Boost Mobile’s Indy (a rebadged ZTE B816) is on sale in Coles from today for $19 – which is a half price saving!! A 4-inch Android phone for just $19 is a steal, no matter which way you cut it. Lets be honest, who doesn’t like a bargain eh?

Whilst the Boost Indy’s specs are a little on the “eh” side, it’s the price that matters here. So in case you have forgotten, here is the full list of specs for the Boost Indy (ZTE B816) device:

1GHz Dual-Core processor
ARM Cortex A7 CPU

The Boost Indy comes with Android 4.4 (Kit Kat), and there’s next to zero chance of it seeing an update past this, but for $19, you really can’t expect too much. What you do get, though, is a reasonably capable phone which would also make a great phone for kids, or as a spare to keep in your glovebox in case you trash another. For those who want a smartphone but simply can’t afford hundreds of dollars, this is a great way to take a dip into the land of Android!

The Boost Indy (ZTE B816) is available at your local Coles store only from today (Wednesday 19th October 2016) for $19 for 1 week only or until stock lasts. Also worth mentioning that the device is locked to the Telstra Network so unlocking fees will apply

They also have Tempo for $29 - http://shop.coles.com.au/online/national/telstra-prepaid-tem…

  • Can it be rooted and unlocked then we have a bargain?

  • Yes it can be unlocked as mentioned in the description (Ausdroid news) but charges apply. Not sure about the rooting.

This is ridiculous. It's exactly the same in every single spec as the Telstra Tempo. But hey the Tempo got down to $17 two Xmas ago too. Doesn't surprise me.

      • So, what makes this ridiculous?

        • Just that overcharging for a phone. The Tempo has been out for ages.

      • Got the brother Woolies model and a little faster than the pop 4 with lower res screen and sounds like more efficient ( with less power ) Lollipop instead of Marshy.

It's 900 meg of Ram so it's never going to get android 6.0 (min spec is one gig)

I've been using a phone with 1 gig of ram on 6.0.1 and it's not a very nice experience, Chrome keeps crashing due to lack of RAM plus heaps of other problems. However The minimum RAM required to run 5.0 is 512 meg so with almost twice the minimum spec, it might run quite well.

Edit - you know I think that phone might be worth posting as it's own deal. Had I not just ordered a xiaomi note 3, I probably would be lining up tomorrow.

seems like the Alcatel Pop5 has better camera & 720p screen.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/268743

        • Yes, the screen is really nice and the camera is probably better. But that phone (which is what I'm typing this on) could really do with more ram/processing power.

With the lower res screen and older OS the zte may perform better.

@mr_fjackson: My gf has the ZTE and it is pretty snappy for a budget phone. I'd take performance over pizzazz any day.

        • @mr_fjackson:

Agree. Lag on input is maddening! Love most other things about this phone.

        • +1

@syousef: I've found using the app "Greenify" helps, also if you have to have messenger and facebook try the app "light facebook".

        • @mr_fjackson:

          Thanks. Will check it out.

        • @wolfenator87:

A decent camera both back and front as well as a nice 5"screen I would call "pizzazz but usefull features for most.

That's what your gf tells you anyway…

        • @McFly: Marty you need to go back in time and delete your comment, I've just come back from the future. And your comment starts a cataclysmic event that destroys space time it's self ! Doc

        • @ozhunter68: I see where you coming from with that comment, but I can't say that personally I would recommend the pop4 5" based on my experience with it.

        • @mr_fjackson:

Sure, not my best phone experienceeither, buy what would you recommend New for $60 with decent 5" screen & band 28 4G with Aussy Warranty???

        • +2

          @mr_fjackson: This is heavy.

        • +2

@ozhunter68: You ask for too much for $60.

        • @wolfenator87:

I agree it's a big ask. That's why my reply was a question to mr_fjackson as to what they recommend comes close with those kinds of specs/features for around that price. I can think of a few models if on super cheap sale, but not many with 5" HD screens with Aussy Warranty.

      • I haven't noticed any significant slow down with the POP5 running Android 6.0 but I haven't used it extensively yet.
Maybe you could try system optimisation apps or a lite browser such as Opera?
Although admittedly the OS hogs about 600MB of ram by itself so it doesn't leave much for everything else.
What other problems are you experiencing?

        • You're most likely right, a lite browser would probably help quite a bit, I'm just addicted to chrome. I also like having some apps running in the background like messenger (or now facebooklite), pushbullet, chromecast and stuff.

"What other problems are you experiencing?" it's mostly web browsing, but also have issues with the touch sensors clicking on random stuff or not responding at all, it really struggles to show me pictures I've taken with the camera (think its all to do with lack of resources on the pop4 5"). The phone seemed ok for the first week or so.

      • If your talking about the Alcatel pop 4 5" then if you got it like most Ozbargainers for $60, it's not a bad phone with decent 5" screen/cameras/4G but not a Powerhouse thats true.
Biggest gripe for me is screen became unresponsive after installing glass protector ( never happened with 5 other phone ). Might try other eBay seller if hopefully better.

        • Yep I've also had issues with a screen protector making the screen nonresponsive. That's been the least of my problems, will do a factory reset to this (pop4 5") once I get my new phone.

        • @mr_fjackson:
Thanks for heads up. Think it's an Alcatel low budget cut cost measure with their low end models, had similar ( not as bad ) problem with a Alcatel pop 3 4.5" ( bought half price @ 35 ). Huawei also touchy, but not so bad. ZTE best touchscreens at budget end from my experience.

      • Pop 4 has Android 6.0.1 and system shows only 880 MB Ram too total. I think they round off a gross/nett GB.

        • Yep I don't know about that, mine displays the same. But every website tells me the pop has 1gig.

        • @mr_fjackson:

It's a formatting measure, like usb sticks and memory cards etc.

This comes with $10 boost credit.
I looked st phone and politely return eventhough final pricecwas coming to $8

    • Scanned at 8??

      • $19 - $10 credit - paying by GC - FF

With the recent changes on android on moving files to SD card and google default apos taking heaps space, its more effort taking phone to maintain

    • $10 boost credit is pretty much useless: http://boost.com.au/rates/ see "Handset Starter" on far right.
"$2 per MB", and "7 days expiry" so you would only get 5MB for $10, and that is if you don't make any calls!

bit off topic…any huawei budget phones with 5" screen for around $50? I remember there was a deal for the Huawei Y6 Elite for $99…

    • Not easy to get a Huawei quad core / 1 GB ram / 4G phone under $70, even prepaid 5" and 4.5" models. Also not as cheap to unlock. The Optus Prepaid Y311 isn't a bad performer often on sale for $69 ( with $30 starter Sim pack ), or less if half price sale on, but only 4.5". I nearly bought a Y6 myself ( for my Voda 4G support when porting to Voda ), decide to try a Xiaomi Note international soon instead ).

I have a Y550 brand new in box, unlocked, with brand new case and screen protector (not fitted). PM me if interested. Will be selling it on eBay, but would rather avoid their excessive fees. Got this as a spare phone but never used it.

  • I wouldn't 'dip into the land of Android' with less than 1GB RAM, it would make it a 'world of pain'. But hey it's $19? Cheap mp3 player/internet radio streamer anyone?

    • +1

or cheapest phone with the ability to block numbers. the telstra cruise for $9 can't do that.

  • Both boost and ZTE say "Camera:2MP Rear / 0.3MP Front". So, does it have front camera or not?

  • How do I find which branch has stock. I go to Coles Online choose the phone and when I click on Order, it asks me for my postcode and on entering 3000 for melbourne, then goes to another screen where the phone is no longer returned on the search results.
