    I was just about to install the app and try for free Ham at lunchtime, then I saw what the app accesses when installed on your phone. Basically everything.
    No thanks Uber.

      Oh, You're one of THOSE people.

      What are they going to do? - Tell me without some bullshit answer.

      • +2

        I would prefer if they would tell me what are they planning to do with all access. And "We might use it in future" doesn't count.

        • +6

          Camera I used to take photos of your credit card for easier registration. SMS to read your verification code. Telephone to generate a unique device ID and call the driver. Contacts to access emergency contacts and split fair. Location is obvious.

          @Autonomic:

          Exactly, this - People are stupid.

      • -1

        Oh, you're one of THOSE people that think that it's perfectly fine for every company to have complete access to everything in your device; including but not limited to a) full access to your microphone b) full access to your data (pictures,messages, contacts) c) GPS data

        • +2

          Who gives a f*** what they have access to?
          Are they going to listen to YOUR conversation out of what, their 1m+ users?

        • +3

          @Catalystic:

          Yes, I must know the secrets to Shawn's maggot.

        • -6

          @Catalystic:

          No, they just on sell the data to the NSA for mass surveillance.
          Then again, they probably already own you.

        • -1

          @tommyc: Yeah sure, - Now tell me, how is that effecting me if they have my data?

          You have a passport? - Oh no, they know all your details - Going to not use any banks?
          Doctors?
          etc?

          Everyone has data

        • @Catalystic:

          It's well over 10 million, but he's special so obviously they will listen to his conversations.

        • +3

          @Drew22:

          hahah - well it's such a joke.. i dont know why people think they're so special and are going to be targeted.

          Your ISP has more details than uber has access to.
          Phone Provider

          The list goes on.

        • @Catalystic:

          But you don't get it damn it! HE IS SPECIAL!

        • -2

          @Catalystic:

          Being complacent like you are is the issue. Next we'll have blanket surveillance by security agenci- oh wait….

          If you actually believe that there is an individual who seeks out another individual at random to listen in on them you are a fool. You clearly have no idea how mass surveillance works and it is ignorant people's opinions such as yours that let this type of questionable behavior go unnoticed.

      Run MIUI on your phone (or better yet, buy a Xiaomi phone and choose, specifically, every single thing that an app really gets access to (or not) when you first run it.

      • Or, App Ops on any other Android phone

        • +1

          Or just use Android Marshmallow that has the finished version.

    • Not Uber's fault.
      Complain to Google/Android and/or Apple.

    • Can't you deny those access??? What phone are you using???

    • +2

      Just for the record, app permission access does not in ANY way translate to what personal data the app developer collects. It's simply Google telling you what the app NEEDS to work.

      Most of them are pretty self explanatory, especially in Uber's case. Without those permissions, Uber can't provide you with a service. Simple stuff, really.

      I don't even know why Google insists on telling you what permissions it needs, considering it's just technical info of no use the the consumer. Apple doesn't do it, and their app store works out fine for them despite the same apps needing the same permissions on both Apple and Android.

      Stop being paranoid, what makes you so special to these companies anyway? Oh, that's right - nothing. Live your life, and worry less. An app isn't going to destroy your life, mate.

      • Permission to access an app can mean many thing.

        As you've said, it can be as simple as accessing that particular aspect of the hardware/software specifically when the app is being used.

        On the other end of the scale, permission can and often does include full access to all parts of the device at all times. Even areas that are not required for the use of the app in question.

        Even reading the EULA's of many app's does not give you an accurate picture of what the app is really doing.

    Uber has got a 'leg' in the meat business now. hmmm

    Here's hoping no one uses this as a prank

  • 450g? that's a pretty small ham :/

    • +2

      Well.. it is free.

      • +3

        These two lines echo almost exactly a conversation an ex-g/f and I had in the bedroom, with her speaking first.

  • -3

    Oh, it's anti-Sydney day is it?

  • +4

    Has anyone got the ham request? All I'm getting is the requesting loading screen.

    • Me too, only loading and then a try again message.

      • It just says requesting for a few minutes then says try again

  • So this is why Uber Global is so slow today? They're delivering all the hams.

  • -1

    I'm up to 7 hams so far. Anyone else scored yet?

    • -1

      What suburb are u in

          @hetzjagd: Don't be mad. I'll give you one ham if you like? Or I can donate all seven…

  • +1

    I just got one (en route) after an hour of pressing the button wondering if it was a joke. Good luck everyone:)!

  • wow, going ham!!!

  • ahhh man of all the things to have missed. I just ran outside and got to some wifi by about 1:52pm but it said "try again soon" for any location I pointed to on the map after selecting Ham. I suspect they ran out?

  • They've just posted on Facebook to say they're all outta ham! Hope some of you managed to get one :)

    • What's the group they post to? I had a look just now but there's a few to choose from, even if you type in Uber Canberra

      • It was on the verified Uber page - the one with about 3 million likes

  • +3

    I'm voting this down as I spend two hours getting nowhere.

    • +1

      I have a spare ham if you need it….

  • Nah, I'll be fine
