Apple iPhone 6 16GB Question

Hi guys,

Hope you're all doing well =)

My cousin is selling me his brand new Apple iPhone 6 16GB for $574 that purchased from Telstra.

I am looking at getting this phone for my dad as he has been using an Apple iPhone 4 16GB from the last 3+ years and it's now on verge of breaking (few issues with it have developed like loud speaker not working, constant random rebooting, touch screen not working at times etc.).

Do you guys think this is a good price for the iPhone 6 16GB for $574? Or should I wait and get my dad an Android phone like a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (he is not very tech-savy and mainly uses a few apps like WhatsApp, taking pictures, calls and sms . He already has an iPad and a retina MacBook).

Thanks,

PLA74

  • i believe most people on earth now think iphone with 16gb is too small.
i said most. some hardcore fans might say "i dont need that much storage, i dont put music on my phone, i dont take too much photos, i dont put movies, i just want to carry iphone"

I'm one of those hardcore fan.

      • I don't need that much storage
      • I don't put music on my phone
      • I take a lotttttt of photo for work
      • I don't put movies
      • I love my 16GB iPhone 5 :)
  • Yeah 16GB is a pain in the arse. You are almost guaranteed to be asked to export your photos/movies/delete apps to free up space before a firmware upgrade can install/download.

Get the 16GB and just add more memory when you need it.
Whoops I forgot its an iphone and you can only add more memory to Androids.

  • Thanks jkcat and erwinsie. I'm now looking at the 64gb/128gb models for him as he will be doing a lot of voice recordings as well.

Hey why not read careful what the OP said.

(he is not very tech-savy and mainly uses a few apps like WhatsApp, taking pictures, calls and sms . He already has an iPad and a retina MacBook

So 16Gb for a tech savvy app user isnt that great as the OP said, but in this case he's not.

Given the Iphone4 has lasted him for 5 years this wouldn't be too bad a buy given also he is used to the IOS/Mac system with his iPad and Retina Macbook. Changing systems will require a lot more thought for a non tech savvy user.

Now if he was already an Android user I would say the same, stay with what he is used to. Obviously he doesnt use all the bells and whistles.

Alternatively you can take his existing iphone4 to an Apple where they can replace it with a refurbed iPhone 4 for around $200, which usually has a new replacement battery, But for the extra $300 I would think the iphone6 is a relatively good deal. And you know it's history

EDIT given I was posting this and the extra info about voice recordings was added, I still think, unless he is doing a massive amount of recordings, that the 16GB would be ok. Voice files are not that memory intensive.

Also IOS9 apparently takes up less system memory so this would mean probably more memory avaialble than was on the iphone4 depending on what IOS he is using

    • Changing systems will require a lot more thought for a non tech savvy user.

Not as much as you think, and the way the OP's dad uses it, it would be basically the same.

When my comment is taken out of context, ie just the phone, I would also agree with you, but he is also an iPad user and has a Retina Macbook, so why would he bother unless changing at least the iPad as well

        • The way the OP's dad uses it would be basically the same. The macbook really has nothing to do with it, I use a macbook fine with my S6.

I have an ipad as well and for that reason the OP is better to stick with iOS as for me it can be annoying when the ipad can't do the same things as the S6.

        • @ozhunter: It would appear we are in sync. You do mention the S6, but this would appear to be well out of the range of options for the OP ($1K )

16gb is plenty for an older person/parent. Especially if they already aren't a heavy user and have a iphone 4 still (probably 8, 16 or 32gb).

I feel like the deal you are getting is pretty sweet. And your dad will love it.

    Dropbox, google drive etc.

  • Stick with iPhone and not android, I suggest you look into his existing phone and see how many GB he have used, Whatapps, photos and videos can take up all the space quickly.

  • iCloud Photo Library and Apple Music make it possible to get by with a 16GB iPhone. (Photos and music take most of the space on my phone.) If your dad is coming from an older 16GB iPhone, a newer 16GB iPhone can only be an improvement.
