  • What are their premiums like compared to their competitors?

Is 10% off cheaper than the others?

  • +4

SCTI are one of the cheapest in AUS. I have used them many times and claimed with no fuss. They have won the CANSTAR Travel Insurance 5 star Award for Outstanding Value in International Travel Insurance 7 years in a row and have a 4.7 rating on product review.

    • Did you make any claims on lost/damaged items by any chance?

In their claims section it says you need a valuation done within 12 months and prior to losing your item? What exactly will they take as a 'valuation'?

  • +1

Used them once and had my 1st ever travel insurance claim, which was handled quickly and without out fuss.
Definitely will use them on my upcoming trip.

  • I've got a trip coming up, anyone have experience using credit card insurance, anz black card in particular? Will I be sacrificing anything over a cover like this? I noticed the excess is a bit highe, but that's about it.

    • I've used the credit card insurance before, the international trip was $20k total and we had the whole anount refunded which was awesome with a 2-3 week turn around from application. Only had to pay the excess of $100. Atleast i didnt need to pay extra to have the insurance so I saved there. No need to sign up for these type of insurance deals, if your bank already gives you complimentary insurance with your card.

Yep, you will be sacrificing some cover over something like this. Honestly, read the PDS of SCTI then ANZ Black and you will see the difference, it would be quite large. I haven't compared it with ANZ Black but have compared thoroughly with AMEX Plat and SCTI won hands down, this was when I had to make a large claim with SCTI but also was eligible for insurance with my AMEX Plat.

Thanks for the feedback, I actually had the PDS open for both anz black and Travel insurance direct the other day and was surprised that the anz cover(underwritten) by qbe actually had higher cover limits, albeit with higher excess. I guess that's why I was asking if any had experiencing claiming with cc as I hope I'm not missing anything thing.

  • Currently in the middle of a theft claim with them. Not impressed by the email I received and the way it was written, questioning my statements. I understand they need to be thorough and will hold judgement until the claim is processed.
They want receipts for everything, which is difficult if you pay cash and the items aren't ones you'd ever return

    • Either go with a well known name or run the risk.

How much more well named do you want?

        • Anyone can win canstar, they hand those things out like lollies.

@Mahogany Granger: Just no pleasing some people.

        • +1

@dazzywazzy: No so, Canstar are known for this. While SCTI may well be good and in your case valid, relying on Canstar ratings isnt necessarily the way to judge them.

As for Product review, its worth reading all the reviews. Many say like for a number of providers, that they are happy with the service, but then say they haven't made a claim. Claims resolution and settlement would be the real reason you buy.

@dazzywazzy: Just trying to help you dude, its your hard earned money at the end of the day. All the best.

@RockyRaccoon: word of mouth trumps all, if I hear a friend or family member recommend or not recommend the after sales service of a company, then I will take note and refuse to support that company or atleast consider it a "con" before making my final decision. That's why I read the comments on this site before hitting the buy button, which is the beauty of this site, because people share their experiences so you don't have to suffer. Take most gearbest products for instance.

        • Everyone has won an award and every seems to be number 1. I always take these awards with a grain of salt and do my own research/ comparisons!

    • Absolutely sorry to hear the situation you're in, however you have to see it from the point of view from an Insurer, if they just took the word of every claim that you paid cash for something, imagine the dishonest people out there that would simply rort the system and essentially increase premiums for everyone else?

I've had this happen with one claim previously, was only about $150 cash which I couldn't claim (taxi to and from airport) but from that day forward when overseas it's card for everything that I think I might want to claim back if something went horribly wrong.

    • +3

I've had to claim theft with SCTI previously. I found it really easy. I only needed to provide proof of purchase (receipt) and a police report. Thus proving that I owned the item, and that it was stolen.

Do you really expect them to give you money for something that you can't prove you ever owned to begin with? Do ANY insurers pay out for things without with proof? I haven't heard of any.

      • No but I don't expect them to say "well where were your camera and phone?" Which were not claimed for when our car was broken into overseas.

    • Just wondering (if you don't mind disclosing) what was the items stolen?

Do you have anything that can support your claim? Packaging? Accessories? Warranty card?

With some insurers, if you tell them that you don't have the receipt, but are able to provide some sort of evidence that you actually had the item, they can consider it.

    • I lost a connection and 1 piece of luggage (loaded with gifts). As soon as I settled I gave them a call from overseas to inform about the situation. Once I got here I provided the details required (flight details & receipts/statements) and I got the money without a hassle. I am buying them again for a 4th time.

  • There is no blanket answer to the question of which TI to use unfortunately. Apart from reviews and Choice magazine etc, it is important to read every word of the PDS of those that you are considering, and that includes cc cover to see if it suits your particular situation. It's very tiresome, but good to know if say your older relo get really sick or dies and you need to be some place urgently and just started a 6 week trip and then after the funeral, you want to go back to your hols.

  • Just off the top, who is the underwriter of this SCTI. The Choice mag states that the FOS claims are best resolved in the claimants (you and me), favour with Allianz.

    • Just read Choice mag, and SCTI is their own underwriter. They have a fairly high level of disputes (Allianz has the least). And, most of those are decided in the applicants favour. So, they do challenge us on claims apparently.

  • How does this compare to insureandgo with the 20% off Groupon coupon (groupon20)?

  • Where can I find what excesses are payable on the policies issued by SCTI? I've looked on the website but to no avail.

    • I just did a quote and it's on the quote page.

  • Handbag with all it contained and another bag of clothing from a vehicle that was broken into at a park.

    • interesting scanario you have. not sure how i would go around that one anyway.

i mean not much you can do other than list out all your items that were stolen, and see what they wanted to do.

like you said earlier, no one would keep receipts of clothes, or makeup in a handbag, etc.

  • Thankyou Dealgood99

  • Can anyone recommend a travel insurer with respect to potential terrorism. What I mean by this is that we have a trip to Bali in May and would like to know if any insurers would cover a reimbursement in cost if the travel advisory to Indonesia gets upgrade to a "do not travel"?

    • I've checked the PDS of all the top insurers, none of them pay out for terrorism, tsunamis etc etc. Put yourself in their position I guess, if 2000 people died and they had to pay the death sum on say 1000 people, they might go broke. It's unfortunate for us but they do have a business as well so it goes both ways. I'm not a rep, just seeing the glass half full side.

  • Is there an option to have no excess because some other insurance companies have an option to waive it.
