads?!?!! Is this working?

  • +1

Works for me! Thanks very much, I didn't know about the new content blocking feature. Cheers.

  • I tried it on my phone, surprised to see that not only does it block ads in safari, it also blocked those banner ads from free versions of xe converter and speedtest.net. interesting, I wonder how this works.

  • upgrading ios9. Will try this. thanks

  • tfw you're still chilling with your 3gs

  • Because of this I just updated to iOS9. Thanks, but still some compatible issues. Mine is just iPhone 5.

  • Thank you for the free app OP!

Can't seem to get it to work on my iPhone 6+, tried uninstall/reboot etc. The blocklist version says 0 btw.

Edit: updated on wifi, all good now.

  • I was reading about how apple have allowed apps like this now. Was going to start researching a good app for my phone later…. Thanks for the freebie!!

  • I haven't upgraded to ios9 yet but when I check in the app store, it shows $2.99 so it is not free anymore.
Do I need to upgrade it first in order to get it for free?

  • Expired… Literally moments ago

  • Shows app for $2.99 not free.

  • damn, did I miss out :(

This is a pretty big deal, so deserves more than a passing mention on OzB!

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-17/apple-enables-ad-block…

The basic idea is that if a giant like Apple permits apps to implement ad-blocking then the mums-n-dads (whoever they may be) who would neither want to, nor know how to, jailbreak, will view ad-blocking as standard and legitimate behaviour.

If enough do so, then the entire "flash you are the 999,999th visitor flash click here flash" sub-industry will essentially collapse.

  • +1

Miss out after upgraded to IOS9, won't allow me to buy before upgrade.

  • +1

    not free anymore :(

  • I've installed a similar app '1blockr' which is free for the basic version. Tested and working great on sites like smh/the age.

  • -2

Same feature functionality are available from other apps (e.g. Adbl0ck) and it is free already.

  • Well done Dean,
Just saw an article on Venture Beat which mentioned your app. You must be killing it with this app.

  • Wow… well done Dean; your app is the number one paid app on the Aussie iTunes store at the moment! Congratulations!
