  • How many plants you could grow on this size of garden bed?

    • +1

as many as you can fit in 120(W) x 90(L) …this would be great for herbs, small vegie patch etc

similar (identical?) unit to this is now $52.44 at masters

might grab a couple thanks op

I have the Masters one back from when they were $49. Colour-bonded they may be, but Colorbond they are not. The powdercoat is crap, oxidised in no time, but apart from that does the job.
Aldi's price is a little more reasonable at least.

        • thanks for that. i didnt consider that at all and just assumed it was colorbond quality material….
does anyone know if aldi's are similar / better?

        • +2

@franco cozzo: I've had two from Aldi sitting in the weather for a couple of years now and they look no different to the day I started using them.

        • @dirtybird: cool…sounds reassuring!

How many plants you could grow on this size of garden bed?

      975,232 blades of grass.

      • +3

I'd love to know how you calculated that

        • +40

I went outside and counted them.

        • +3

I'd love to know how you calculated that

Easy enough to reverse engineer his calculation.

          120(W) x 90(L) = 108 square cm.

He stated 975,232 blades in 108 square cms.

He assumed there's ≈ 9,029 blades in each square cm of grass.

          @PainToad:

          120(W) x 90(L) = 108 square cm.

          lol… back to school…

@jv: Maybe he thought it was a doll house miniature garden bed at 120mm x 90mm.

What is this? A garden bed for ants?

    • +3

Depends on the type of plant. We grow about 52 bulbs of garlic, 16 stalks of corn, 6 eggplants, 4 indeterminate tomatoes, 6 broccoli/cauliflower, 10 cabbage. Not on the same bed of course. Then fill up the spaces with herbs. We don't fill the bed with garden soil either, we do it lasagne style. Chook poo, hay, garden soil, compost, mulch. Top up every season.

      • +12

        That lasagne sounds disgusting.

      • By 4 tomatoes, do you mean 4 tomato plants? That's heaps of (profanity) tomatoes from a small plot!

    • I have 2 of these and have just grown about 10 broccoli in one garden and 10 cauliflower in the other.
In the past have grown capsicum, tomatoes, silver-beat, lettuce etc, not a bad bed, but need a lot of soil.

Doesn't look very comfortable to sleep in.

Ugh gardening sale at Aldi? There goes my budget.

  • Looks like it's exactly the same as this one that sells for $75

  • I can highly recommend this one. I picked one up last year and it's going well. Got some basil, rosemary, chilli and spring onions in there. Make sure you pick up at least 100L of soil as I remember using at least 4 bags to fill it.

    • +4

It takes about 1/3 of a cubic metre…

Might be better off getting bulk soil from a garden centre and using their free trailer hire.

  • I got some last year and the year before that. Still going great.

  • Yeah these are great. I returned my overpriced pots from bunnings and bought 3 of these last year to plant some herbs.

  • there are too small

    • Buy more than one?

    • That's a relative thing. I've seen smaller and I've seen large ones. It just depends what you need it for and where you'd like to place it. For the area I needed for they were the perfect size.

    • You are not getting this one confused with the other they have sold?

  • I've had a few of these in my garden since 2013. Still going strong - only one of them has some slight rust on the bottom corner.

  • +4

mine is very good at growing weeds

  • Awesome price.

  • Do u reckon this could be used as a sand pit?

    • +1

Yeah just don't be surprised when your kids start sprouting in more ways than one

    • Not at all! The steel folded edges are somewhat sharp. The are fine for gardening, but I would not put kids playing in them. I reckon a decent fall or trip and you would get blood. Build a proper wood one or get a clam shell from bunnings.

  • +2

I've bought them before. You could buy two and turn them into one 120x120 + one 90x90.

    • You could if you don't want to use the tray

      • This size doesnt come with a tray.

        • My mistake , mine is the smaller size.

  • might place this on top of where the pooch is buried. should make for good growth of vegies this season.

  • +1

For Tassie where there's still no Aldi, a steel planter in the same size/price is at Shiploads. It's on page 4 of the August 25 catalog.

  • anyone grabbed one of these this week…? what sort of stock levels….are there plenty available?
