Free Meraki MX Firewall for Selected IT Professionals (Approx $2056 Normally)

60

Everyone already has their Meraki AP and switches.. So now they are giving their firewall for free…. To selected IT people.

You get an MX64 with a 3yr Advanced license, typically around $2k worth (or more if you like paying RRP). These are good for around 50 or so users and include the usual assortment of enterprise firewall goodies in an easily digestible web-managed form.

The website will explicitly state the rules, but in a nutshell:
* Be an IT person working for a company. Company cannot be a distributor, reseller, consultant, or such.
* Have responsibility for your company's network in some way.
* Use your company's email + shipping address
* Attend a webinar (they have these in an AEST friendly timeslot now)
* Call up and confirm your details with their sales people.
* Only one device of each type per person and organisation (i.e. only one MX64).

You can also get a switch and AP if you have not gotten them already by attending the relevant webinars and meeting the above criteria.

After the 3 years, the device will effectively become a paperweight.. But a nice looking one. You can of course buy more license time, but it's quite expensive.

YMMV, but I have gotten every device now (actually 2 AP's because they shipped an AP in addition the switch last time by mistake - and honoured it).

      • 10:00 am Tuesday, Pacific Time (PT) is 3:00 am Wednesday, in Sydney, 3am? Really?

  • Yeah I can't find any info on how to claim or join a webinar

  • what is the number to call and confirm, because i have attended their webminars but havent got any AP or switches.

    • You have to call up the account manager they assign to you individually.. The details will be in the "thanks for participating" email you get after the webinar.

  • i have received the AP and switch so this looks good however I can't find an AEST webinar for security. The only ones i found are BST and PDT which are 1.00am/3.00am here. Am I missing something?

    • Yeah I attended one earlier in the week at 10am.. They might only do one every few weeks. But TBH I'd probably even do the 1am one for this gear. Their firewalls are nice.

  • It says attendees receive an AP.. do you also get the firewall later?

    • I think that's generic text. I have a switch and the MX on the way. Free switches and firewalls are recent.

      • Can't find the registered Meraki link, can you post the direct link for register? thanks.

  • I have a couple of these ap's already really good to use.

The sales ppl can be annoying but it's worth it if your patient

Wow some people are lazy, I just registered for one of the webinars and it took all of thirty seconds to find the right section and complete the required fields.

    • It all says "Qualified attendees receive a free Meraki access point', none mention MX64?

      • -3

Oh, is the free access point not good enough?

This post is about the Meraki MX Firewall not AP, right?

    • Was yours the security webinar? If so, what time?

  • The webinar was on at 10am this morning. I signed up thinking it was the free AP still. I have no use for this at work (I did for the AP). You get an email after the webinar with a phone number to call and confirm shipping address.

    • Hi may I ask 10am PDT is sydney time? how long will the webinar last?

  • Tax and legal wise, is the device yours or will it be given to the organization you work for?

    • not taxable as there is no receipt.

      • What, is this how it works?

I just assumed that because they'd be claiming the production cost(s) as a lost, your company (or yourself) would have to maybe count it as income when it's transferred to you.

    • I suppose it's up to you. If there's no work benefit, then use it at home.

For me, I already have 4 x MX64's and 1 x MX100 at work so it's quite handy to have one in the drawer.

I will sign up again using my home business to grab another set for home, but realistically I don't see if there will be much benefit. I already have a cisco catalyst switch, and an AC wifi router.. But I might turn the router into AP only mode and take advantage of the better features..

      • That's awesome I guess.

As with things like tax, do you have to declare it as income?
This is about all I could find relating to that question…

(You do not have to declare) rewards or small gifts such as cash birthday presents (however, gifts may be taxable if they are large amounts or you receive them as part of a business-like activity or in relation to your income-earning activities as an employee or contractor).

        • No.. lol. It's a sample.

  • Actually I really need this firewall for comparison and practice due to work related, but 3:00am…..:(

Where's your dedication? I suppose you could open the conference and then go back to bed. The UK one at 1am, which isn't too bad.

      Airtasker?

  • Couldn't be f**ked… times were always after midnight.
