  • How much does Qantas charge for using AmEx credit card?

one can also book via an Australian travel agent

      • -1

You won't get the cashback if you book via a travel agent.

        • +1

According to the offer Ts & Cs booking via a travel agent is fine. Don't know why the neggs as tonester is 100% correct

        • +1

          @ChickenTalon:

You must ask the travel agent to put your cc details in the booking so that Qantas is charging you directly not by swiping your card at the travel agent EFTPOS machine.

        • @isdnman:

so far always booked through flight center… they beat any price i show them by $1 and have always waived my cc fees…
In relation to paying with my cc and not through the eftpos machine.. Ive done it on a web portal link they sent me…

does that technically get processed under qantas billings??? so therfore I should be fine right :S

or is it still processed through flight center's internal billings

        • @anthonyaaa:

When I booked my last flights via an online travel agent the Amex statement listed the agent not airline but it might vary

        • @Hoju: sigh… quiet the gamble

    • +4

Purchase a $50 voucher and part pay with voucher and pay no CC fee.

  • I think these two are targeted - they don't show up on the Amex Connect page unless you log in…

    • Agree, I'm not getting the Qantas one at all. Perhaps they don't want me buying Qantas flights on my Velocity Amex…

      • are you logged into amexconnect?

        • Yep. Followed the link, which asked me to log into amexconnect. Did that, then when I click 'enrol now' it loops around twice, then opens a tab showing my account and all offers, of which there is no Qantas. Have not come across this before. BTW, Body shop was in my offers.

        • @carwashhair:

tried link again once logged in?

        • @tonester: yep. No dice.

        • @carwashhair:

receive $50 back last time? maybe it's like with harvey norman?

        • @tonester: the easiest way to tell if they are targeted offers is log out and see what is on the main page :)

        • @Chuppa:

moet hennessy doesn't appear on main page but no comments about it being targeted :)

        • @tonester: The Qantas offer isn't available for Velocity/Virgin branded AmEx issued cards.

Unsure why the Body Shop offer isn't public as this appears available for all. Sometimes they get added to the Amex Connect page a few days after the offer starts.

Just trying to determine if there are any other exclusions apart from Qantas not being available to Velocity branded AmEx issued cards.

The moet hennessy deal is on the front page of the Amex Connect webpage without being logged in, 4 rows down bottom left.

      • I think you may be right. I don't have the offer either for Velocity Amex, but I do for bank-issued Amex which earns QFF points. Last time around I received the offer, and used it, on both cards.

  • Both links works for me, though I have no plan to buy from Qantas. Mine is CBA Amex, btw.

  • I also had Haighs, Rebel, Pet Circle, Dymocks and a few others that I didn't bother signing up for when I logged in today.

  • +3

Could be useful for those redeeming FF points (and having to pay $800 in "taxes" that Qantas charge to go return to London).

    • Classic Rewards?

      • +1

        Is there any other kind?

        • I remember when I booked tickets twice to HK I didnt pay any taxes, but it uses more points but still better than paying.

  • Is this valid for Qantas store purchases too?

    • +1

      on eligible Qantas flights
Gift Card, Hotel, Cars, Activities and package purchases are excluded.

      • So flights only. Thanks

        • As far as I know, all of these statement credits always explicitly exclude Gift Cards.
So far from my own experience and many other reported experiences by other Ozbargainers, gift card purchases have always resulted in getting the credit.
This was also the case for the previous Qantas statement credit offer.

        • @illumination:

yes, you are right, they don't know what we are buying, they just know the purchase makes on qantas.com.au

  • Wow. Thank you. Time to check Qantas prices to LAX for Frb next year.

Says "at an Australian travel agency". Wonder if that includes IWTF?

    • If booking by agents, must tell agent to have the airline charge the ticket not the agent themselves. Otherwise you won't get cashback.

  • +1

If you're taking advantage of the Qantas cashback. make sure you register here to get triple points earn for the flights.

Just bought $700 worth of gift vouchers. Will post if the $100 cash back is received.

    • +1

Also, you can get 5 points for every dollar spend on gift voucher until 31/12
      http://www.qantas.com.au/christmas/

      • +1

That's right. $100 cash back + bonus points + avoid CC fees = an attractive offer for flights I was going to need to purchase anyway. Let's hope the $100 comes through!

        • +7

Just got the email. Looks like it works

'Congratulations, a credit is on its way. Thank you for making an eligible purchase and qualifying for your Amex Offer. Your $100 credit for spending $700 or more at Qantas will be issued to your registered Card account. Credits are generally issued within 5 business days upon completion of your eligible transaction.'

        • @vetopower:

          wow thats nice

          Do you do $100*7?

        • @fomal: 2 x $200 + 1 x $300

        • I thought it said gift vouchers were excluded, and from the terms and conditions it sounds like only flights?

        • +1

@surviv0r: The T&Cs always say it excludes GCs. Now that I think about it, I am actually struggling to think of the last time an AMEX statement offer did NOT work with GCs…

      • How long are gift vouchers valid?

        • +1

~Qantas Flight Gift Vouchers are redeemable for one-way or return Qantas domestic or international flights departing Australia. Valid for bookings within 12 months of the voucher issue date. Only one voucher can be redeemed per booking. Please read full terms and conditions when you select your voucher.

          http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/voucher-terms-condi…

        • @tlam: Not valid for taxes on FF redemptions?

        • @tlam:

So if we bought vouchers like vetopower did above we could only use one at a time per booking? I've got $6-700 flights I need to buy soon but was hoping to chuck all of it on gift cards.

        • @Shadowsfury: Only one voucher per booking. If voucher's value is more than the cost of the booking, you get it refunded, but apparently it takes ages. Best to get a voucher less than the booking amount.

        • @vetopower:

          Thanks for replying.

I can deal with waiting for a refund as long as it's definitely coming.

EDIT: Was just reading the T&C on gift cards, seems like it isn't an actual refund but rather a new voucher will be issued to you for the remaining amount. Which is quite different from a regular refund if you don't plan on flying QF again soon.

        • +1

@Shadowsfury: Oh yes, I shouldn't have used the word 'refund'. Apologies for the confusion. You are issued with a new voucher with the remaining value — and it takes some time to come.

    • Good luck! :)

    • Cheers vetopower, thanks for the post. Just did the same and got an email from AMEX straight away for $100 credit.

  • +1

Anyone happen to have manual links? Can't enrol wih my DJs AMEX (keen on the Body Shop one) :(

  • Man this is tempting. So I can get the gift vouchers, $1400 worth for $1200. Plus 7000 points… Plus the 1400 on my Amex card.

Hmmmm… as usual the "Excludes Gift Cards" clause just doesn't seem to apply

  • Any way to get both the $100 off and the maximum points from 5ppd on gift cards for a flight that would only cost about $760?

Getting anything more than a $50 gift card would push the remaining amount below $700, meaning I wouldn't hit the required threshold for the $100 since it needs to be in a single transaction. However I would save on CC fees even with a $50 gift card.

    • Looking at the T&C it seems that this one can be multiple transactions - although I think this is the first time I've come across the option for it to be multiple, usually its in one transaction isn't it?

"in one or more transactions, between 2/12/15 and 31/12/15 to receive one $100 credit."

  • I didn't get it.

But I am wondering if my still valid 20% of qantas for three flights amex deal is getting in the way

    • Oh yea I remember that. Did you get 20% off ANY of your flights yet? Interested in using it.

  • +2

Choo choo. All aboard the American express!

  • When I click on the Enrol button, it takes me to my Amex card, and the offers tab, but it says no offers can be found for the card. Anybody in a similar situation?

    • Is this for the Qantas offer? What type of card do you have? It's not available for Velocity/Virgin branded cards.

      • Yes the Qantas offer, and I have the Qantas Discovery Card.

        • Hmm that's weird, I and others have a Qantas Discovery card and it's available. I did have to click the 'SHOW MORE' page down link to load more offers though as there were so many listed.

        • @hamza23:
Under the Offers and Places tab, I'm only getting "There are currently no new offers available for this Card." and "You currently have no saved or redeemed offers. Click on the Available Offers tab to see the offers available for your Card."

Is that where it is appearing for you? I tried The Body Shop one as well, and the same thing happened.

        • +1

          @bern1992:

Yeah you are in the right place. I have 19 offers available/saved. You should at least have all the public offers such as these in there and many more.

Click on the 'email us' link on your account summary page and then go compose message and ask AmEx why you don't have any offers at all which are listed here: http://amexconnect.com.au/ . It sounds like some issue with your card.

        • @bern1992: Is yours a supplementary card? I find that no offers ever appear for supplementary cards - but enrolling via manual links works fine.

        • @illumination: Nope, I'm the sole cardholder. Only thing I can think is that it's a very new account, only a couple of weeks since its been open, haven't even had a statement yet.

I've sent them an email, will report back.

        • @bern1992:
I am in the same boat. Just got my Amex Card last week after applying for it and I get no offers. No matter what link I click on it says I have no offers available to me.

My Amex card is the new Essential one and I am yet to make a purchase on it yet.

        • @Endless Winter: Today I got a regular Amex Connect email newsletter that had the offer in it, but I clicked on it and it says the offer is no longer available. Surely they haven't had 10000 registrations overnight.

        • @bern1992:

What happens if you try the manual registration link: https://offerenroll.americanexpress.com/enroll/EnrollmentSit…

          That wasn't available yesterday.

        • @bern1992:

Hmm actually I get that same message when trying any of my cards now, but a couple hours ago it worked, maybe they have ended it.

        • @bern1992:

In regards to your card not getting any offers in your account, it seems that new AmEx issued cards take a while before they start receiving offers, hopefully next time they appear and AmEx can give you a proper answer or get it going.

        • @hamza23: I did send the email to them last night, still waiting for the response from them. Maybe I can guilt trip them into applying the offer to my account.

    • I have the same problem! My card is a David Jones American Express Card. I had to use a manual enrolment link for the Dymocks one.

  • available on my CBA Amex, but not Gold by Amex

  • Can anyone post manual link for apple online offer?

  • Am I missing something here but for Qantas spend $700 get $100 back however if this is say a return international flight you will pay $60 in credit card fees?? I know they all charge these now but normally there's a way around it. Seems expensive.

    • +3

Buy a $50 voucher with your AMEX and then make your flight booking with your voucher and pay the remainder with AMEX. They waive the credit card fee when a voucher is used.

  • +2

Qantas offer: "Unfortunately the maximum number of Card Members have already enroled in this offer. Please visit http://www.amexconnect.com.au for other fabulous offers."

    • Wow you're right.. that's actually really fast. 10000 cards in less than 48 hours!

      • I snoozed and loozed (sp) :(

  • Does anyone know if these credit card rebates work with cash rewards?

I have bought a couple of things on Amex through david jones and dan muprhys after going through cash rewards but haven't gotten the email cash back email.

    Thanks.

    • That won't effect cashback, best to contact CR to chase it up manually.

      • Thanks for the response. I worded my question poorly. I was actually wanting to know if the cash rewards impacted the amex rebate. I haven't gotten an amex rebate email regarding either Dan Murphys or David Jones. Usually the emails come through within minutes.

        • Ah the other way around, no that definitely won't effect it either. American Express is just looking at the merchant and the spend amount on the spot when you purchase.

  • Qantas cashback question. Has anyone received the $100 cashback when using their AMEX to pay for frequent flyer redemption fees?

I've paid $549 in redemption fees for flights and I was wondering if I should purchase a $200 voucher to take me over the $700.

    • +1

Who knows. I got mine for the gift card which in theory is excluded. Probably one of those things you can only try and see

      • Well, I've spent over $700, but some of that was in ¥CNY because of flight originating from Shanghai. So it's definitely not counting everything "qantas"

Are you able to post the exact retailer description that appears on your bank statement for the voucher transaction? That way i can see if it matches the retailer description for the AUD fees

        thnx

        • +1

Yep I bought a $1000 gift card and it came up on my Amex as Qantas Air Australia Australia Mascot 2020

        • +1

          @Hoju:

thanks mate, that's helpful. I think they might count towards it, but certainly not the foreign amounts. They come up as: QANTAS AIR CHINA CHINA

The Australian txns come up as: QANTAS AIR AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA AU
Where as australian flight bookings come up as QANTAS AIRWAYS LIMIT MASCOT

might take the plunge and get a $200 voucher to take me over $700

EDIT: just received my email Congratulations on taking up your Qantas Offer sweet, it worked. Many thanks.

        • +1

          @ChickenTalon:
