220

Hi Guys,

I was in the JB Hi Fi Store, Looking for a another Macbook for myself. Signs were posted everywhere that they had 10% off Computers. The sales staff pretty much told me that it was including the Apple Mac's but the sign did clearly say Excludes Apple Mac's. After asking him again to clarify that i was getting 10% off the Mac he then went and confirmed the order for my Mac. So pretty much i got a ripper deal.

Macbook Pro 15" rrp $2199 i got it for $1979.10.

Also got AppleCare for $400.00 as to $579.00.

So if you look at it I think I got a Ripper of a Deal!

MOD: Nibs comments here that apples are not discounted, and it was probably a mistake by the worker. Hence take the original post with a grain of salt.

"Sry Guys, I work at JB in the IT section.
The person who sold you the Mac was mistaken and you got a sweet deal out of it, but the 10% does not apply to Mac."

The sale ad here: http://www.jbhifi.com.au/ specifically says it excludes Apple Mac. Mistake?

  • +2

Well thats what i thought it was 10% off Computers but the sales staff did say it was 10% off the Mac's Aswell. I defiantly got the deal as i'm on my new mac right now.

    • Any chance you could post a scanned copy of the Receipt?

  • If you got it, well done!

ohhh, ohh, can i neg it cause no matter what you do to a mac, it will never be a bargain? :D

    • Can not believe at those prices ( with$A high) the 'new' range is only provided with Core 2 duos! WTF duzn't Steve Jobs realise the reality distortion field won't work on Intel cpu comparisons!!

      • -1

Where've you been? The new range has i5's and i7's.

    • Macs have a higher up front cost, but a lower over all cost, or cost of ownership as they say. Plus they have high resale values.

And IMHO offer a much more enjoyable experience.

      • Just curious as to how you come up with the notion that Macs have a "lower over all cost"…?

By all accounts, they seem exorbitantly expensive.

I like macs, I have 3 of them but to think they're not more expensive is just fantasy. They only have a higher resale value because they sell for more in the first place, if you look at the rate of depreciation, they're as bad as PC's, except for a $$600 laptop if you lose 50% of the value you're down 300, whereas for the macbook at 1300 you're down 650. Yeh you've sold it for more but you've also lost more.

And what overall cost are you talking about? This is just the same BS everyone paddles, care to show me your reasoning?

  • 10% is approx the edu discount, they may well be putting it through like that, there are a few places that will match edu discount (even if you aren't a student). I was in DJs today trying to haggle a good price and the guy offered me student discount rate (I'm not a student).

    • edu discount has long been under 10%, its only 6.7% or less in most cases. and not to say you have to spoof as a student.

  • I just checked on the Edu store on the apple webpage and it looks like its even better than edu. For the macbook pro i got the edu store is $2299.00 when jb was doing it for $2249.10

  • It depends on the model.
A 17" MBP is $2599 on educational discount.
If only they can let tight asses like me get a 10% on the educational discount.

    • I just called up the store then and was told that there is 10% off the Apple Mac's. I asked again and the girl confirmed that the promotion is not listed anywhere and is a store by store basis. She also commented that if i was to bring a better price then she would beable to beat it if not match it.

10% off is just not a bargain.

I have never gotten less than a 10% discount by negotiation alone.

That and if you use a 5% discount on wish cards and buy from dick smith you can get 15% off.

      10% is the most you will ever get off a mac, other than if you are an apple employee. 10% is the resellers markup so any less and they literally don't make any money;

      • Are you serious?
So if you're an Apple employee, you can buy Apple stuff, then resell it back to JB Hifi and both parties will make better profit?

eg. an Apple item "X" costs $100.
Employees can get it for +10% off. So maybe 20% off = $80.
Employee then sell it to JB Hifi for $85.
He/ she gets $5 profit from selling 1 item.
JB Hifi saves $5 for 1 item from buying off employee instead of straight from Apple.
        ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

        • do you really think a big shop just have 20% margin?

        • the problem is that apple employees can only buy for their personal use, so no, they won't be able to resell to JB.

      • I worked in electronics retail for 4 years.

At the stores i haved worked at the markup on a macbook pro has been 13.3-14.2% at different times. Macbooks and imacs have been 10.4%-11.7%

Either way i have always been able to negotiate at least 10% off.

And as i said, use that in combo with 5% off wish cards and thats 15% off.

        • so 10% off isn't a bargain but 15 is? My figures were slightly off, (the figures you quoted don't put the margin much above the 10% I said) but the point remains that mac resellers don't have much room to move when it comes to discounting. In other areas of retail it's not uncommon for products to have a 200-300% markup (or more) by the retailer, which is why they can have a '50% off sale' and still be making money.

If then, as you say, the maximum markup a reseller has on a MBP is 14.2% then I would have to say that you're not often going to do better than 10% off. In which case I WOULD call this a bargain. In the years since I've been buying macs I have not once seen a retailer advertising anymore than 10% off and even this is getting rarer. JB used to do it all the time but now their '10% off laptop' sales always exclude apple.

          • @sonictruth: vote revoked anyway as it doesnt match the guidelines

    • As with everything apple, perception is a bit skewered. I agree 10% is not a bargain, but most people are voting for the discount's rarity rather than the actual amount.

If I was in the market for an apple product I would be delighted with a deal like that. Maybe when the iPad comes here….
